Thanks for your reply Frank. Got my FC delived yesterday and was up 'til 4am playing with my new quadcopter!! Wow, this KK2 board is so awesome and very easy to program. Love the glow of led light behind the lcd screen. I went ahead and unplugged the red wire in my UBEC esc before i plugged them in M2 M3 M4 ports to be safe and it works well. Your recommended PI settings all worked beautiful and made my first quad fly pretty smooth! I'm going to play with the Auto Level feature tonight and try
Thanks Mike, hope this one flys half as good as Paul's then I'll be happy. Been wanting to get into quads ever since he got his. Should be a lot of fun!!
Thanks, Paul was actually the one shooting video for the SCT from his DJI flamewheel 450 quad. He does not have it set up for FPV, it just has a GoPro Hero camera mounted on it. You can find videos on Pauls quad on DiehardrcAddicts RUclips channel page.
Thanks for the suggestion. I was thinking the same thing as who knows what will happen on the maiden flight. So far like what I see from this quad. The quality seem very good.
I just ordered the same board and will be picking it up from the post office tomorrow. Will put in on an X525 frame I already have. Cant wait to see your maiden and will post mine after I get everything setup.
Yes, very happy with the motors so far. They provide lots of power. Doesn't take much throttle to hover at all. If you really want too you should be able to go down in motor size with out any problems.
Thanks startazz! In part 1 only the build of the quad was covered. In part 2 I will try my best to show how to set up the kk2 board and get the Quad to fly correctly. Wish me luck cause like you I'm just getting into quads and anything could happen.
Thanks for pointing that out. I found per the instructions that the new KK2 board only needs to have the wires cut if you are using multiple esc with switching mode bec. If they have the usual linear bec you do not need to cut the wires. It also states M1 must have a an esc pluged into it as this one feeds power to the control board. M2-M8 are all connected together and all esc on these will power everything else including the receiver and any servos, etc that may be pluged in.
The ESCs used to build this quad have BECs (battery eliminator circuits) built into them. The power from the main flight pack battery runs through the ESCs and the BECs regulate the voltage down to the proper volts for the receiver and KK2 board. You do not need a separate battery for the receiver or KK2 board.
Yes, you will have to solder the wires to the solder board but you may also need to shorten the wires between the ESCs and motors which means you may have to resolder the conectors. There is no other soldering than that. the rest of the quad just bolts together.
The PCB board has two solder points for the battery connection wires on the bottom of the board. The other four sets of solder points for the ESCs are on the top of the PCB board. You just can't see them in the picture on HobbyKings website.
I used my Airtronix 8ch receiver with my RDS8000 8ch transmitter. You can use any radio tx and rx with at least 4 channels but would recommend 6 channels or more if you want to use the aux channel to switch modes.
Nice build Frank! I'm not sure about the new KK board you are using but on earlier models you need to snip the positive and negative leads coming from 3 of the 4 ESCs in order to avoid damaging the board - only need power from one ESC to power the board and receiver. Might be good to check this before you power up.
I had one esc die after about 10-15 flights. Haven't had any other issues since replacing that one. If I were to do it all over again I would probably go with the Turnigy Plush 30Amp esc as I have never had them fail.
Nice video. I bought a 450 quad from a friend who built it but couldn't get it to fly. I went through an ESC video on all 4 ESC's and then set it up according to your videos. Took it out and it flew pretty well, even with a bit of wind. Mine is on an older aluminum frame, I have the SK450 arriving tomorrow from Amazon and will move over to it. It think it will be more visible in the air and more durable as well.
I think worthwhile mentioning: if you use the Lower PCB frame to solder ESC's directly, you're also gonna need a connector to your battery like this one: PRODUCT ID: 601A-12-10cm
