It is so fun to watch this video much later than it was made. You had great vision and foresight to imagine just how you wanted it to be. And then the dream became a plan and a reality. This is one of the most enjoyable parts of watching other gardeners at work. Thanks for all the videos. Very cheery and inspiring.
I've been a subscriber for a while and decided I wanted to see your early videos. Judging from this one, you're a natural! I always enjoy hearing about your activities on the allotment, your DIYs, and your tips about how to grow things.
I enjoyed your first video Katie! All being well, I will be getting my own plot next week so I will try to do what I can this year. Getting hints and tips from all sorts of people who are already involved such as yourself, is definitely a great help for me! Wishing you a productive season and many thanks!
He is truly the best Dad and I would be lost without him! I am lucky to have his help with all the DIY aspects as I would never be able to do them on my own and its great that we help each other out :) Thank you
Katie, absolutely love your work, the kettle is awesome too! After discovering the mighty world of gardening myself last year I have now taken on the massive project of converting a 150ft x 80ft area (two thirds grass and a third veg and chickens) with 8 raised beds and an 8m x 4m fruit cage.
I can't get enough of gardening, if only we didn't have to work! I do however think gardening is getting more 'trendy', although some people don't realise how much hard work it is :)
cheaper than a gym membership, fresh air not air con, good spray free fruit & veg what more can you ask. hope you get the chance too look at my allotment video`s
Well done katie for working so hard on your plot in such a short space of time. I like your layout and future plans and look forward to watching your progress over the season.
Thank you so much Andrew, its hard work but fun none the less. I can't stop thinking of new ideas, the problem is my plots too small so I'm trying to use every available space :)
I have a huge back garden so I'm digging some up to do my own veg patch. I've never done anything like this before so I have been watching lots of vids on RUclips for tips. I love this video and I'm looking forward to watching the rest! Xx
You have made a great start. Dad has taught you well. For February you have a lot . growing already. A nice video. I look forward to seeing your progress.
Your soil looks SO wonderful! Fertile and dark. and when I watched the video of you making your pond, I could hardly believe the depth of the nice soil. Here, to dig a hole that deep, there would be MANY rocks to remove!
Very informative and a nice plot of land. The dirt I have here has no soil in it, no organic matter on the flat land as it was cut away from the hillside, but I am able to gather soil and organic matter from the forest and try some lasagna gardening. Mulch is key! But you may not have as much problem with keeping moisture in the soil over there as you do having too much of it. It's nice you are able to plant in February. I'm still a month out from my last frost date, but the peas are in, with parsnips and many other root and leaf veg. Hoop houses are great =) I hope your year goes amazingly.
Great opening vid, Katie. I will watch with interest to see you over the season you have all the heart to make a great job of you allotment. I watch a number of channels and I would say female gardeners are nothing new, in fact my wife equals my work load every day. One tip, (if I may) we both use disposable clear plastic gloves they save on broken nails, heavy scrubbing after work... keep you hands like your flowers, perfect. Look forward to the next vid, hope the weather keeps fine for you , all the best, Len.
Thank you Len, I am really enjoying working on my allotment so far and this is my first year so I'm very excited. Thanks for the advice aswell, although I quite like getting my hands dirty I would love some proper gardening gloves but can't find any to fit my long fingers and they are just uncomfortable otherwise. The weather has been glorious but I'm sure it won't last very long :)
What a great video... I look forward to seeing how you go on in 2014. I love your vintage-inspired shed.. its lovely! You are very organised and I cant wait to see your plot in full bloom with all your flowers :) Good Luck!
Thank you :) I'm very excited for the year ahead and currently sowing seeds and planting my early potatoes, its all go at the moment! I'm thinking of new ideas aswell so it should be fun :)
Lovely introduction Katie, it was like watching spring arrive in 25 minutes. I love my Kelly Kettle (despite it having no whistle like the Ghillie) the only way to enjoy your tea. Can't wait for the next episode. Big John
Thank you so much! I couldn't live without my kettle now, they are just amazing aren't they? And I agree, cups of tea taste so much better from them ;)
Katie, I subbed and look forward to your journey of gardening. It is very nice that your Father is there to help & support you. You have a very large allotment. I like how organized you have it.
I am ever so grateful to my Dad and I pay him generously with tea and biscuits! It's nice that I get to learn everything from him and that we can help each other :) I wouldn't say its large but its the perfect size for me right now, and I must admit I'm a bit of a neat freak!
I'm so delighted to see your allotment gardening video channel, and what a well done one it is! Not that I don't appreciated all of the guys' allotment vids out there, but I think it's inspiring for young girls to see that allotments are not just primarily a man's world, and that they can be held and maintained by women just as easily as they can be by men. I often think I might like to do videos as well, but unfortunately I don't have the video equipment to do so, nor am I very technologically minded (just the thought of having to do video editing is terrifying! LOL). In the meantime, I'm content to be here on the sidelines, cheering you on. From one Katie to another, I'm already looking forward to your next episode. :)
