I went to college early and remember the grave of Anne Burgess, whose grave is shown first here. She was the pastor’s wife, died in childbirth, and the tomb says she holds the baby girl, who also died, in her arms….and she died on Dec 24th…Christmas Eve. Yet the tomb asks “death, where is thy sting?”
Other facts about Briton Parrish Cemetery:
- at least in the 1990s, the after-church coffee was served off some of the raised grave markers, covered in a table cloth, and people chatted in the cemetery after services
- some of the colonial era graves were linked to a UK literary group called the Jacobean writers, and some conspiracy theories claim they wrote Shakespeare’s works, and attributed them to Shakespeare as an inside joke. Records apparently claim that one of these graves contains “documents, “ which the conspiracy believers think could be unseen Shakespearean plays. There have supposedly been some people trying to unearth that grave, to get to those documents, but due to its proximity to Colonial Williamsburg, were quickly stopped.
That’s a really cool place! Didn’t Robert E Lee marry into the Custiss family? I think his father-in-law was a Custiss.

just got sort of done on a Whitt family history type project first date 1613 man was married 2 kids when he got on a register very interesting he was also from the Virginia area amazing path and names come up cuts off about 1900 i know the rest from being one after that point I also saw why there has been confusion about certain things regarding our family and history.

They need to CLEAN THOSE HEADSTONES!!!! I mean, this is a part of our History for GOODNESS SAKES!!!!
When you clean a tombstone you do more harm than good. You can destroy the stone underneath the engraving. Please research the harm cleaning the stones can do.
