  • A trove of artwork amassed by real estate tycoon Harry Macklowe and his ex-wife Linda during their nearly six-decade marriage brought in a combined $922.2 million at Sotheby’s over the last six months, setting a record for the most expensive art collection to ever sell at auction.
Rothko’s “Untitled” painting from 1960-which had never before been displayed in public before the sale-fetched $48 million and was the most expensive piece of artwork auctioned Monday.
Another star of the sale was one of Warhol’s final works: A self-portrait that was completed just months before the artist’s death in 1987 that sold for $18.7 million.
Combined, the two sales surpassed the $832 million record set by the late banker David Rockefeller and his wife Peggy in 2018 when their collection was auctioned off for charity, Sotheby’s said.

Some fantastic pieces in that auction! The Willem De Kooning and the Warhol (self portrait) are both spectacular.

Lee Krasner certainly helped transform the market after her partner Pollock passed away and she took over his estate.

This is an interesting story because their entire net worth basically consisted of their art collection. So they spent nearly ALL their money on art.

Yeah but you gotta respect that there able to play the market really well, I mean yeah the rich are getting richer but the middle class arnt doing anything to earn money just work at a job and nothing else. And the cycle oddly repeats itself to other people as well

As an artist myself who has always been good at making replicas. I have started my own collection of replicas of paintings i love for own private collection. I make them where you couldn't tell a real from a copy. Took me a very long time to master this craft. Freud, Basquiat, Guston, Neo Rauch, Egon Schiele, Tamayo, Rockwell, Condo, Bacon, Currin, Frazetta, ect.

@@jeanmichelbasquiat4444 I enjoy the styles of Freud, Rauch, Rockwell, Condo, Bacon, and Currin. Though I am quite a novice In more modern art in general (enjoy a good landscape painting from the 1800’s 😂) so would def be open to some pointers or styles that you enjoy most as I wouldn’t want to ask for something impossible. Please feel free to PM me to speak about this further as I assume doing this in comments is a bit scandalous lol.
