How Animaniacs Ends The Hate For Reboots In 22 Minutes

  • Animaniacs is the latest of animated reboots that people were pre-emptively excited about. Within 22 minutes, the show has stellar comedy, great animation, and an amazing Pinky and the Brain skit. While not perfect, it shows that reboots aren't automatically bad.

      Angrynoodle Twenty Five *Finally,* someone who (kind of) agrees with me about season 3! Personally, I can't judge the actual quality of the third season because I basically dropped out around mid-season 2, but from what I understand about the post-family reunion episodes, the crossovers and such work for me roughly as often as they don't. For an example of both, it makes sense for Daisy to make her debut when she did - because she hadn't been acknowledged beforehand and they put enough of a spin on her personality that I can get by it - however, it *doesn't* make sense for Magica to suddenly be presented in her old design for no apparent reason (especially because I prefer her reboot design, which was *right there* if it was needed come on, guys!) And of course, the writers' favouritism towards Darkwing Duck became especially obvious in season 3, to the point of making a whole double-length backdoor pilot just to get a reboot of that show off the ground-which, unfortunately, worked in their favour. If you want a tl:dr, I mostly agree with your stance on season 3, with the main difference being I don't think I would like it directly because of the absurd amount of intertextuality.

    Old Animaniacs: has a song that’s literally just listing countries names. There are segments where Wakko performs opera entirely in belches. There are numerous segments that are a parody of Goodfellas... with birds.
    New Animaniacs: does none of this
    Critic: it’s not clever enough! It didn’t blow me away by having a valid point that no other show has made! And what does “it’s not your dad’s Animaniacs” even mean?
    Me: it’s not that hard to figure out. The kids who were fans in the early 90s world be around 40 now. With kids of their own. And there’s only so many valid points out there about anything (and why does saying a point after someone else make it any less valid?), and this show was never edgy or topical and was mostly pop culture parodies or songs, so why would you expect more than that? It opens with a parody of Jurassic Park, a movie that’s almost 30 years old, that should have been your first clue.

    • @Everythingbagel196
      @Everythingbagel196 3 года назад +16

      While the humor and stuff might not be the same, I do have to say the animation is a TON better than it used to be! The songs were usually better in the old one too, but I’m pretty sure they got a new song writer so that might explain it.
      I feel like the main problem with the reboot is that they are focusing on the world’s problems a bit too much... The older version would make tons of references to the problems of the world in small jokes, but they were always scattered around, and not the main focus of an episode, so if you didn’t care much for politics, you could still enjoy the show!
      Besides all this, it was still a fairly decent reboot, and some of the episodes were pretty funny, with some really clever jokes scattered here and there. I really hope they bring back the other characters for the next season, it would be great to see Slappy, Skippy, the Goodfeathers, etc. again!

    • @weepingdiscord6969

      @chrissmith6097 3 года назад +1

      @@Everythingbagel196 I don’t have a problem with the reboot. It’s got the same humor and feel as the best from the old sketches, it let go of the not-so-great stuff that weighed it down, and I agree the animation is better. And having seen half of the new episodes so far, I can assure people that the over reliance of meta humor slows down immediately. One episode is Greek gods & myths, another is overly cute anime/my little ponies. And I won’t spoil anything, but the show knows you’re wondering what happened to Slappy, Rita, The Goodfeathers, and everyone else... you might see them sooner than you think.

    • @WinVisten
      @WinVisten 3 года назад +5

      No it isn't... like, at ALL. Reboot ≠ continuation. A continuation would continue the story of the original (hence its name) and not just take place afterwards. It would explain what has happened since then, fill up plotholes, and would probably use a style identical to or nearly identical to the original like the Samurai Jack one did. A continuation of a show would also pick up where the story of the original show left off before it was cancelled.
      A reboot is intended to be a new version of the show that is marketed to a new audience with no story continuity to the original version, or at the most incomplete continuity, with the Animaniacs reboot falling into the latter camp. It does take place afterwards, but it makes little effort to fill in the plotholes and in fact CREATES them, and it also doesn't explain why many things have changed. You can't really have a continuation of an old show made now if that show has little continuity to begin with or has no consistent story that lasts for the entire show, like how Samurai Jack, Teen Titans (the ORIGINAL), Avatar, Steven Universe, or the Legend of Korra do, because there's little if any story to continue from.

