We built one (R2-3P) is his name… he’s an R2 unit, back in 2019. He has pride of place in our lounge room and comes out when we watch Star Wars movies to ‘participate’. We still get a giggle out of him and he is still going strong 5 years later
Yay, I'm so happy Benji got to do this fun experience. He is so cute. The Droids are so fun. I know if I was a kid. I probably want one. And I'm not even a Star Wars fan.
My son was dying to do this and I was surprised it was only $99! For the whole experience and a working robot, seemed pretty affordable for Disney prices. It hasn’t gotten played with too much after the first week but still a cool display piece for his room.
Thank you so much for putting this video together. It’s exactly what my 6 year old son wants to do when we visit Disneyland in May. In fact he wants to build an R2 D2 in black and red as well!
My sons and granddaughter loved making these! Violet, age 6, had to make a purple BB8 to match her name, my sons both made their own versions of R2D2, one in original blue and one in black. They all loved the experience and would recommend it to anyone who loves Star Wars or robots for that matter. The personality chips are fun too! Thanks for a great video. I can see how much fun you guys had making that Droid! 😊
I took my son their yesterday and it was his favorite experience at Disneyland. Plot twist. Now we’re on day 2 at Disneyland and all he wants to do is go back and build another droid. Unfortunately my pocketbook can’t manage it😂
My son made a chopper version. The cast members told us most of the chopper and R2D2 parts are interchangeable. They are more than happy to help if you want to mix and match the two.
As an observer, I loved this experience. The Benjamin’s excitement and enthusiasm was worth it, IMO. Good to know about the unit sizes. I can see how one would want the BB Unit since BB-8 is so cute. But I’m older and love the R-2 unit and am glad Benjamin picked/designed such a great astromech.
I have two Droids that I made in Droid Depot at Galaxy’s Edge. Their names are CB-6C (my BB unit), and S5-L0W (my R5 unit). I plan to get a C-series Droid (which I would name C1-4RA), and maybe one more BB unit (name has yet to be Decided). But for now, I have my Two droids.
We hadn’t played with the BB unit much because of how hard it is to steer it, but the R2 unit has been getting some use (and we pulled the BB unit out and it’s getting use, too. It’s just harder to manage).
Hi! Thanks for making these! We’re from Alabama and will be coming to DL and then to San Diego Zoo at the end of April. Trying to go after spring break and before schools get out! Your videos have really helped us out a lot! We’ve been watching on my husband’s account mostly. We decided to start with DL with our 4 year old and then when she gets a little older take her to WDW. Just wanted to say thanks!
That’s a good plan. Disneyland is cheaper overall for the experiences she might be too young to remember. Of course, you’ll remember her reactions and that’s the important part at this age. Enjoy! I hope you have a great time.
It looks pretty worth it if you ask me. We last went to disney before Galaxy's Edge was built, but around when the early versions of the Legacy Lightsabers were releasing. I hope next time we go, we'll visit, but we'll be visiting Disney world in Japan, as we are moving there soon.
I love my pre-built CB-23 from the ST: Resistance cartoon. I noticed that her parts are on the conveyor now but I don’t know if the personality chip is available separately. I’m bringing her back to the park to react to the land and rides.
Mine is named Bobbie B Beboop (must be said with intention to make musical beeping noises)- I will say however - Building a light saber has a story and entertainment factor that comes with it. The droid was - here you go pick out build it and go away feel. So if you are wanting an experience to go with it - there isn't one outside of what you make on your own. You do however get to build it (with parts available) as you want it. Check to make sure parts you want are there first before setting up.
Yeah, that seems to be the case, but if someone is coming for a once in a lifetime or once in a long while trip, I'd hate for there to be a fluke that day and they can't get in, so making a reservation is best practice, just in case. More of a peace of mind thing.
We took ours on the plane as either our carry on or the personal item, when we got the one in Florida (the blue one I shared some clips of). I don’t remember the exact classification of luggage, but we took it on the plane with us and put it in the overhead compartment.