I'm so happy I found this channel!! We just got an allotment and I am a complete beginner when it comes to gardening. I'm sure your videos will be very helpful.
hi Katie your video was great your shed is something to aspire to, I have just acquired my plot in march including a shed which I have great plans for in particular a lick of paint I may go lavender as your shed is truly lovely, also a big shout out to your dad for helping you how wonderful to be able to work on a project together x
I came across your video, while I was watching someone else's, I'm new too the allotment game, I tool on my plot in October so I still have alot too do, I'm taking my time and not rushing it, digging over the plot by hand and getting as much as the weed out as possible, I have had a fee people come up and say stop counting those weeds, don't know if I'm being too though or too slow digging, I have never grown anything before so I have everything to learn, I will keep and eye out for more of your videos, you probably already have bit there are 4 main people I watch aprons allotment, rick van man, Andy and Sean on the hort channel, you should check them out, but you sound like you have all the advise you will ever need in your dad, keep up the good work
You got your plot the same month I got mine last year. I got a half plot after a 4 year wait. I didn't hand dug as much as I could and sowed late crops as I cleared the couch grass etc. Your way ahead of me, my shed blew apart in the autumn storm then blown off its footings in the second storm :(. I have spent more time rebuilding the shed than anything else so far. I'm not too fussed about how it looks at the moment, I'll get there, but as you say, its a little piece of heaven.
Oh dear your poor shed! My plot is rather tiny so it's not been too bad when it comes to digging and weeding although I would love a bigger one! Keep going though, little by little and you will get there in the end :)
Its payback with the shed, it was on the vacant plot next to me, so I asked and took it. The shed is cursed :(. Its a little to early to sow direct on the plot for a of stuff , so I have plants at home that I grow early and keep in the greenhouse. I'll take the stuff to the plot end of May and dig once, then plant out. :D.
To help ya with ya garlic Katie the yellowing is totally fine, it just a visible sign theyre maturing & when it gets half way down ya can gently dig a bulb up to check on the size & how mature they are. I grow garlic & find thats the best way to check. Then theyre best hung with twine in a dry shed & great to cook with when the skin turns to a light parchment like texture. I always keep some back for the next season & they do store untill then just hung in which they begin to sprout which ya can whack in again then. I just planted some cloves from my last seasons crop last week & theyre shooting up already :) good luck :)
It's perfectly fine to use a rotavator aswell Katie, altho over use is bad as it makes the soil to fine & can cause it to be compacted & hard with heavy rain where you may get standing water, but it's best to use at the end & beginning of the season to airate the soil & less backbreaking than turning the soil manually....allot of oldskool gardeners keep manure under plastic to breakdown but ive found fresh manure before rotavating works it in & composts well & gives the soil nutrients without lying on the surface. :)
Hi Katie, just found your RUclips videos! Thought I would start right at the beginning of your plot. What an awesome and neat space! And with so much plans already, I'm looking forward to your other videos. XxDebbie... a Dutch girl with a squarefoot garden at home here in The Netherlands :D
Great to see a new face in the garden! When it seem unbearable, remember, it will get easier. So don't give up! By the way really awesome first video. Will be waiting to see more!
Thank you so much :) Don't worry, there is no way I will ever give up, I am loving every second of it! Half way through filming the next video so it should be ready by the end of March.
I am thinking of joining you in this youtube venture myself. I know its a lot of work though, and I am glad you're doing it. Spring is such a great time! Now all I have to do is wait for the snow to melt and the ground to be workable. I am jealous of your garden right now. ;)
That would be great! Its so much fun but I agree that it takes a lot of time, but it should get quicker and easier the more you do it I guess :) Spring is always exciting but ths is my first full year so its all steam ahead. Fingers cross the snow melts soon for you!
Hi Katie, always good to see a new face, and a girl who knows what shes talking about too! I'm going to go off and find your blog and facebook. Your Dad sounds like mine - where would we be without them eh? Best wishes, great tour Kay
Thank you so much Kay. I would be completely lost without my Dad and his amazing Dad like super powers! It's great learning things from him about gardening and DIY :)
Loverly allotment hun, we are waiting for the keys to our new allotment so we are at planning stage still and I look forward to catching up on all of your vids,
Thank you Regency Lass (There doesnt seem to be a reply button under your comment!), I just wanted to say what nice things to hear on this rainy morning, I really appreciate it :) I completely agree with you, allotments are a lot of hard work but nothing a bit of girl power can't cope with, look at the land girls for instance! I'm trying hard not to be too girly because I think it will scare the men off, I think thats why I don't show the inside of my shed too much (theres bunting inside!) On the technological front, you don't neccessarily need professional camera equipment or edting programmes, I know a few people who use their mobiles and still do a great job. Thank you again for your beautiful comment :)
Why not get a gravel tray, double size seed tray, or even one of those large flat cardboard boxes, lined with a old compost bag to stop the compost going all over your shelf. The standard seed tray, or module tray will fit easily in the centre. That's what I do ... saves any mess. I like your videos, so all the best for the future on your lottie.