    I love the Animaniacs reboot and when compared to most cartoon reboots right now is that not only did Steven Spielberg returned as Executive Producer for the series, but also the original voice cast: Rob Paulsen (Yakko & Pinky), Tress MacNeille (Dot), Jess Harnell (Wakko) and Maurice LaMarche (Brain) have all come back to Reprise their roles for the reboot. I honestly can't imagine the Warner Siblings and especially Pinky and the Brain being voiced by different actors.
    My ONLY main criticisms are that Tom Ruegger (the original creator) and the original crew (including Sheri Stoner) were not asked to return for the reboot and the removal of the secondary characters (e.g. The Goodfeathers, Slappy Squirrel, Rita & Runt, etc.) cause as much as I enjoy the Warner Siblings and Pinky and the Brain, the side characters are what really made the original show special and it's not the same without them, cause the whole point of Animaniacs was that it's a variety show not the Warners and Pinky & The Brain show. However, I heard that the side characters (Slappy Squirrel, The Goodfeathers, etc.) could return for Season 2 or Season 3 and become part of the main cast again if the show does well.

While most of the songs in the reboot didn't impress me as much as the songs in the original series did, the songs in the pilot were very strong. In particular, "Catch Up Song" was the moment where I said "This show is going to win Emmys," and I certainly hope that song wins an Emmy. I could tell that a lot of effort was put into writing that song. Most of the lines in the song had internal writing coupled with strict meter demands, and only a skilled lyricist could work around such strict guidelines. I also love how the song changes tempo and style throughout the song to match the tone of the lyrics. There are a lot of songs that I would describe as lazily written with poor lyricism and pedestrian melodies ("Gucci Gang" anyone?), but "lazy" is the last word I would use to describe the songs in this pilot episode.

    Personally I’m sure this reboot lives up to the hype, but there is one thing that truly bugs me: The producers downplayed Dot’s cuteness in favor of a more assertive personality. The reason this bugs me is because the change implies (to me at least) that cancel culture has reached a point where suddenly it’s politically incorrect to have a cute personality. I know that’s probably not the implication, but if it was like that, it means that Webby or Miko or Lily or Baby Yoda would be universally despised as backwards stereotypes just because they’re adorable, and the people who came up with them would be slaughtered by the SJWs for the same “reason”. Once again, probably not the intended implication, but it’s still pretty irksome to me

    • @ldragon8480

      Dot's always been cute and assertive though? At least I've always seen her that way.

    • @galacticglamourgirl
      @galacticglamourgirl 3 года назад +3

      I'd argue Dot has always been assertive; there's a lot of moments in the original show where a "special friend" will dismiss her for being a "simple minded girl" and then she beats them up or something like that. Dot's character was meant to subvert the trope of the one girl in the group only existing to be cute/call out the guys for acting silly whilst not having much personality themselves. She was just as wacky and funny as the boys and was more than just a cute face.
      Since the 90's, it's way more common for female characters in cartoons to be actually funny, witty and more than their looks now, which is great! But now the trope that Dot was originally meant to subvert is essentially dead (or at least not as prevalent as it used to be), so what would be the point of continuing to go "wait she's cute AND has a personality?! WHHHAAAAT?!" in the reboot? Being more than just a cute face isn't special anymore. So whilst she still acts cute (The Cutening, for example), I can see why they'd choose to downplay it a little in the reboot, not because being cute is problematic or anything like that.

