Thanks to C's reminder, I signed up for the last-minute dormitory-organized movie gathering and watched "The Heron and the Boy (How Do You Want to Live Your Life)".
The film delves into a myriad of topics, seemingly navigating through a whimsical disorder without a central theme, yet harmonizing perfectly with its title. Isn't life the same way? The various familiar memories portrayed in the movie, like a nostalgic memoir, unexpectedly stirred emotions within me. I worry if this is truly master Hayao Miyazaki's final work.
The most profound resonance emanates from the film's presentation of Japanese Wabi Sabi aesthetics - embracing the beauty found in imperfections. Imperfection, as an inherent facet of reality, reveals that true vitality lies in coexisting with flaws, tragedies, and pain in a harmonious symphony. Otherwise, one risks being perpetually bound by past traumas, constraining the boundless possibilities life offers. The great uncle, who is unwilling to return to reality, is actually trapped in it, while Mahito would rather reconcile and coexist with a world rife with malice and conflict, shunning the idyllic memories of a utopia within an ivory tower.
The movie doesn't conclude with "The End" but with the song "Spinning Globe," hinting that Mahito is blessed to come into this world. Similarly, after reconciling with the pain and contradictions of the self (the heron), our journey towards a fulfilled and transparent life is just about to begin.