My son and I each built a BB unit (June 2024). Would agree that the controller it comes with makes the BB very difficult to control since its either 0% or 100% power. The Droid Depot APP for your phone/ipad/tablet however, includes a digital controller which lets you control the BB unit much more precisely and do partial power. Still not perfect but a much nicer driving experience versus the included physical controller. Also lets you program 'dance' moves for any of the droids which is super neat.
I personally think this experience is a ton of fun! I do personally think tis worth it if you don't already have one. My only wish (same with Savi's) is they add new parts/colors more frequently for greater customization and uniqueness. Though you can always paint your droid like i did, but no everyone wants to do that
It was really fun for both of our kids. Benjamin this time and James last time we did it. They’ve both been playing with their droids at home together every day since Sunday (when we did this).
Great video! My 11 year old will definitely be doing this when we visit next year. I also have a 7 year old girl who is not interested in Star Wars. Is there any other unique experiences around the park? Would love to know about any other personalized souvenirs/experiences eg. I heard you can get a caricature done near pirates of the Caribbean ( not sure if that’s true). I feel like you can get a lot of the merch outside the park for cheaper.
Yes! Very well put together. Our kids have been playing with theirs pretty consistently the last few days and my biggest concern is actually the gears inside because Benjamin has a habit of running it into the wall and then keep driving it forward and the gears start to grind. But no problems so far.
Thanks for making our planning a breeze, can’t wait to bump into you when we visit the parks in March I have a question, we are coming for 4 days March 11 to March 15th with a break day in between on the Wednesday So far we have Mon- DL Tuesday- DCA Thursday- DL Fri- DCA Travelling with my husband and 2 daughters 5 and 8 The first two days work great as the early entry would be in the other park so we might get a few rides done without the early entry crowd The question is if we should swap the last two days Pros: DL on Fri means we get to see the fireworks And no early entry crowd Cons: We would miss the Incredicoster as the refurbishment ends on the Friday so if we do DCA on Fri we get to do the rollercoaster but early entry crowd and the two less hours Note: DL is running until 12 AM the entire week and we have Genie plus for the entire duration of 4 days Please suggest 😂
That really just comes down to your priority, fireworks or roller coaster. I’d pick roller coaster personally, but we rarely watch the fireworks. With four days, the other thing to consider is a hopper. It’d be an extra $280 for your whole trip, but you can go back and forth as you please, and it’s a breeze to do. We ping pong back and forth regularly.
@@SoCalDisneyDad Thanks a ton. I too was thinking that it would be a great moment for my 8 year old What do you think about the impact of early entry crowd?
@@apoorvavajpayee6734 It’ll only affect Guardians and Radiator Springs Racers mostly. Crowd-wise, it might be a tad busier, but a festival will be going on and DCA is going to be slammed after hopping time one way or another. Thankfully, most of the crowds will be at the food booths.
Hey Traver! We have reservations at Oga’s at 4:30 and check in is at 4:15. I was thinking of making a droid right before we eat. What time would you recommend? How long did it take?
Not at all. This activity is less popular than the lightsaber building and you could probably walk up day of without issues. But make an appointment just in case. But you could even make an appointment day of in most cases.
I got the BD Unit droid from the Shop Disney website. He interacts with the Droid Depot droids and he is great. The whole experience of building a droid looks so fun.
Yeah, it’s not something we do frequently. Last time was 3 years ago. Definitely a must for Star Wars fans who won’t be back to Disneyland for a long time though.
Yes, you can actually have any purchase shipped to your home, not just the droids, if I remember right anyway. At least that’s the case at WDW as I’ve had a few things I bought there mailed home. I haven’t had the need here, so I’ve never really thought to ask, but I assume it’s the same.
I think its worth it if you want a custom one. Id probably just buy a default premade r2d2 or BB8. I think its cheaper. My adult brother made a custom red R2 droid. They gave him a free red head, they probably have a surplus of unpopular heads.
Based on Shop Disney it looks like the prebuilt R2 is still $99.99. And the BB-8 appears to be more expensive at $119.99. But that’s online. It might be $99.99 in store because the online is for anyone, and the WDW Droid Depot costs $119.99. And while it looks like you can custom build actual BB-8, the options don’t exist for R2 looking at my footage again. So that’s interesting to note.

