How long has it been since you let yourself really be scared by a ghost story? Here's another choice tale of the supernatural from my mouldering collection of terror tomes.
Mr French has a voice, tone, and cadence pleasantly similar to Vincent Price. Great narrator for a great tale.
There is a suggestion of Mr. Price’s voice but Mr. French’s voice is much more nuanced and if velvet had voice surely is would sound like Mr. French.
SO WHAT...... yeah the man is good in this field ❤
How wonderfully narrated dear Edward. As an Englishman who loves the old dialect, I can give you top marks. I’m a lover of all things Victorian when it comes to ghost stories. This one is utter genius. If you like Benson I can recommend one call ‘pirates’. It’s very diferent but beautiful. Think id cry myself to sleep in joy listening to you narrate this one, my heart would be thumping with the nostalgia of it.........
Please consider it my dear friend.
As a so called " Brit " can I just say once and for all how tired I am of hearing
that only British narrators can deliver a proper telling of a ghostly tale .!
Complete drivel !!.....There are several examples on RUclips of absolutely
awful British narrators droning on in a metallic monotone either much too quickly
or at funereal pace with words stressed completely at random .
Presumably in their own mind they consider themselves the heirs apparent to
James Mason ? Edward's rendition here is far superior in every respect to
most of them. A pleasure to listen to. So, thank you Edward . You deserve far
more views / listeners .
Noone can outdo James Mason.
@ Jackie Hamilton
Quite right ! Charlton Heston was another American with a magnificent reading voice .? I don't think Olivier did any audio books but his narration for The World At War is perfection .
Beautifully narrated , what a delight to listen to such a gentlemanly voice . Thank you , and best wishes from an elderly English woman 👵🏼
Thank you, Christine. What a sweet compliment. It means a lot for a New Englander-a Yankee- such as me to know there's some approval for my American narrations from a listener in England. Cheerio. E.E.F.
Me, too !!
This Edward French voice? Wow. I wish his voice is on all audio books. Beautiful narration.
Thanks, Edward. You may get your wish one day. The technology is coming where you will be able to program an audio book narration with any voice or sex you program into your listening device. E.E.F.
Wonderful story , I am going to lie down and enjoy hearing it read so beautifully. I love the timbre of your voice Edward, it's so richly satisfying on the ear. Thank you
I appreciate hearing that Fiona. I try to do justice to the wonderful authorship of the very ENGLISH Mr. Benson, despite being an American. This is where the importance of being an Earnest Yankee must count for something. E. E..F.
@@FrenchEdward06 Your olde world rich tone and command of English is beautiful Edward , and made for reading the classics. As soon as I hear you I am transported into a gentlemans panelled library , sat listening dreamily in an armchair by a fire, with a brandy in hand.
Your gorgeous voice and storytelling is always earnest and believable. You bring every tale to life , most especially the classic ghost stories .
Love and respect as always 😘
Fiona Cahill I second your opinion! Vincent Price was excellent also!
Mr French must have schooled Vincent Price in voice. Wonderful beautiful voices.
I agree, wonderful voice. Reminds me of Vincent Price 😊
I think this set in Dunwich a village in Suffolk England. It was in the 13century a prosperous port city, when huge storms ravage it and fell into the sea.Today a delightful village with a ruined priory. It is said the bells of the churches beneath the sea can sometimes be heard.?!
Sounds very like it. Regarding the abbey in the photo at the top, I kept being reminded of the one at Whitby, a place which is famous in horror history for other reasons.
Thank you Mr French,
I do so love your wonderful narrations and although you have your very own unique style i always hear a whisper of the marvellous echoes of Vincent Price, who beloved as an actor i also love his ghostly tales
I just recently watched a superb old film called Dragonwyke and was startled at what a good looking chap he was as a young man, he certainly had great presence & no way could be be termed " wooden" haha
Im on a Edward B French binge tonight as we are, in Britain in the far north, being battered by storms & deluges !
What better way to spend a winter evening
Yesterday was the worst as storm force winds created havoc
& i was bemused to see from my bedroom window, looking down into the road below, a dining chair with a Frisbee sitting in its seat in the middle of said road!
Wind or Wierdness? Who knows
Have you considered any of the works of Amelia B Edwards? A contemporary of Charles Dickens
Or Sheridan Le Fanu?
I do love E F Benson & i think he had a brother who also wrote stories.
Theres a wonderful story by a well known old English actor (late) called Arnold Ridley who wrote an amazing haunted railway station story, cant think of the name & could be something like the 7.15pm Express To ? Or there abouts
Have you read any of the wonderfully odd but enchanting stories by Angela Carter?
