Once one returns from sin and repents, is one then “possessed” by the Holy Spirit?

    • @BibleAnswerMan
      @BibleAnswerMan  3 года назад

@omama847 ~ Paul writes about the Christian being “bought with a price.” In this sense, the Christian is to avoid the bondage of sexual immorality and indentured servitude (or “slavery”). Christ is our redeemer. He redeems us from sin and He sets captives free (Gal. 3:10-14; Lk, 4:16-21).
Biblical writers never used expressions like “Holy Spirit possessed” and the like. Whereas there are plenty of examples of being demon possessed instances of saints being described as “possessed” by the Holy Spirit are nil.
Nevertheless, the Christian is described as being “filled” and “indwelt” with the Holy Spirit. See 1) www.equip.org/bible_answers/what-does-it-mean-to-say-the-holy-spirit-is-in-you/ 2) www.equip.org/bible_answers/is-there-a-difference-between-indwelling-and-infilling/

Yo mama,, possessed,! I see what you're getting at.. I think a better word for it, is too indwell.. when you are saved, the holy Spirit indwells us and gives us a new spirit and our spirit is sealed until the day of redemption.. it's a permanent thing! Jesus said, I give unto them eternal life and they shall never perish and never means never! Also the holy spirit , the spirit of Jesus, is our comforter, our guide and our helper.. the holy spirit is also referred to as a gentle person..

Repentance is a change of mind that leads to a change of heart that leads to a change in actions.
This change involves both a turning from the darkness of sin and a turning to Christ who is the light of the world.
Acts 26:18 "To open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins, and inheritance among them which are sanctified by faith that is in me."
Repentance in the scripture is defined as a turning from all sin.
Ezekiel 18:30 "..."Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin."
1 Thessalonians 1:9 "...ye turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God;"
Ezekiel 14:6 "...Repent, and turn yourselves from your idols; and turn away your faces from all your abominations."
Repentance is a gracious free gift of God, and not works as some have erroneously and foolishly concluded.
Acts 5:31 "...for to GIVE repentance to Israel, and forgiveness of sins."
2 Timothy 2:25 "...if God peradventure will GIVE them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth;"
Acts 11:18 "...Then hath God also to the Gentiles GRANTED repentance unto life."
Repentance and Faith are heads and tails of the same coin, you can't have one without the other, if a person says I don't believe in repenting of sins for salvation they don't have true faith, and are not trusting Christ alone.
Acts 20:21 "Testifying both to the Jews, and also to the Greeks, repentance toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ."
Mark 1:15 "And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel."
Because repentance is a free gift from God, Sinners have no excuse not to repent, no matter how enslaved they are to their sins, and no matter how impossible humanly speaking it is to turn from sin. When God commands The Impossible he makes it possible.
Matthew 12:13 "Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other,"
Acts 17:30 "And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:"
When God gives repentance the change of heart is so great that there are works that follow, these Works have nothing to do with our Salvation they are just an Evidence of it.
Jonah 3:10 "And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not."
Also some use the excuse not to repent of their sins because it says in the scripture God repented. However when it says God repented it doesn't mean that God changed his mind, because the Bible says that God cannot change, it simply means that God changed his course of action and God has the Sovereign right to do this.
Malachi 3:6 "For I am the LORD, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed."
Some erroneously teach that you only repent of one sin and that is the sin of unbelief however in the Book of Revelation we see that God expects repentance from all sin.
Revelation 9:20-21 "And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts."
Anyone who teaches that you can embrace all your sins and embrace Christ at the same time is teaching a lie.
2 Timothy 2:19 "Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity."
The best way to create false converts is the methodology of 1- 2- 3 repeat after me, which teaches Lost Sinner's to honor God with their mouths while their heart is far from him.
Matthew 15:8 "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me."
Not once in the scripture do we ever see any of the prophets, Apostles, John the Baptist, or Jesus Christ ask a sinner to repeat a prayer after them, even after Adam and Eve had broken Gods law and had been confronted by God about it, he did not ask them to repeat a prayer after him, but in these last days this has become a popular way of accumulating professions that we can boast in.
1 Corinthians 3:6 "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase."
Unregenerate men are the enemies of God in their mind through Wicked works and yet we have some modern day Bible teachers that say that sinners don't need to change their mind and turn from these Wicked works when they come to Christ. (The gift of repentance takes place in the heart and in the mind)
Romans 8:7 "Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be."
If a person is a product of repeat this prayer after me and have never repented of their sins they are still a worker of iniquity and they don't have saving faith.
Matthew 7:22-23 "Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity."
If a person absolutely refuses to repent of their sins because they love their sins then Jesus has a thought for you to ponder.
Mark 9:43-48 "And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire: Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched."
Also unbelief is a transgression of the moral law just like any sin, and for modern day Bible teachers to say that sinners have the power to turn from this sin, but do not have the power to turn from other sins is pure blasphemy, they underestimates the gift of repentance and the power of God. They have no scripture to support this heresy just their own carnal wicked reasoning.
1 John 3:4 "Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law."
Many false teachers give sinners a false hope that they will receive Mercy from the Lord without forsaking their sins and trusting Christ alone but this verse of scripture tells us otherwise. We only have two options with sin repent of it, or cover it. If we cover our sin we are justifying them and the false teachers of today would have us believe that we can cover our sin while coming to Christ. it's a lie!
Proverbs 28:13 "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy."
Why do people hate the thought that they would have to turn from their dark sinful ways and turn to Christ who is the light of the world.
John 3:19-20 "And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved."

