It’s really something to see all these new Arch installation vids that are 10 min long 😆 I think it was an excellent decision to include this official installer which will help bring more people to Arch, not to mention make it a lot more efficient for existing users to install on multiple machines. Of course there was already the Anarchy installer which is what I used to easily install Arch, but this seems better to me. I like that it gives you the option of landing at a shell prompt or at a DE, and a good selection of DEs at that. To those who are using this to install Arch, I wish you a happy journey 🙂

I am not worried by the fact that installing arch is easier now but the fact that the iso size is getting bigger. people who think that they get some elite status by installing arch are absolute nuts because anyone with access to the wiki can just follow the commands without understanding anything. there should be only one legitimate reason to install arch, that is installing the system from the ground up without any extra software creeping in that u won't use anytime, the AUR and rolling release so that saves you the extra hassle of upgrading your distro every year or whatever

@Coffee Guy actually now that i think about it, i would rather download some extra megs to avoid the hippie status that comes with arch. and also, i wasn't, in this case, talking about this specific addition but the general tend towards a bigger iso size. doesn't matter anyway now that i changed my view.

As a user who is trying Linux on VirtualBox to get acclimated, I tried a manual method of installing Arch Linux. It took me a while to get it set up, and while it's nice to learn the goings of it, it isn't very good for a new user such as me (although I knew about it prior). Having a guided installation will definitely help anybody to get going on Arch as fast as possible. Elitists may be mad at it, but it's a great feature for new users.

Not difficult, there’s an option to preserve existing partitions and install straight to one of them, third question in the installer asks about drive selection. So it’ll be /dev/sda3 or something dependent on your existing layout, and the script should let you select that as an option, format it with your choice of FS, and then continue as normal.

this is an interesting point to me. of course this will make it easier to install Arch, but there is still some difficulty with maintaining Arch. when I say maintaining Arch, I mean for example running pacman -Syu at a regular interval (once a week for me personally), NOT installing outdated and unmaintained packages from the AUR, using timeshift to backup system files in case something breaks, removing orphaned packages... maybe others can add their suggestions. Arch Wiki has a great article on System Maintenance, and Chris Titus also put out an excellent video on how to "make Arch stable". it's not that hard really but there is some stuff to learn and things to do regularly, almost like cleaning your house lol.

I wish they would add some questions for more specific partitioning layouts. I wanted to install on the first 200GB of my SSD but the only option I have for that is to manually partition and then select the option to "skip selecting a drive and partitioning and use whatever drive-setup is mounted at /mnt (experimental)". I didn't select this and before I realised, it made and used a partition spanning the whole drive.

(6:33) One of the things I like about Arch Linux is that (just like Slackware) they ship completely stock versions of desktop environments instead of outright branding it like Ubuntu do, but I think the branding is so that the distros can still set themselves apart from one another. At least for me, I do like that the desktop environments Debian ships are at least close to stock.
Edit: I have to wonder if the Arch Linux team responsible for that installed had considered forking Manjaro Architect that was discontinued some years ago.

      Choosing between GPT and MBR
GUID Partition Table (GPT) is an alternative, contemporary, partitioning style; it is intended to replace the old Master Boot Record (MBR) system. GPT has several advantages over MBR which has quirks dating back to MS-DOS times. With the recent developments to the formatting tools, it is equally easy to get good dependability and performance for GPT or MBR.

"I think that was my fault, so I'm not going to criticize the installer for that. I just probably typed in something incorrectly, I think it was language/keyboard layout at the beginning. I typed in US, instead of the number that goes for that keyboard type."
No, that's not your fault. That fault lies with the Arch team. It was a communication problem, and an issue I can see some people falling for. The end user should never need to look something up to install a piece of software. This could have been mitigated by a proper GUI (or at the very least, having options like at 2:15). This just shows the stubbornness of the "hardcore" Arch folks, and their team. How is the average user even going to know how to run the installer, anyway. The installer should run at default, with the "traditional" method being a secondary option. I think I'll just tell people to stick with Manjaro, for Arch installs.

Wouldn't install for me. After reaching the step where you specify which additional packages you want installed (Firefox) I was met with an entire screen of error messages...the installer then just aborted and returned me to the command prompt.

I've been told Arch Linux had an installer years ago but they discontinued it.
Still a bit primitive compared to script installers but glad to see they are giving it another go.

Will Arch let you install / boot from LVM only? Ubuntu has for at least the last 2 LTS releases
Will Arch still break random software/dependencies on update? Ubuntu hasn't (as long as I stay away from HWE) for at least the last 3 LTS releases
let me know when Arch grows up
(Yeah, I know Ubuntu is for n00bs - but it WORKS)

    • @-r-3542
      @-r-3542 3 года назад

Well Ubuntu is not exactly for noobs, it's just for people who don't want to mess to much with kernels, dependencies and etc..
Arch works very well and is somewhat stable if the user really knows how to make it stable, the focus is bleeding edge software but you always can install older versions of software..