She is one of my favourite English authors, died too young but left an incredible legacy of wonderous stories
Tales of The Night Circus
The Toy Shop
Are just 2 of my favourites.
Thank you so much for this video
Hope you are keeping well & in good cheer 🇬🇧👧
Thanks for the suggestion, Italia. Carter is new to me. I'll look up these stories. Amelia B. Edwards is new to met to. Le Fanu is on the "backburner"......I'm noting Arnold Ridley... It's very encouraging when I hear positive reactions to my attempts at reading English lit from British listeners. I appreciate it. It's flattering to be compared with V. Price but I try NOT to sound like him-EXCEPT when I read "The Fly." Where I live, in Southern California, the electric company cuts the power when we have high winds. The power was off on Thanksgiving Day. The explanation is that a fire could start with downed power lines, we're experiencing drought conditions and a fire could spread very quickly.....I'm doing O.K. Vaccinated, testing regularly and working. Be safe and Well. Cheers E.E.F. .
My favourite Benson - one of the most terrifying tales I can think of.
Yeah, I love how most of it is left up to our imagination. Not many Benson stories do that.
Mr.French, Thank you for these, its just what I needed.
Horror is supposed to give you a twinge not beat you over the head with the supernatural strangeness Excellent reading
I couldn't' agree more. Thanks for listening...and your kind comment. E.E.F.
Exquisite narration!
I love EF Benson...and this was a perfect reading, I could literally feel the dread 💜
I am a big fan of ghostly old fashioned radio drama, this is up there with the best tales, also the storytelling is wonderful with this narrators rich deep masculine voice 🎉
Thank you. KUDOS to the great E.F. Benson! I post stories here each Saturday and hope you have subscribed to the FICTION FANTASTIQUE Channel! E.E.F.
@FrenchEdward06 yes, thank you...
Horrible!
Thanks, as ever, for this excellent reading.
Recorded impulsively. I hadn't heard of it but was reading that H.P. Lovecraft thought it was terrific. Well, I'm not a big fan of Lovecraft but I found it and was hooked on this story . I found the story of E.F. Benson's life interesting, as well. E.E.F.
Excellent narration. Thank You from London UK.
You are WELCOME. Thank you for the kind comment. E.E.F. ( I upload new stories every Saturday and hope you'll listen again. )
When I first read this story, it felt like a cold steel hand wrapped itself around my sphincter. I'm delighted to report, Edward, that you managed to replicate the same feeling with this reading! 😨🥂
If you don't mind, I might quote you in promoting the channel. It's amazing how powerful this old story is. The horror is attributable to the very gradual building of tension. A lesson for would-be writers of horror fiction. Thank you. E.E.F.
What a voice! 👏🏻
One can hear the master Boris Karloff in your voice, but of course the talent is all you, well done!
That's a KIND commentary, Carlota. You've discovered my secret. I wanted to grow up to be Boris. E.E.F.
You achieved that & more! I don’t even particularly enjoy Benson, but you made it haunting. 💀Can I put in a request for the underrated author H. Russell Wakefield? His story “Blind Man’s Bluff” would be perfectly paired with your talents.
@@CarlotaZimmerman Hi Carlota- I think I like Benson's IDEAS more than his narratives....I will find a copy of "Blind Man's Bluff" and check it out. Thanks for the suggestion. Cheers. E.E.F.
@@FrenchEdward06
I think you're more a Vincent Price . Excellent 💕
after last night's horrible "debate" (9/29/20), it is so good to hear a normal person with such a calm voice. thank you much :)
What a fantastic reader. Fantastic!! Thank You.
this was really scary - i’m still wondering what her connection was with the dead guy. brrrrrrr it’s cold. . .
dear Alexa - there was no connexion - just random evil!
Brilliant story beautifully read - no explanation should be necessary - the story stands by itself and leaves one with deliciously unanswered questions. Your narration is perfect Mr French and I love your accent .
Thanks Rebecca. I think Mr. Benson was a crafty old writer when he left those "unanswered questions" dangling there for us to supply our own conclusions. That's why this old story still haunts us. Cheers. E.E.F.
Thank you, I enjoyed this so much. You have the perfect reading voice for ghost stories and I love Poe, E.F. Benson, Elizabeth Gaskell and M .R. James.
I appreciate your comment, Jasmine. I'm partial to the "vintage" or "period" ghost stories. They lend them selves to being told aloud. E.E.F.
Amazing , absolutely amazing !!!