Brilliant video Kate :) welcome to allotment youtubing :) I also have a bike and trailer which gets noticed quite a lot so it is nice to see I'm not the only person who has one haha :) keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing more videos :)
Thank you Robert! Haha, I do get some funny looks when I'm cycling to the allotment with the trailer on, it's like people have never seen one before?! They are very handy though I must say :)
Well I live about a 10 minute walk away so it takes me about 2 minutes to cycle! :D yes I am on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, the links are in the video descriptions
ok cheers :) im following you on instagram :) my cycle trailer is basically an old wheelchair, we have cut the foot rests off and attatched a towing hitch sort of thing, and made a box to sit inside, it takes a lot of weight haha
Oh I love your YT name "Lavender and Leeks" I might need to call myself "Ginger and Geraniums". I love your bike too with it's trailer that is so me. I would love one then I could use my car less. Oh and your cabinet. I always did like those. You are inspirational. Thank you.
Thank you, it's my blog name but I wanted something flowery and veg related to stick with my allotment :) I wouldn't be without my little bicycle trailer, I only live a 2 minute bike ride away so it's a little silly taking the car! I do love my cabinet, it brightens my shed up :)
Very good video and good luck through the season. As you have a small plot you would find it easier not to direct sow. The peas could have been sown into the module you sowed the cosmos in, 5 to a cell and then planted out 6" apart. The only veg I direct sow is carrots and parsnip.
Thank you for the advice :) The only problem I have is lack of space, all the windowsills in the house are full of seed trays already due to having no cold frame or green house :S All my broad beans and peas are growing great outside though and they have all come up :)
Thank you, I've posted more but it's hard to get out and do some filming when the weather is so rubbish. I'm going to do some filming tonight however because the sun has decided to show his face :)
Thats correct, you certainly tools when gardening and if you dont have any then yes, you need new ones and these ones were courtesy of Drapers :) I'm lucky to have my Dad to help with all the DIY things otherwise it would just be little old me and I'm hopeless at DIY, thats why I do all the digging and gardening myself. Don't worry, you will see more of my Dad in the next episode!
I just came across your channel. & a Merry Christmas and a Happy & Safe New Year to you and all your family & friends. I have a few video's to catch up on, I am hoping that your journey has been fun so far.. I remember learning a lot about gardening from my dad. However I moved to another country since those days for the last 10yrs..It is so nice to see how other people do stuff. thank you sharing ... Are there allotments all over the UK.??
Thank you joining our allotment adventures, I hope you like the videos. It's been great fun and so nice to garden alongside my Dad. There is usually an allotment site in every village in the Uk, they are in huge demand now
Katie, I was thinking of getting a shed on my own allotment. I'm a beginner, and your shed looks so lovely and homely in side and outside. what kinds of things do you store in your shed? Great video as well.
lovely garden and shed. i noticed that the only plot you're protecting from the deer is the potato plot... which is the only one i'm not protecting since the leaves are poisonous to deer, groundhogs, rabbits, etc. just a thought :)
+dulahdaglace When I filmed this video I had no protection on anything, you must be looking at the wrong plot maybe? :) I've since put a fence around my entire plot to stop those pesky deer!
I really enjoyed your vid. You are very watchable unlike many that irritate me and I have to turn off :) I love all your little tips on how you do things. Thank you for sharing.
well done katie you are doing realy well you are well organised in where you are planting and timeing you have sectioned off areas which is good looks like you are in control i worked with dobbies garden centre for 12 years and just changed jobs as tesco own dobbies now which is not good with there operating of a company too much much rules lol but anyway i have a allotment which i love and cherrish as you cant beat home grown veggies and fruit i am hpeing to try a few new things this year but katie keep it going and might i say you are very nice looking also lol
Loved the video Katie....what editing software do you use? Very nicely presented. Found you by accident while watching Sean's Allotment,so now subscribed to you both. Love you retro style along with the 60's retro cabinet in your shed....(car boot find?)
Hello Maina and thank you :) I use a program called Magix movie edit pro, it's a little professional but I find it's great and I'm just getting the hang of it (and learning new things too) hope this helps?
Hi. From which county you are, if you have perdect wheather at February? Next year, my first gardening year. I'am from Yorkshire. What kind wheather i can expectes in this county? Sorry, for my awful language V
Hi Stephen, looks like the rain has stopped for a while now which means we can finally all get started on digging and planting seeds. Its all good fun though :)
stephen bond Hi Stephen, theres too many things that I will be growing this year to mention them all here so head over to my blog where don't ever stop talking about my lottie :)
It is so fun to watch this video much later than it was made. You had great vision and foresight to imagine just how you wanted it to be. And then the dream became a plan and a reality. This is one of the most enjoyable parts of watching other gardeners at work. Thanks for all the videos. Very cheery and inspiring.
Gosh this seems so long ago now! Thank you so much and I'm so glad you enjoy them