      Jonah 3:10
      King James Version
And God saw their WORKS, that they turned from their evil way; and God REPENTED of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
ITS VERY CLEAR THAT REPENTING FROM SIN IS WORKS SALVATION, AS A BORN AGAIN CHILD OF GOD WE ARE TO TURN FROM OUR SINS BUT NOT TO BE JUSTIFIED,
SANCTIFICATION IS A LIFE LONG WALK AS WE CONORM TO THE IMAGE OF CHRIST BUT SOME REMAIN BABES IN CHRIST. ITS VERY DECEPTIVE TO INCLUDE WORKS AS PART OF THE GOSPEL, WE COME TO JESUS WITH ALL OUR SINS
AND WE RECEIVE GRACE AND JUSTIFICATION BY NO MERIT OF OUR OWN BUT BY HIS SACRIFICE,.
      THIS IS BIBLICAL.

in the Gospel of john, John mentions the word believe or forms of the word believe over a 100!!!,,hundred times!!in the original greek, pistuo,,,pisteuon,,,,and never once does he mention repent.. example John 3:16, God so loved the world that he gave us only son that whosoever believes!! in him.....also nowhere in the New Testament is there any mention of repentance of sins..only in one mistranslation, the one the Catholics use, does it say this.. regarding james,,, taking it all into context James clearly is speaking about faith equaling spiritual life.. not works.. he may also be witnessing to the unbelievers that were amongst the true believers.. the gnostics, that thought there was no such thing as sin and they had no sin.. to say James is speaking of any kind of works regarding faith is wrong and would contradict all of Paul's letters..

Hank with all do respect you are incorrect. Repentance is not a "U TURN" . Repentance is a 'Change of Mind". So the next question should be " REPENT" of what to be saved. REPENTANCE needs an OBJECT. So when it comes to Salvation we need to "REPENT" but from what?? From "Thinking" you can save yourself to "Believing" that only Jesus can save. CONTEXT, CONTEXT, CONTEXT. SO when you believe the Gospel you have already repented. Now that we are "Saved" and Justified freely by His Grace should we Repent of Sins? Yes but we "Should ". Its not automatic. By Abiding and walking in the Spirit we will bear fruit but those don't save us or prove we are saved. They show that we are maturing. Salvation is truly a FREE GIFT. Believe IT!
I highly recommend the book "Repentance" the Most Misunderstood Word".By Michael Cocoris.

