    Ah man. This is going to be so amazing. I am going to need to plan a vacation around when this lands or something because I foresee opening the game up and like a good book, not being able to put it down! I love that the skill checks are are going to be varied, but still tied to your cards, i love that your companion helps you figure out the world and adds quirky abilities, this game is going to be So. Much. Fun! Thank you for making this video:)

    This was an amazing video. I was backing Spirit Fire based about 90% on faith in Orange Nebula, and about 10% curiosity. Now, after seeing how it works, that has changed to 90% faith, 20% curiosity, and 90% excitement. I'm in on this, 200%!

    Really helped to get to see the game played beyond the ideas the gameplay is trying to instill in the player.
    Puzzles seem fun, and not a substantial amount of randomness to the turns facilitates that "optimize your spark" game you are talking about. Liking it so far, both in challenges and quest structure. Excited to see some more in the next week or so before deciding on backing 🙂

    It was great to see actual gameplay! I'm very interested in how this shapes up. The challenge spreads are a very cool and unique gameplay system that I'm excited to try out. The overall art and presentation is phenomenal across the game, too. At first blush I was a bit turned off by the 'touchy feely' nature of the hero Kickstearter video, but after learning about what Spirt Fire is all about I'm super excited for it. I just backed it, in fact. :)

    Fantastic video! I was on the fence with this game, as I loved the look of it but was totally confused on the gameplay! This has 100% convinced me that I need to back this game. Now to decide what colour pack to choose. ❤

    Great video, finally some gameplay. It was hard to understand how these systems interacted before, but this video did clear that up. I still have one question thought: Can a character start in any realm?

      That's a great question. On your first playthrough you'll start in the Awakening realm, as that also functions as a tutorial, but later characters can start wherever you want!

    thanks for the video. helps explain quite a bit. combustion, sparks, spreads, capacity, all good things. only thing missing is what happens when a day ends/deck runs out. would have like to have seen that.

    Loving everything I've seen so far and glad to actually see that I was quite close with my assumptions on how the game flows and plays so far (though I realise I might be in the minority on that one :p)
    Been all in for Vindication and Unsettled (one of our household's favourites) but will sadly need to sit this one out :( . There's a wedding coming up that will demand more or less (read all) of the extra moolah.
    Looking forward to see more of the game and how it evolves over time. And you can bet that I'll be back once I'm able to do so. Keep up the awesomness Orange Nebula!

    I commend you guys for making what, so far, truly feels like an open world game. This reminds me of some amazing games like final fantasy X that I felt like transported me to another world and another life not my own. I have high hopes this will be similar (no pressure :). Now the one thing missing… a beautiful soundtrack tailored for each realm you’re in :p

    The dice and the Flickermechanic are my favourite
    - what weve seen so far from the map seems pretty linear reminds me alot of Etherfields tho
    -The milestone mechanic is also very exciting

      Yes! We love milestones and flicker too.
      As for the map, all we've shown so far is from the opening tutorial section of the game, which is intentionally very linear. As things open up and your quest stack deepens, it gets way more open-world.

    Great video! Do we get to deck construct before each challenge or only at the beginning of each play session? I assume before any challenge… or is there a mechanism that triggers that lets us create the deck for the challenge?

      You can adjust your deck any time you "rest." When you rest, all your burning spirit fire go out, your resolve resets, and you have the opportunity to adjust/build your deck and change which conduits you have attuned. MOST the time you might change a single card or two-if you got something new, or you realize you need a little more of a certain type of card-but in the event that you come up against a challenge that is going to take some serious preparation, you would do that during this "rest" period. Often what that looks like is you're going along, working through encounters and quests, and then you'll hit a quest that stomps you or is beyond your reach and you then stop and say "ok, this one needs real prep."

    This video really changed my mind, I wasn't keen on backing it because I'm not really a solo gamer but it looks and feels great. Also the two-player pledge and you mentioning Elden Ring and Breath of the Wild, two of my all time favorite games, had maybe something to do with it ;)

      Btw, the idea that the art on the quest cards somehow resembles the map on the back of the location cards is genius! I don't know if this has been done in board games before but you can definitely see the Elden Ring influence here...and it was one of my favorite gameplay design choices. It's so subtle but you still feel like you are a treasure hunter and all you have is some vague hints.

    I have watched this video a number of times and came to a realization. First, you guys were very careful not to refer to spark as "life". I imagine this character is living a lifetime of experiences and choices that shape the world and once the spark is extinguished a new character is born to continue the journey. Not unlike a "reincarnation" of sorts. A completely new character that must navigate what was previously left behind. Clever and fascinating.

