Actually the cat bell goes way, way back. It goes all the way back to Ancient Egypt. The Pharaoh Meowpatra declared that all cats must be worshipped as an avatar of the Goddess Bastet. They had to he showered with gifts of affection and food whenever they were present. However, cats are sneaky and therefore people got punished for not worshipping a hidden cat. The cat bell was created so the followers of Bastet could always tell when the Divine Feline was around. This saved them much punishment from the Pharaoh's Cat Guard.
i thought it was just because they were quiet and swift, so they put a bell on them so they could know where the cat really is
For anyone curious, cars have bells because of how silent they are, it prevents you from accidentally stepping on them or crushing them when closing doors, they're especially necessary for tiny kittens
its actually to warn the prey. The owners dont want them killing wildlife

my nephew is a catsona and hes 100% a lazy house cat and i love him :)
What I've learned is some cats were bread as "micers" (cats that hunt mice to protect crops and other land) and that the population of squirrels were decreasing when mice started not coming out enough so they hunted other things then they did the bells to scare mice and squirrels as well as chipmunks

cats originally started to have bells on their collars from my understanding as a way to warn birds before they got eaten because it was such a problem

i thin the collars have bells because when you used to get a new cat some put butter on their paws when they were outside because it got them used to their surroundings but people may have found that difficult, so they used bells to find their cats, and also style, duh XD

i think the bell on cat collars is so they have harder time sneaking up on birds. they have made allot of common birds near extinct in the late 80s early 90s
People put bells on their cat for a variety of reasons. Some so that they dont accidently step on the feline as it prowls through the house. One so they can see if their cat is still around as they can vanish in thin air when they wish and another to warn prey animals of their presence and give them a fighting chance as cats are incredible hunters and can do some damage to native pops if allowed outdoors (though if the damage the Audabon Society claimed they do was true there wouldnt have been a single song bird on the planet as of like 14 years ago). Now after writing this I realized you may be asking if it means anything to the furry folks and not the animal cat