elgriego331 Really good point. I can’t vouch for the book you mentioned, but your points are absolutely valid. You can see from the caller that the prerequisite of turning from sin leaves people either crushed by the law or satisfied in their own self-righteousness. Jesus did the work by atoning for our sins on the cross, so we must trust Him alone to save us. Why do so many people add works back to the Gospel. In the book of Galatians Paul says that any “gospel” that adds works (doing good things and/or purifying self by abstaining from enough bad things) is no gospel at all.
Yes, as believers saved by grace, we should turn from every evil thought, motive, and action that displeases our Savior. We should go all in with pursuing Holy living. But our right-standing with God only comes when our assurance of salvation is in Christ alone.
Stand strong in that faith. Don’t let the subtle teaching of works drag you back under the yoke. Remember, as Galatians says, those who trust in performance are obligated to obey “all the law” - something that neither Hank nor I can do.

risingStar Really happy it blessed you. It’s not my words but the Bible speaks for itself. It’s plain as day that we are saved eternally by placing our trust in Jesus’s sacrifice of Himself.
In regard to your friend about baptism. Everything apart from just faith in His finished Work is a work. Solo Fide.
Water Baptism is a command but to show what’s done inwardly outwardly but it doesn’t save. Paul wrote
“Yes, I also baptized the household of Stephanas. Besides, I do not know whether I baptized any other. For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect.”
      ‭‭I Corinthians‬ ‭1:16-17‬ ‭
Paul is contrasting Baptism with Gospel here. The Gospel is separate from Baptism. Baptism is good and we should do it but it can’t save.
Also the Book of Johns main purpose was written to share the Gospel to non Christians and repentance is not even mentioned once. Also baptism is never brought up to be saved. That’s amazing 😉

I have never understood where the idea of faith alone to such a juridical extent that no "works" are involved to the point of removing free will and even bringing forth the idea of double predestination comes from. It is just wrong. Of course faith is an act performed by you out of your free will given by God, and therefore could be considered a "work". This is followed by the changes a person makes in every aspect of their being and life, all works. Any action and thought, physical or mental, is performed by you from the basis of free will and so is a work.

@me myself and I Us believing and repenting is what we do to receive salvation. When Jesus was on the cross, he said “it is finished”, meaning that our debt had been paid in full. That he bought our salvation fully.
I think you might be getting caught up on what the Bible means by works. We have to do something to receive salvation. Not earn it. If God just gave it to some people and didn’t give it to some, regardless of if they chose to receive it or not, that doesn’t seem just to me. When the Bible says that it is not by works that we are saved, it means there is nothing that we can do to earn it. Good works won’t save us. Only God can.

Repentance has nothing to do with salvation of Jesus. everyone can repent hindu, Muslim or any individual can change thier lifestyle to better being .. . Meaning repentance is a work done by individual with thier spiritual awakening moments ..Paul clearly states slavation is by grace through faith Alone. I didn't see repent here. . Many Churchers are decieved by these teachings . Dispensationional teaching of Gospel is a must . God has different salvation plans for different time or era. Jesus teaching on repentance or born again was mainly focus to the Jews at the time not our churches..Jesus sacrifice himself for all at once by his grace alone . That's when another salvation plan came to the churches of the dark ages . Many teaching have false doctrine . Beware! , salvation is by grace through our faith Alone . Repentance makes you only better person and more righteous person. And there is always a reward and blessings for the righteous. But it has nothing to do with your Salvation.

yes this bible versus is proof you must work for your own salvation, yes repenting is a work. I will explain. what is needed for repentance? you have to first feel remorse. second you must fix any actions that your choices have caused. third you have to kneel down and pray to God with a sincere heart asking for forgiveness. fourth you must turn away from the sin and never commit that sin again. the last part is the most difficult for all of us and is why this caller is realizing that you cannot be saved by the day you accepted Christ but that you must work for your own salvation, we are saved by Christ from two things that's spiritual death and physical death. this we cannot boast that was a free gift from God. but we must keep and fallow the commandments and work daily and endure to the end other wise we will get cast out. this is why Christian born again are deceived.