You want to run the #5 wire lead from the KK2 receiver input side of the board to the receiver Aux out put channel of your choice, then set up the auto level to Aux in the KK2 setup menu. This is covered in the SK450 Quadcopter part2 video.
They are the same size but have a few differences. The Q450 is more of a direct copy of the DJI Flame Wheel 450 quadcopter. The SK 450 frame isn't as tall between the top and bottom and has bolt on motor mounts and landing legs.
It comes with all the screws you need to assemble the quadcopter. The only other ones you need are the ones that come with the motors so you can screw them onto the motor mounts. You will also need some M3 size plastic standoffs to mount your control board to the quad. Please check the links in the video information bar below the video.
Yes, should be no problem using 10x4sf props with these 950kv motors. If you use different motors with higher kv rating then you will need to change to smaller props.
The motors fit the bolt pattern but the center hole that the shaft sits over needs to be a little bigger so the c-clip on end of the shaft won't rub when the motors turn. you can drill them out bigger or use a small hobby file. It doen't need much.
Frank was correct. Where the confusion occurs is the way you perceive male or female connections with this connector. He is referencing the pins used to make contact with its counterpart NOT the Black Plastic that holds the 3 pins. These cables are used to connect the MALE pins on the receiver to the MALE pins on the KK 2 board thus they need to contain FEMALE pins. Alot of people refer to these cables as MALE because they often fit into a Sleeve which they refer to as FEMALE.
When your zip ties are in the middle of the esc like yours, when you crash hard or try to start it up for the first time it can destroy them by splitting them right in half or burning out from the pressure. So put the zip tie where the wires that branch off from the esc are on each side. :)
I haven't set up a gimbal on my SK-450 so don't really have any advice on setup. You could do a search on the rc forums and I'm sure you would find what you need.
Never tested it with a watt meter but the motors used are max rated at 23amps so 25amp esc are ok if you are not on the throttle all the time. 30amp esc would be safer.
I'm not sure what the problem is as I have not experienced it with the stock prop adaptors that come with the motor. You might just need to tighten them a little more to insure they hold. I usually slip a hex wrench through the hole in the cone shaped nut and cinch it down.
Yes the KK2 control board has an auto leveling feature but it needs to be set up correctly. We'll be going over setting up and dialing in the quad in the Part 2 video.
The SK450 kit is the quad frame only. You will also need to buy all the electronics. The solder board is sold seperately. Check the links in the video information bar below the video. Threadlock is not a bad idea but use the removable type if you do.
I'm not sure what it's called maybe, control board mounting plate. If it's available on HobbyKing's website it would be listed in the "Multirotor & Parts" menu then click "Frame Parts" Then "Hobbyking SK450 Parts"
Hi Frank, Great video they are the best I have seen. They really helped me to setup and fly my first quad, I really like my quad and the way it handles. Now to set up the auto leveling, how do I setup a switch on the transmitter for turning on or off the auto leveling
Thanks for your video. I'm also in the process of building my first quad and have the same motors as you. I'm having problems with the screw cap spinning off and the propellers flying off the shaft. Is there any trick to properly attaching those things that I am missing?
Very impressed with your video, went to your site and could not find a listing of needed parts for the SK450. Would like to build one. Any suggestions?
In the video I used 2200mAh 40c 3s1p LiPo batteries. For longer run times you can use bigger batteries but would keep them 4000mAh or less. I was getting 5 to 7 minutes with my setup.
It was under $200 for all the parts shown on the table in the video not counting any discounts you would get after logging in to your HobbyKing account. Please check out the video information bar below the video for links to everything.

