Emarabini : South African Traditional
This is a traditional Xhosa song about an orphan. The song asks "who will look after this child, for it is truly without parents?" eMarabini is sung with a new meaning today as South Africa's orphan population continues to increase due to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. The feeling behind this song is driven by a sense of hope rather than despair; as it was sung to win past struggles, it is now sung to overcome present struggles as well.

The lead singer here is a teenaged Hlumelo Marepula. Only a few years after recording this, she was already a legend as a great South African singer. But as gifted a singer as she is, she never became a professional. She had another goal. Somehow among all of her other commitments she managed recently to become a graduate civil engineer.

The UN should adopt this powerful and beautiful song -- and your singing of it -- as the anthem to mobilize people to come to the aid of separated and orphaned and refugee children everywhere. And at the same time remind the world that. in traditional village Africa with its strong and large extended families, there was rarely any such thing as an unwanted or abandoned child.
