Hey all!! Sure hope u have a good holiday week (those in the US that is)
Catching up on sessions, tours and the JD Simo & Friends Show this Sunday In Nashville at 3rd and Lindsley.
A conversation with some fellow session guys sparked my topic today. Basically the art of feeding the muse by being a CONSISTENT record listener. As well as constantly seeking new stimuli.
It takes effort but it really seems to be the common link in most of my favorite musicians.

When I first read musical gym, I imagined a group of guys holding guitars with a instructor yelling “ what’s the 6 of F#!!!” And the group rushing to the chord .
You’re absolutely correct about listening to all music especially music that’s new to you. It’s exercise for your soul.

I learned by ear, fishing stuff off records. It builds vocabulary and opens your ear to a player's nuances. I enjoy video content but I get more benefit from listening than watching.
