I have similar Japanese thread snips. It appears that the issue may be that you are using them left handed and they are designed for right handed use. Left hand thumb would push the blades apart instead of together. Good review. Fiskars make great products. Cutting wheels, scissors, even their wood splitting axes are well made.
I've gone through 3 pair of these through warranty. First ones the spring broke. Second, the blades slipped past the limit and it dulled the blades because of it. Third, the blades had separation and wouldn't cut anything. I just use a pair of fiskars scissors now. They're small and stay razor sharp.