    The reboot season was kind of a mixed bag for me. Pinky & the Brain was, for the most part, consistently good (I had issues with the election episode). But The Warners spent a bit too much time and energy reminding us this was a reboot. Nora Rita Norita, despite having a name almost designed to be remembered easily, doesn't feel distinct enough to be memorable. She didn't appear that much, so there's nothing about the character to become engrained (for me anyway). And for some reason, that extra-pointy nose kinda bugs me.
    The "Bun Control" episode was--hooboy. I didn't get the point they were driving at until around the end, and it kinda falls flat as social commentary. OK KO did a much better episode on the subject.
    While they ditched the rest of the expansive cast of supporting characters, they do try a couple new additions. A gnome that lives in people's mouths that's more bizarre than anything else, and an alien that a little girl thinks is a living toy or pet. *That* has potential, but I can't say it wowed me.
    All in all, I'd say that this wasn't the worst reboot I've seen (even if I included comics), but it feels like something's missing, and they're replacing it with jokes about the show originating in the 90's.

    The original, from my memory, didn't have nearly as much real world references unless it was something that would impact the majority of the audiences. From children to adults. From the reviews I've seen so far, by people I trust and having similar interest, is that this isn't the case anymore and there are many bias references in the show. And as a kid, I actually like the "Hello nurse" and Dot's reaction to it. It was a down to earth moment that was also balanced as Dot was also seen fawning over men at times with Wakko and Yakko not noticing it too much until it distracted Dot from the task. All these reboots and other classic shows getting these agenda based scripts is annoying. And it's a cartoon. Why mess with it if it's all jokes and funny skits. I understand being offended, but people are wearing their hearts on their sleeves too much and these things show it. I wont watch the remake. The creator has nothing to do with the new show and neither will I. Let comedy be what it is and let classics not be tainted by IRL problems. These are for entertainment. Not everyone will like it and some will adore it. That's ALWAYS the case. If you divide loyal fans and new wave ragers and cater to the voices and not those that partake, then it's just a shot in the foot for the companies. And in this state of the pandemic, I can't see why they are still sticking to the new when ratings and reviews aren't near what they were for the original. Just my two cents no one asked for.

  • @cullenlatham2366
    @cullenlatham2366 3 года назад +1

    I had the same general hangups with the first episode of the reboot, with one additional one. The new complaints is that the advertising may have done the first episode better than the first episode did on its own. I'd estimate about 70% of the warner siblings section of the episode was shown just in the advertising. In some instances, the advertising ruined what would have been a good joke, such as the "First lines" skit which was shown IN ITS ENTIRETY within the trailer, which made the sketch old on arrival. In others, the trailer did the joke BETTER by cutting out some of the fluff and making the joke snappier, like the information tablet sketch, which in the advertisements, dropped the shot of the info getting downloaded directly into the brain, thereby making the joke land better.
    As for what i agree with about your criticism, it is the failure to overcome hypocrisy, doing a bad job of introducing the show to the new viewers (though there is enough context to figure it out, and the general void of worthwhile content in the warner siblings section of the episode which lamp shading did nothing to solve.
    On the other hand, i do not agree with some of the criticism. The 2 main instances are the "dont think about it" logic behind the pinky and the brain sketch, and the prediction of how the world would go to sh**. The easier one to explain is the predictions. When the show goes out of its way to explain preproduction of the show was in 2018, it becomes a lot easier to accept the extremes they go to. Yes, pessimism always exists with people saying "next year will be even worse", but very few comments in the category go as far to predict how much evil is ahead of us, leaving the extremes that Animaniacs go to acting as satire of such mindsets. Then the joke gets an extra, originally unintended level of humor from the irony of current world affairs being so unpredictably bad.
    Next, the "dont think about it" logic, which makes me think you misunderstood the plan. Brain's plan wasnt to get on the show Pinky was watching 20 years ago, but to create a vehicle that would make it easier to use such fascination against the world he is aiming to control. The implication is that in the Animaniacs universe, Brain was the sole creator or a main contributor to the creation of both the internet and the devices to use it, which means step 1 was successful. Step 2 was where the problems occurred. Brain needed to create something special enough to get those first few views. Even with the eventual downfall of Pink's mistake, the message is clear, and the interpretation that is compliant with the setup of the sketch is that Brain's tech was used against him, while also critiquing the nature of viral fame as a whole.

And Fuck Byrd, I'm glad Katie Rice is not like Robin and the only good that Robin have done is expose John.K for being a child predator. I'm giving the second reboot a chance and John.K was 100% not involve with the reboot at all.
