I buy lightweight fusible knit tricot by the bolt & cut into 2 inch strips. It is just like the fusible stuff you buy to iron batting pieces together. I fuse, not sew, pieces together. I cut them so they butt up to each other. You cannot see or feel where it is fused. I had batting strips FOREVER until I took time to measure each piece, rolled it up using painter's tape to tag. When I look in the bin, I can pick the size I need. This worked so well, that I am almost out of scraps! It is amazing how fast it gets used if you can see the size of it.

I use batting scraps to make blended batts for quilts. I call them “frankenbatts”. The seams remind me of scars on Frankenstein. I collect the scraps for a while, then splice with a zig zig stitch. It’s surprising how many I can make after a month or so of finishing UFO’s. I made 10 frankenbatts this weeks that were about 50” x 70”- just right for my charity work. Smaller batting bits go into pouches, table runner, place mats, coasters, mug rugs, dusters/swiffer pads. The rest are collected for donating to folks who use them to make pet beds. I do try to keep this kind of waste out of the land fill as much as possible . Happy to see others do this, too!

I used batting scraps to make design boards. There is a RUclips video on how to make them. I purchased foam board at the dollar store and a glue gun from Joann's. I ended up making about 20 of them in various sizes (18", 14", and 10"). I use multiples of the 14" boards every day. For larger blocks, I use the 18" boards. For the binding, I purchased 1 to 1.25" twill biased tape in a variety of colors. When sewing blocks together, I stack a number of the 14" boards on my rolling cart. This has been a wonderful time saver. Thank you Pat for introducing me to small design boards and the rolling cart.

I didn’t use to save the smaller strips of batting. Anything smaller than 4” went out but now I save them all. The thin strips get cut into squares or rectangles and I put a piece beside my sewing machine to stick threads on. I have one beside me everywhere I sew, even in the car when I travel. I don’t find little pieces of thread on the floor anymore. I also save them to use with the daisy & Grace templates from Missouri Star. Love the idea with the stiffer.

When I save my batting scraps, I measure them and write it on a small piece of paper and pin it to batting when I fold it up and put it on the shelf. I pin the paper on the front of the bundle. That way I can just scan the shelf to see if I have a piece big enough for what I need without having to pull things down and remeasure it.

But that was a long time ago. I just stumbled upon another very neatly stacked container of tiny scraps of batting. Maybe I should go buy s Swiffer, haha, to justify this thriftiness. @beverleybrowning3480 3 года назад

@@vivisargent8349 Hello. Sorry I don't have a standard size - our shelter wants a covering over the bed so that they can take it off for washing. I make the first layer out of sheets that have been donated to them, then the outer layer with donated blankets. So the size varies depending on how many I can get out of a sheet (some for small dogs and for bigger dogs lol!). Eg. One I just made is 30"x21", but I've made them bigger or smaller, rectangular or square. I use a few pieces of velcro to close the outer layer. I also use old pillow cases with scrap batting to make practice sandwiches for FMQ. Those are given to the shelter for the pet cages. Hope this helps. You could always ask your shelter if they want a specific size.

I just got new flooring and had to clean out my sewing room. I dumped all the batting scraps I had been saving. I wasn’t using them!

I have smiley face fabric! It's old but a guy had me make his wife a plastic bag holder with it!

Batting too bulky to keep, I also just keep larger pieces that can be used for small sewing projects like zip bags, table runners

You can't save everything. I keep a small waste basket under my cutting table and anything I deem too small to save goes in there. Goodwill takes fabric scraps so when it is full off it goes.

I make pet beds/pillows for the animal rescue league. Then I store them behind my couch 😂😂😂 once I can’t cram anymore there I make a donation trip. If it wasn’t for this, I would not save the small strips.