    Love this! Exactly what i thought this would be from the campaign page. Only one small suggestion. The wording on the challenge stack header for not ending movement in a node touching another shape could be misunderstood. I took touching to mean adjacent when it was demonstrated as actually in the shape. Other than that, i saw no problems. Seeing a major production video will be a treat for sure :) waiting on pins and needles for my new 3 planets to get here for unsettled 😊

    Much thanks and love for this great introduction! I have a question: Has spirit fire a general replayability? So can i create unlimited characters, when the spark runned out? Or is there a physical/card limit? And i think the encounters is creating some sort of variability, am i right with that assumption? Keep going, i'll definitely back this one❤

    the ways its currently presented, I can relate it to an MMO where exploring is the main selling point. you are solo exploring the world but anyone is welcome to join. I can finally quits WOW after this. 😅

    This video is great, really interesting to see some gameplay.
    Regarding resolving the encounter card shown in the video, if you don't want to add that card into your milestones, how do you resolve it? Do you just place it back in the box? Or do you still have to play the mini game?

      Clever question!
      Some cards go into your milestones regardless. So, random example, if you encounter weird spores, you dont have a choice, weird spores happened, its in your milestones. Other times though, if you have an encounter with a condition that must be met in order to add to milestones, and you DONT WANT to meet that condition, you can simply stop the encounter and then the card gets filed away as resolved. There are exceptions to this of course, some encounters get shuffled back into the encounter deck to be met again, and unique twists like that. So, I guess the answer on this long and rambly response is: IT DEPENDS ON THE ENCOUNTER! :-)

    This game looks tailor made for me, I just fell in love with the concept.. I have my $1 dollar pledge in place, the only thing stopping me from going full in is that unfortunately shipping to my country is basically twice the pledge, and it is just not worth it, I hope I can get this game in retail ASAP, I love every single part of this game & thematic....

    Are the different aspects for choices going to be delineated by a symbol or other shape as well as a color? Might be hard for some to differentiate.
    Is the choice to tell the player what their character is feeling the same throughout? Or is it more intended, maybe, to be like a found journal sort of idea, implying others may have gone before you to complement the replay theme?
    What sort of products are intended to support the game in the future? Realm packs specifically or other stuff?
    Digging the vibe and the focus on choice over reducing health points. Been hoping for more stuff like this.

    Curious - how does the drop in and out mechanic work for multi-player? Does someone just join your realm on your section of story? Do they join your quest? Do they need that same realm? Also - can they play a quest with partner A then go and play same quest with partner B later?

    It's drawing me in now that I appreciate better how everything works. I have a concern that maybe the encounter puzzles could get old once you had seen a few of them, but its difficult to know without spoiling everything.

      I'm curious how often you'd end up replaying the same encounter, but I anticipate a different reaction. When flipping to a puzzle you've already come across, I think it'll be a love/hate relationship. If your previous experience(s) were positive, then it won't be too bad to do it again. If it was a slog, you won't be very excited. I'm sure some of the puzzles are better than others, but that's subjective. Hopefully there's always a choice between at least 2 (like in the video), then you'd have agency to balance it all out.

      These are great thoughts. We are super duper committed to this being a hugely fun part of the game, so we're leaning into it big time. There are dozens and dozens of these different challenges, and each of them can be changed by the specific card that takes you to them. So, if you are in a negotiation spread (which resembles a tug-of-war), yeah you may have performed that type of test before, but the quest or encounter card that is presenting that challenge has variables on it unique to the specific negotiation you are performing that bends the challenge in new and unique ways.
      Because the cards introduce new variables and effects to the spreads, the variation of the experience is pretty much limitless.

    I got so confused when the Challenge Spread came out. The idea behind it sounds amazing, but I'm struggling so much to see how that little maze represents inspecting a platform.

      I think the idea is that you had to put in the effort to reach those two nodes individually. It required careful thought and planning (and a bit of luck regarding the transmutation key), and it wasn't reliant on a lucky dice roll like skill checks in D&D are.
      Basically, it required some thought to reach those nodes, much like it requires thought to understand a new language like these runes.

    At 56:37 Between the nodes are links with a arrow, which you have to follow. In some cases there's a link, but no arrow pointing out the direction. So you can move in both directions ?