I'm in the process of building a similar quad, are you happy with your motor selection? I will be attaching a gopro to mine but that should be it. I'm trying to decide if I can go with a smaller motor to increase the run time. Thanks.
Great videos Frank! Your videos help convince me to purchase my first quad. I got DJI f450 frame from LHS since HK cannot keep sk450's in stock. I've got all the soldering done so just waiting on kk2 board to arrive. I am using 4 Hobbywing SkyWalker-40A UBEC ESC's for my quad, do I need to snip red and black wire going into kk2 motor inputs? Thanks for you help!
Hello Frank! First of all thank you for amazing video. Can you give a little info about maximum weight which can be added to your quad with this configuration! Thank in advance!
Michał Pełka at about 60% throttle this setup pulls about 4.75lbs (2150g) The quad with 4000mAh 3 cell weighs about 3lbs (1360g) you should be able to safely carry another 1.75lbs (790g) and still get good flight times.
Hi, I would like to build a similar quadcopter, but I prefer a connecetion board rather than a soldering board, so could you recommand one for me, thanks in advance!
gran bel progetto volevo chiedere nell'ultimo link non capisco quali pezzi acquistare? poi un altra cosa se volessi comandarlo con smartphone e aggiungere gps e altimetro è possibile??
Frank, The battery for the SK450 is a 1500-2200mAh 3s 11.1v. On the battery ordering page it shows discharge rates for a 2200mAh. I am new and don't understand which battery I should order and what it all means. Can you help?
What is that top plate called? I have a F450 but it only has the lower & upper plates between the booms but I would really like to have that top plate that you have mounted your KK2 board on! Whats that called and where can I get one?
Your video shows a pack of " female to female " connectors. The SKU # is 258000011 which shows up as male connectors if I'm reading the numbers correctly. Which one's do I need? I'm going to use the Turnigy 9x9 trans.
I used all the parts similar to the ones mentioned in the video except the motors. The motors i used are emax xa 2212 rated at 1400 kv. The following are the parts i used for making SK450 Quad: 1. Simon series 25A ESC 2. 12 x 4.5E Nylon Multi Rotor Props 3. Hobbyking KK 2.1 Multi Rotor Control Board 4.CellCor 2200mAh 3S 25 C LiPo Pack 5. Turnigy 5x5Ch Tx/Rx(Mode 2) and finally Emax XA2212 1400 kV motors. I just wanted to ask if the parts used are good enough or do i need to find any other alternative. Any help would be highly appreciated as i am new in this. Thank You!!
Roshan Singh 1400kv is too high for 12x4.5 props. For that size you would need motors rated around 700kv or less. If you are going to use the 1400kv motors you will need props no bigger then 7x3.8
DiehardRCaddicts What size props can I use along with 2210N 1000Kv Brushless Motors? Also, are these motors a good alternative to Turnigy 2836/9 Brushless motors which I wanted to use but could not due to my budget. If not, can you suggest some other motor in the same range? Thank You!
Roshan Singh The recommended prop on HobbyKing site is 9x5 on 3 cells but you should also be able to run the 10x3.8 props I used in this SK450 build video series. Just be sure to check the motors after a short flight to make sure they are not getting hot.
how much is your cost?i plan to build super cheap 450 quad using the cheapest hardware i can find on Hobby King..and i dont have any RC transmiter/receiver yet
I would not use anythimng smaller than a 2200mAh 3s battery. You will also want to use high C rated batteries. I use the Turnigy Nano-Tech 2200mAh 3s1p 45~90C batteries or Rhino 2250mAh 3s1p 40C batteries. The higher the C rating is, the more amps you can safely draw from the battery. This is important since only one battery is running all four motors.
can someone please gie me some guidence. i have an ideafly ifly 4, and just switched out the frame for an sk 450, but i want to move over to a kk2.0. my question is without the pcb frame i need a pdb aswell. is there anything else i need too? how does the kk join up to a pdb, is there any special connections i must buy?
one of my arms have snapped on the sk450 having trouble in finding them online can anyone direct me to finding them or can you use the flame wheel thats if its the same, thanks in advance.
Hi Frank after seeing your video my 8 yr old son is soo inspired that he wants me to order the SK450 parts so he can assemble them...He wants to make the exact one you have shown in this video. Hobby King sells a new version or ready to go SK450 but my son wants to assemble and program it so he wants the oen in this video. The new one from Hobby King is costing me $175 whereas if I put together all the parts for the one i this video its is costing me $280...I hope I am not ordering something wrong by mistake? Also if i order the parts then how will I assemble it where do I got the assembly instructions?? Kindly help please. thx a lot... Raj
Shorya Bhasin This is a very simple quad to build and comes with one page instructions including exploded view drawing. You can also check the rc forums for the SK450. Also check the SK450 files tab on HobbyKing website.
hi my name is peter, i wish to get this quad but in Africa, we dnt hv a market where u can buy a quadrocopter . can anyone help me with de link on how to get it
Sir. I clicked on this video hopping to learn how to build this woodcutter. Instead of showing how to build it, you showed the finished product and not the process. I am not even sure who actually put it together. Can we see the process rather than just the result?
Links to all the parts for this SK450 Quadcopter are in the video information bar below the video. Please click them to order the parts on HobbyKings website .
dont worry about my previous comment, i no longer have an sk450 frame after it snapped in mid air on my first flight. i wouldnt reccommend this frame to anyone trying to build a quality quad, as it is a weak piece of crap.

