I loved this episode. I'm not even a huge deathmatch guy myself, but I've always appreciated Onita's legacy and influence in wrestling. It was also great to see Terry Funk looking well and in good spirits.
Jericho nearly suffered the same fate as Hayabusa in December 97 in WCW when he fought Curt Hennig on Nitro. Hennig was in the right position for the Lionsault but when Jericho hit the Springboard, he didn't do the full flip and Hennig improvised by putting his knees up. If he hadn't Jericho would've ended up just like Hayabusa.
@@WalkBesideMe Curt Hennig was also the guy who introduced Stone Cold to Kevin Dunn. Say what you want about Kevin Dunn, but Curt was definitely one of those guys who looked out for others in the business. Genuine good guy
Funny all the hate on FMW. Pure wrestling fans supposedly, but fans of ECW, AEW, Mick Foley, Moxley, etc. They still told stories regardless of the deathmatch stipulations. Funk/Pogo vs Hayabusa/Tanaka was unbelievable! Smfh the women have more ball... heart than this comment section lol
I believe Onita is the reason Moxley is facing all these Japanese stars recently. They're building to do another barbwire exploding deathmatch between the two.
I laughed when Onita said that Arai should have just told the Yakuza he couldn't pay them. I don't think that's what they want to hear when they come to collect.
Megumi Kudo the orginator of the Kudome Valentine aka The Kudo Driver (some may know it better as The Vertebreaker), that was her creation. Hurricane, Homicide and anyone else that uses the move can thank Kudo for being the one to invent it.
All credit to her but I don’t want to see a women in those kinda matches ever again she retired very young because of the injuries she sustained wrestling that deathmatch style.
Not everything in wrestling is about hitting people with chairs & putting people through tables & fluorescent lights tubes & all that other crap. Its called WRESTLING moron!!!
Don't take Lawler too seriously about that. Heyman went through Memphis. That territory had their own fair share of gimmick matches, table spots, and high spots. The Lawler/Idol/Rich feud were brawl spots themselves.
I never experienced FMW. Never been a big hardcore wrestling fan but it seems like these companies are ones to give guys a chance when the big ones won’t. Lots of eventual big names seem to roll thru these companies so in that sense they brought some value by keeping dreams alive when the big companies wouldn’t give some people a chance at the time.
While I hope your channel goes on for many many years, here’s hoping that if you do decide to end the show, you last line is “One generation. No successor”
The only thing I didn't like in the episode was Onita's remarks about Arai's death. He bailed to be a movie star and left an unqualified man to hold the bag and face the consequences of his yakuza dealings. And yet, he sounded so unsympathetic to Arai's plight. If he thought that made him sound cool with the cigarette and all, it didn't.
I think you looked into the last part a bit too much, that man also had a part of responsibility in his own death , Arai, knowing he was in over his head, should've had the good sense to not mess with the Yakuza as well, not to mention force Onita out if his own content. Besides unsympathetic wouldn't matter if the man's kids sorta blame him for his death unfairly
I know honestly screw that stuff. The man and his family were destroyed by Yakuza and all this guy can say is “I survived” like this guy is kinda a big loser to act superior in a moment like that. Again Dark Side could’ve edited to be like that but it’s still honestly shameful the other things he said.
5:45 Actually, Foley was allowed to wrestle in FMW in a 6-man tag match alongside Mike Awesome and Terry Funk, who was feuding with Hayabusa and Masato Tanaka.
Yer I’m honestly not a fan of him cause of that. Despite all that Arai did he tried to keep FMW company afloat and ho early I feel like the documentary should’ve been more about Arai and how his family is now.
Not a fan of this deathmatch crap but I can say at least he was trained by a true living legend like Terry Funk which is more than I can say about that overrated clown who calls himself a wrestler Nick Gage
Wasn't really digging this episode mostly due to me not being a fan of deathmatch wrestling that stuff just ain't for me was cool to see Terry Funk in this though he comes across as the sweetest yet coolest old guy.
I think Jerry Lawler and Solomonster need informing that barbed wire matches were being booked as far back as the mind 1930s. Also,Foley absolutely did wrestle for FMW in April of 1997. Maybe you shouldn't have a channel trying to act all knowledgeable when you don't even know easily researchable things like these. You should be ashamed of this absolute failure of a clip.
All the respect in the world to the guys who worked in it, but I just think that exploding barbed wire deathmatch is one of the most idiotic stipulations in wrestling history. It makes wrestling look as fake as possible, while also limiting the wrestlers' movesets because they can't irish whip the same way. At least the lights out match is just a glorified no disqualification match, which is more tolerable. Exploding barbed wire deathmatch is just moronic.
A fetish? Omega legitimately spend the majority of his career working in Japan. And Moxley is in tune enough with the wrestling world that he knows the guys from Japan are some of the best wrestlers in the world.

That shit as funny as it is,is unfortunately one of the first things I think of when I think of FMW.
Thanks for all your hard work, Solomonster!
I believe Onita is the reason Moxley is facing all these Japanese stars recently. They're building to do another barbwire exploding deathmatch between the two.
Onita is beaten up and too old to do anything. There is a reason he mostly retired in the late 90s
I would bet Onita is Moxley's main influence along with Jake Roberts.
I laughed when Onita said that Arai should have just told the Yakuza he couldn't pay them.
I don't think that's what they want to hear when they come to collect.
Right did he think they were gonna be like "Understandable, Have a Great Day" when he told them he couldn't pay?
They would’ve kill him right away if he did that.
I implore everyone to check out the history of fmw podcast. The final years of Fmw are wcw 2000 bad.
Can't wait to hear what Deadlock thought of the episode, because Jawnny LOVES deathmatch wrestling, especially stuff like FMW.