      Correct, unless there is an arrow you can move between nodes in whatever direction you choose. You can go back and forth repeatedly if you want ;-)

    Question: The encounter card reads to me like this: "When A occurs, if X is true, do Y, if not do Z." In other words, completing the encounter appears separate from collecting the 2 flicker. However, you define collecting 2 flicker as the way to "complete" the encounter. So is completing actually separate from collecting the flicker? Or is it not? If so, how do you determine when the encounter is "complete" when you don't run out of cards/max out your capacity?

    Really excited for this! I’ve got one question though, it’s mentioned on the Kickstarter that once you open the end-game black box you can start additional characters, which is cool. Is it possible to get the game to a point where you can’t play anymore or can’t start new characters? Is the whole game resettable back to its original state as if you’re playing it again for the first time? Or will there come a point where I’ll need to buy an additional copy of the game if I want to replay?

      Hey Nick! Everything is fully resettable if you ever reach a point where you want to take it back to factory fresh. :-) Each pack of cards has a list of its contents printed inside it, the packs are reusable thick paper, and each card has a little alphanumerical code on it designating which pack it goes in 🙂

      @@OrangeNebula no bait, times are tough and I just wanted to give you positive feedback. The video was enough to give me an idea and answer my questions. It also helped me be less concerned about playing it with more players as it seems very suited for solo play. I will always have your back in some form even if the current game is not a match for me. But as Tom said, "since your whole model is to make games Brett shouldn't like but ends up liking" I will support this one too. Hope to never see the day the model fails.

    When you was undergoing the challenge, and had to 2 columns of cards, is there a limit as to how many cards you can have in either column, I know you used the clear action a few times but wasn't sure why 😂

      You can end an encounter after you win it or end it after you fail it. Just being unable to move on is not the only way you can fail it.

      @@Tenzer57 You can continue to draw on that sheet (overdrawing lines is fine) until you turn it in to unlock a card. At that point that sheet has been used and is dead to you. Well, except we're using the back of those sheets to have a little "game save" system, so you would probably save the sheet for that. But THEN, after that, the sheet is dead to you.

    is there anything to stop a scenerio like this from happening:
    I have 2 bowl haircut icons from the monks but since I don't have 4, the warriors will still talk to me. Then, my friend joins me to complete a quest and between us we now have 4 bowl haircut icons so new monk stuff is unlocked but the warriors now hate me. I go do the newly unlocked stuff, then my friend leaves and now I'm back to just 2 bowl haircuts, so the warriors like me again even though I already did the stuff from the monks that was supposed to be (presumably) either/or.

      Great question @@desireegreverud3723 . The way multiplayer works is that the milestones are tied to the realm, not to the player. So if 2 Clues About Ghosts have been discovered, then that's true for all players present. If a third player joins, situation stays the same that there are 2 Clues About Ghosts discovered. The realms are each their own "instance" (in computer speak) so if I play in the underground realm at Sarah's house, using her copy of the realm, and then go and play in the underground realm at Shawn's house, using HIS copy, any icons I revealed at Sarah's house stay in the realm at Sarah's house, and aren't revealed in Shaw's copy. Hope this makes sense. :-) Great questions.

    I would want to see how this would play with two characters/ players. As I do not think that it would be any satisfaction to play as one character for multiple players. I understand this is mainly solo game, but if there is way to see how 2 characters in same realm would operate and how realm changes because of that, would be great.

      Even in multiplayer, the challenges are still played individually, but there will be ways to help each other out with it (details of how players can help each other out might come later, but not sure if during the campaign or post campaign development).

      Just picture this video, with 2 people doing it on their own, at the same table. That's it. The only interaction would be when you go back up to the map board, someone else might have uncovered something you didn't. But this really is a solo game and should be viewed as such.

      Sorry, that was an old ruleset. In the current design, once you run out of cards to play (or your capacity is full) you REST. When you REST, your burning spirit fire all goes to inactive, your resolve resets, you have to quit any challenge you're actively attempting (return to the map) and you then have the opportunity to mess with your desk or equip different conduits. Then, you spend a spark to start your next session and get back to it!

      If I'm understanding it correctly, the colors of the lines that connect the nodes form the different shapes. Nodes that touch lines with different colors touch different shapes.

      If you look at the way the circles in the spread are looped, then the buttom half below the Begin circle is a big pentagon. The third circle in that pentagon is also part of a loop of three circles that create a triangle. Then on top you have a trapezoid of 4 circles and an ellipses of 4 circles.
      So it is basically the loops you can do that defines the different shapes.