The story greatly resembles "The Man with the Nose" (1872) - by Rhoda Broughton, Though both exudes their own unique horror.
Makes no sense. A guy that died two hundred years before this lady was born just starts to haunt her childhood dreams? So big deal his body is unaffected by spores, molds, and fungus. There is no reason, no link between the two. Not a well written story to be honest about it.
The reading was done well and sounding like the late Vincent Price certainly helps matters. I will be listening to more.
Thank you for sharing this.
An excellent reading of a familiar tale.
Fantastic story and such a wonderful narration!
Thanks David. It's a strange one. I'm still wondering why all these events happened. What exactly DID happen? E.E.F.
Great Tale, And Great Story Telling, Mr. French!!😊
I read this years ago, and it was unforgettable. That was an excellent read of it.
The silky voice of a young Vincent Price perhaps.
Adorable children. Oh yeah this is fiction
Your voice is like a cross between Tom Noonan and Vincent Price.
I'm their "love child." Thanks for listening, George. Stay well. E.E.F.
I thought this was Vincent Price narrating.
Awesome narration edward. As always!
Thank you for this! I read this story some decades ago as a child, and it's always stuck with me. Unfortunately I could never remember the author or title though, and could never find it again all these years until randomly coming across your narration here just now.
I'm glad to have re-introduced you to it. Cheers. E.E.F.
Goosebumps galore!
Still one of my favorites.
I've always thought that this is a true horror story. Benson picked a housewife to send his horror to, makes one feel uncomfortable, like even though one that can be going about one's every day business, they too, can enter a living nightmare.................................Thanx Edward : )
I thought it was interesting and off-kilter. A bit wacky that the doc prescribed going off alone in her condition....but that sort of illogic is a tradition in horror stories and movies. Anyway, Benson knows where fear lives! Thanks for listening. E.E.F.
@@FrenchEdward06 the same presence that suggested "Rushton" to Dr Baring was the same someone that told Dick about the fine Van Dyck portraits at the Walton Gallery...skillful writing
SPOILER: I liked it a lot. It was disturbing in a preordained way. Would have been interesting if the casket revealed her, with her face in the same contortion and then another unconnected child having the dream.
It's beautifully written. I find It's disturbing because the ending is still a mystery. Definitely preordained.....but why did it happen to this poor blameless person? We can only speculate. E.E.F.
Spookiest story ever written
Vincent Price is what comes to me
A voice so like Vincent Price and so appropriate for such tales.
Nice compliment Cindi- I hope you will subscribe to the Channel. E.E.F.
Lovely ..Thank you
"It's an abomination of desolation" :-D
Beautifully read. I first came across this story as a young man and it has stayed with me my whole life. Truly terrifying. In fact the only other story which frightened me as much is LeFanu's Strange Event in the Life of Shalcken the Painter in which another young woman finds herself the object of a dead man's lust.
Tremendous!!
I see by your photo that you are acquainted with Yorick. Only last night I watched, again, the Mel Gibson and Glen Close version of Hamlet!
I haven't seen that one. I like Olivier's but I think Branagh's may be the one that would most engage newcomer's to Shakespeare's poetry. E.E.F.
Wonderful. Thank you!
Thanks, Rosie! E.E.F.
What’s the music at the end? Nice touch
Seamus- Check out the credits at the end of the readings. I post a brief biography of the author and myself (of course). The source of the music is also credited and in some cases I will also post where you can download the track I've used. E.E.F.
@@FrenchEdward06 - Thank you & sorry not to be more observant!
@@seamusheinousproductions Thank YOU for listening. You have good taste in music. Dominic Frontiere's Outer Limits music tracks enhances more than a few of my readings on the channel. Cheers. E.E.F.
I like it
Creepy Tale
Superb, both in the writing and the reading! Thank you.
Great story and a great reading. Thank you.
Great reading. Profound and clear voice. Thanks.
You are most welcome, warehousepalmas. I appreciate the comment. E.E.F.
good narrator!
fear on four.
Dear Edward, never knew you are American. You sound like a English Sir. Done Oxford. You are the first American I can listen to. Mostly I don't like the American accent.
so who was he?
That's the beauty of it, explanations can be like a wet blanket to horror stories, some times.
@@paulw.9669 No the story was very predictable and the reader is left wondering why the heck was he haunting her. I heard that the author was misogynistic.
@@zerogeass21 makes sense - but then why was she such a lovely person? a weird story and i don't like it!!!! oh well - :}
Very enjoyable story 😀 Brilliant narrator to.