Yes on the esc connections and yes your Turnigy 9X will work fine.
I think worthwhile mentioning: if you use the Lower PCB frame to solder ESC's directly, you're also gonna need a connector to your battery like this one:

Motor would probably take it but may be pushing the 25A ESCs. Each motor is pulling about 22A at full throttle with APC 10 x 3.8 SF props.
Yes, should be no problem using 10x4sf props with these 950kv motors. If you use different motors with higher kv rating then you will need to change to smaller props.

I think that should be fine as this esc can handle bursts to 50a just watt meter it to see what it draws.
No you don't have to cut any of the esc leads. This is covered in the part 2 video.
Why the redundant +5 and ground cables between Rx and KK2? Just need one, then run just signal wires from other channels...

Hello Frank!
First of all thank you for amazing video.

thanks
Frank, The battery for the SK450 is a 1500-2200mAh 3s 11.1v. On the battery ordering page it shows discharge rates for a 2200mAh. I am new and don't understand which battery I should order and what it all means. Can you help?

Hi, do you know how to calibrate multistar ESC? Standard method doesn’t work.
I used all the parts similar to the ones mentioned in the video except the motors. The motors i used are emax xa 2212 rated at 1400 kv. The following are the parts i used for making SK450 Quad:
1. Simon series 25A ESC
2. 12 x 4.5E Nylon Multi Rotor Props
3. Hobbyking KK 2.1 Multi Rotor Control Board
4.CellCor 2200mAh 3S 25 C LiPo Pack
5. Turnigy 5x5Ch Tx/Rx(Mode 2)
and finally Emax XA2212 1400 kV motors.
DiehardRCaddicts
What size props can I use along with 2210N 1000Kv Brushless Motors? Also, are these motors a good alternative to Turnigy 2836/9 Brushless motors which I wanted to use but could not due to my budget. If not, can you suggest some other motor in the same range? Thank You!
Roshan Singh The recommended prop on HobbyKing site is 9x5 on 3 cells but you should also be able to run the 10x3.8 props I used in this SK450 build video series. Just be sure to check the motors after a short flight to make sure they are not getting hot.
Thank you so much for your help!
How much would it cost to build the cuadcopter from start to finish... THANKS!!!!
I have one more question while my batteries are coming form China. What power's the flight pack? Is there another bat needed for the receiver?
Where did you get the female to female wire connectors?
how much is your cost?i plan to build super cheap 450 quad using the cheapest hardware i can find on Hobby King..and i dont have any RC transmiter/receiver yet
and nice build Frank too.
You should have heaps of power with those motors, the're huge!
Nice video I have the exact same quad but I have the naza m lite and not the kk2 and is just brilliant :)
According to this
All + of ESCs have to be connected together and same with -
Right?
I have 9xR will it work good? i am brand new to RC :D xD
This one should have no problems carrying a go pro.
Also help me with camera gimbal setup?
can someone please gie me some guidence. i have an ideafly ifly 4, and just switched out the frame for an sk 450, but i want to move over to a kk2.0. my question is without the pcb frame i need a pdb aswell. is there anything else i need too? how does the kk join up to a pdb, is there any special connections i must buy?
Under $200 without radio or battery. Please check the product links in the video information bar below the video.
hello,
can i put a gopro or another sportcam on it?
thx
Yes, this quad would have no problem lifting a GoProp or other sportcam.
hey whats the difference between this and the Q450?
SKU# 258000011 is the correct part number. They fit male to male conections but have female connecters on the wire leads.
one of my arms have snapped on the sk450 having trouble in finding them online can anyone direct me to finding them or can you use the flame wheel thats if its the same, thanks in advance.
+Nuffflove Hobbyking still sells spare parts for this quad on their website. Look under multirotor spare parts to find them.
+RCFF-DiehardRC Nice one Bro i now got them on order its says in stock thanks
Hi Frank. How much did this cost in total?
What reciever did you use
The flight controller does hv auto leveling?
would it be okay to use 10x6 props?
Also check the SK450 files tab on HobbyKing website.
what screws does it come with
HELP!!!! HELP!!!
What is the wire next to the KK Board?
could this lift a go pro
? :)
I would have told you to take off in auto level, and that your first flight should just be a hover, but I guess I'm about a year late :)
hi my name is peter, i wish to get this quad but in Africa, we dnt hv a market where u can buy a quadrocopter . can anyone help me with de link on how to get it
and the link of the props
Because the 10 x 3.8 props are sold out
Correction..I meant to say quadcopter. Not woodcutter. My typo.
Damn! I ordered male to male connector pack >_< now what?
Hahaha I have been blocked by Hobby King Live youtube channel because I posted comments asking Hobby King to start selling parts for their planes.
LOL
thanx ,, i read a lott on those Turnigy TY-P1 25Amp HEXFET® they are shit ,, LOL ,, i ordered 4X the 30 amp plush turnigy , now
this frame is heavy its better building a lite ply wood frame you get a longer flight duration
dont worry about my previous comment, i no longer have an sk450 frame after it snapped in mid air on my first flight. i wouldnt reccommend this frame to anyone trying to build a quality quad, as it is a weak piece of crap.