      Yeah, the lines that connect the nodes of this spread are colored, but you're right that its hard to see in this camera angle, and almost certainly will be redesigned before we go to print. Very much an inoffice prototype. This is our version of a post it note or hand drawn component :-)

    Just one question: why do you named "Move" "Push"? Seems like a weird choice of words for me and confused me a lot while watching the video. I understand the idea behind Ignite and Focus to make it more thematical, but "Push" for moving just doesn't make sense.

      Because they are trying to trick the heck out of you. the deception is real. Clearly you are trying to "push onward" when really you are just walking forward, aka moving. If you haven't seen the KS page it's full of keywords and buzz words to trick you into thinking this is any different from any game that "has the same out combat". Instead you're going to do "skill checks that aren't combat", and you'll somehow NO MATTER WHAT, never experience a Flight or Fight response, aka human nature. But don't worry you'll get lost in the abstraction of "push" :)

      A great comment and something we definitely felt at first too. :-)
      Melibabe has it right, that the word "move" makes sense on the map, but was confusing people when we talked about the challenges (and any other circumstances where the action might be used). We like PUSH because it has the connotation of "push forward" or "push through" which can speak to physical movement as well as internal processing (which is what lots of the challenges represent).
      Definitely agree that its a bit odd at first, but don't worry, in our experience people adjust to it really quickly.

    Wonderful! Finally get to see how this all works.
    I still don't know. Super annoying. because it's a matter of the price tag, and space on my shelves. As a solo game I have one which is super amazing imo, but I rarely play it because for solo computer games are just far more versitile, and engaging. I also have a few solo wallet games for quick game sessions on my own away from home.
    I am still waiting for a lot of other backed projects which I do not know if I will want to keep or get rid of until I've played them a few times to judge their worth.
    Your timing is just absolutely bad. Perhaps I will wait for a 2nd edition which may well come with fixes the first edition will certainly ship with (but shouldn't).

      The challenges are abstracted, yes, but I don’t think they are completely devoid of theme. It did have the feeling of “Scrutinizing the platform” by having to go back over areas again to get to the destination. I think once we have a wider array of challenge experiences, it would make more sense. Plus it seems like actually playing this would give you more of the theme than watching someone else play it.

      Are you talking about the flicker shapes or the encounter spreads? For the flicker shapes, I think they're more thematic than "An Experience Point", maybe signifying neural pathways, chakras, or muscle memory.

      Thanks for the feedback, we're glad youre here.
      The polyomino aspect is a response to us feeling like "experience points" was deepy UNthematic. We said, applying the things you learn from experiences isn't like this in real life. Your insights and understandings have different shapes and forms that need to be connected and molded into new breakthroughs and growth, they aren't "points you spend". From there were developed the mental map system and flicker system where you have to actually twist and form your experience together to make it result in the growth.
      Very helpful to hear that we're perhaps not explaining that part well enough. We'll revisit how we talk about it. Thank you!

      Yapping? Seems a little unfair. The first 45 minutes present a lot of the mechanics and interesting features of the game. The puzzle book component is only one aspect of gameplay.

    I'm sorry, but the themes and gameplay seem way too abstract to me and the mechanics are exceedingly complex. I can't really see any reason I'd play this over Lands of Galzyr. The art is really nice though and I can tell y'all put a lot of effort into the game, it's just not for me.

      @@mushroom585 If you really like the idea of exploring an interesting world and rolling colourful dice to overcome challenges, I really do recommend Lands of Galzyr. The game uses an app, which is a deal-breaker for some I know, but it means they can cram something like seven novels worth of text into a small package. The game still contains hundreds of cards representing events, equipment, status effects, companions, and quests.
      The only legit problem Galzyr has is the character progression is non-existent, but you can fix that super easily by making it so that every 25 Renown you earn lets you either pick up an extra skill pip (up to two more) or an extra item slot (up to 5 items) or retain a companion or mercenary when you'd otherwise lose them (up to one of each).

      Seems too convoluted for me.
      Reminds me of couple other games I’ve played where there’s all these nonsense mechanics and keywords just to eventually roll dice or play a card.

      ​@@warpaint9385I was able to follow everything. The thing is there is no output randomness in this game (roll for success) as in your example. The game is highly deterministic. The mechanisms are highly innovative and all connect well IMO. ,but, nothing is for everyone. And I say all this as an initial skeptic. Watching the gameplay videos has me so excited.