Thank you so much David, I do love my Ghillie Kettle! Sounds like a challenge but a great one at that, good luck and have fun with your new venture :)
lovely to see a young lady taking an interest in gardening wish more young people were like you
I can't get enough of gardening, if only we didn't have to work! I do however think gardening is getting more 'trendy', although some people don't realise how much hard work it is :)
cheaper than a gym membership, fresh air not air con, good spray free fruit & veg what more can you ask. hope you get the chance too look at my allotment video`s
Very true! There is not a lot of cons when it comes to gardening except from the weeds :) I will definately check them out :)
Well done katie for working so hard on your plot in such a short space of time. I like your layout and future plans and look forward to watching your progress over the season.
Thank you so much Andrew, its hard work but fun none the less. I can't stop thinking of new ideas, the problem is my plots too small so I'm trying to use every available space :)

beautiful plot! I am definitely looking forward to what you will be putting up on the web. Great quality as well!
Great video, can't wait to see more.
Thank you Kate :)

Really nice videos, and very encouraging for folks like me starting with an allotment
Well done Katie, your a natural !
Haha, I'm not sure about that but hopefully I will get more relaxed as the videos go on, but thank you so much :)
Wow, you did really good for your first video? It's kinda fun visiting you in the beginning. Great job again and I do love a neat garden. Janice
Great to see a new face in the garden! When it seem unbearable, remember, it will get easier. So don't give up! By the way really awesome first video. Will be waiting to see more!

Great job young lady!
Nice allotment, had to subscribe to see your future progress. Best of luck.

Loverly allotment hun, we are waiting for the keys to our new allotment so we are at planning stage still and I look forward to catching up on all of your vids,
Great little introduction. Thanks.
That was wicked, just got an allotment my self last week! Hope all goes well
Thank you! Exciting times ahead for you, planning it all out is half the fun, good luck with it all :)
Great video, really good filming and editing.

Hello nick the garlic out with a knife it happens because you maybe watering mid day or it rains and they go brown

Thank you and I was thinking just thank, I'm going to upcycle an old school desk top or use one of those plastic potting trays :)
They are very handy though I must say :)
haha, i only lve about 3/4 of a mile away from my lottie, and i really would be lost without my trailer haha, are you on facebook by any chance? x
Loved the video...thanks so much for sharing :-)
What a lovely video.
Loved the video! Your only going to post one a month? I'll be missing your updates until then, looking forward to them!!
Thank you, I've posted more but it's hard to get out and do some filming when the weather is so rubbish. I'm going to do some filming tonight however because the sun has decided to show his face :)
All new tools ! Guess dad did that too :)
Look forward to the seasons produce and more of dad lol
Thats correct, you certainly tools when gardening and if you dont have any then yes, you need new ones and these ones were courtesy of Drapers :) I'm lucky to have my Dad to help with all the DIY things otherwise it would just be little old me and I'm hopeless at DIY, thats why I do all the digging and gardening myself. Don't worry, you will see more of my Dad in the next episode!
Just found your channel and subscribed. Love that your shed includes tea supplies. I am curious about the kettle and how it works.
Great video as well.
your allotment has changed so much since this video :o
lovely garden and shed. i noticed that the only plot you're protecting from the deer is the potato plot... which is the only one i'm not protecting since the leaves are poisonous to deer, groundhogs, rabbits, etc. just a thought :)
+dulahdaglace When I filmed this video I had no protection on anything, you must be looking at the wrong plot maybe? :) I've since put a fence around my entire plot to stop those pesky deer!
Nice first video - keep up the good work.
can you eat those flowers?
Very nice video thanks for making it I recently started a very huge allotment it looks more like a jungle :D

Opps forgot to say that I work in the vintage trade which is how I came across the cabinet, but you can find similar ones on eBay too.