I just made one named R3-Y6 he’s a first order red on black droid, such a cool experience
Yay, I'm so happy Benji got to do this fun experience. He is so cute. The Droids are so fun. I know if I was a kid. I probably want one. And I'm not even a Star Wars fan.
He did have the best time. Still talks about it. Granted it’s fresh, but he really liked it.
My son was dying to do this and I was surprised it was only $99! For the whole experience and a working robot, seemed pretty affordable for Disney prices. It hasn’t gotten played with too much after the first week but still a cool display piece for his room.

I wanna build my own droid and lightsaber one day

Benjamin said he can do it on his own. So cute!
He wanted to carry everything and do as much as he could. I was very proud of him (usually he wants us to do everything for him. 😂)
Very cool ! Thanks for showing us how you build a robot.
We have this coming up end of February and we’re excited. It was great to get a little heads up on how it’ll go.
Hope you enjoy it as much as we did!
I liked James's dance at the end!😊 Benjamin will have lots of fun with that.
Would you suggest making the Droid or the Light Saber?
Not even a star wars fan but this looks so cool!
It is really fun and my kids love their droids and play with them often since they're remote controlled.
It’s so fun watching you guys. My family is the same as your, mom & dad and two boys who are 6&7
We are definitely doing this on our next trip!

My husband and I built a B series. His full government name is BB Robert Downey Jr 😂
We did this. It was an awesome experience and we still play with our R2 with our boys. Can’t wait to go get a second one
We hadn’t played with the BB unit much because of how hard it is to steer it, but the R2 unit has been getting some use (and we pulled the BB unit out and it’s getting use, too. It’s just harder to manage).
Totally worth it, my droid I built broke, but disney sent me a whole new droid meaning I have two r5 units.
Thanks for this review. Heading to Disneyland this fall and want to make one, my R2D2 one for DW needs a friend!

I’ve found that at times WDW is a lot more strict about certain things than Disneyland is. I like both parks though. I like that they’re different.

Why there is no BD1 type? 😔
In June I just walked in and there was no wait. Not sure if that was an anomaly, but it was a really easy experience. Well, expensive, but easy

I walked in as it was so quiet on the day we went which I think would usually be near impossible if it was a normal day
Super helpful as I’ve never done this and I want to explain it to my friends whether they should do it or not
the Ferry Droid kit fits the C series as well
Wooooow looks cool! Thinking how to bring one to Australia (but before needs to go to México and Europe 😅😅😅😅). Thanks again for a new video

Awesome, thank you for sharing the experience. I'm definitely considering building a Droid now when I get go again.
It was really fun and much more affordable than the lightsaber experience. Though I think both are great.
@SoCalDisneyDad I did the lightsaber last time I went. Your video on that was very helpful. And the experience was amazing.

Great video, my kids were considering this, very helpful!!
It was really fun for both of our kids. Benjamin this time and James last time we did it. They’ve both been playing with their droids at home together every day since Sunday (when we did this).
How far in advance can you make the reservations?
Two months.
You can do Walk-ins you just need to ask if there are walk-ins available.
Have they made know to add r7, r8 or r9 heads to the r2 style line-up?
So cool! One thing we haven't done yet!

My 5 year old loved doing this a few months ago. My only dissatisfaction is she made a stock R2.
Like didn’t pick any custom colors? Or you mean just didn’t choose special heads?
Really like your son’s droid , great video!
Thanks for making our planning a breeze, can’t wait to bump into you when we visit the parks in March
I have a question, we are coming for 4 days March 11 to March 15th with a break day in between on the Wednesday
So far we have
Mon- DL
Tuesday- DCA
Thursday- DL
Fri- DCA
Travelling with my husband and 2 daughters 5 and 8
The first two days work great as the early entry would be in the other park so we might get a few rides done without the early entry crowd
The question is if we should swap the last two days
Pros: DL on Fri means we get to see the fireworks
And no early entry crowd
Cons: We would miss the Incredicoster as the refurbishment ends on the Friday so if we do DCA on Fri we get to do the rollercoaster but early entry crowd and the two less hours
Note: DL is running until 12 AM the entire week and we have Genie plus for the entire duration of 4 days
Please suggest 😂

You didn’t really need one then either. It was pretty empty. It’s still a good idea to make for those planners out there.
