It's funny, between 2009-2015 I could get great deals on old Bretonnian models. They really started increasing in price only after that until now they are crazy high on the secondary market! Essentially, re-releasing these old models is a way for GW to tap into that secondary market.

I literaly just came home from mu first game of Old World.
My old wood elves (a mix of 5th edition pewter and some 6th edition plastic).
    I faced Tomb Kings.
And I gotta say. These models hold up great. Are the skeletons chunky? Yes.
Do they still look cool when ranked up? Hell yeah.
I got most of my army painted (mostly in 6th ed style) But I actually right now thinking about painting all my models going forward in retro style.
I dont paint as much as I should, but if I ever complete it all I might go back and repaint the more modern look for the older one.
Red bows on the elves and red talons on the monsters? Oh yes. Yes indeed.

    Rules-wise, there is Hobgoblin.
Rank and flank wargame intended to evoke the old school vibe.
    However, it is also model-agnostic.
Separately from that, there are quite a few model lines (often in metal, so not for me) that are trying to recreate the old Warhammer style. Knightmare Miniatures look quite close - but are extremely expensive.
P.S. As someone who has no nostalgia, GW or otherwise, I am more than happy with Kings of War. As a modeler first, I find their rules very inspiring - all the mutlibasing, and unit types that have no official models.

I always loved brettonia and was gutted when they went away.
I picked up old world, assembled some archers... and im in love.
The models hold up really well for the most part. They're really easy to assemble. Theyre far simpler to paint as theyre not over detailed. Only downside is the mould lines.
And they look damn good when in a massed unit.
Its such a change of pace from the monopose dynamic squad of 5 to have a lump of 24 lads.

Was making lunch and listening then had to do a double take when I heard my name mentioned. I am in the same boat of loving the 90s aesthetic (and especially the old trolls) and spend 99% of my time painting and drooling over stuff vs actually playing games. The good news is Kings of War is miniature agnostic so you could still rock OW models with (a really elegant) KoW ruleset! Most of their unit profiles have an exact match on the Warhammer side (and was intentional for people coming over with GW armies). That said it'll probably become a lot easier to find OW meetups (for the rare actual game) over KoW. Thanks for answering!

I agree about old models. You explained it perfectly, and all the while these other RUclipsrs just keep saying that it's so expensive for old models... But why is the age of the model even relevant? It's like an aesthetic style that we like and that brings us joy! Thanks for posting.

    • @scepteredisle
      @scepteredisle 5 месяцев назад +2

You are NOT talking about aesthetics. You are talking about very old models that are primitive by todays standards sold at premium prices GW have successfully reproduced the aesthetics of these classic Fantasy models and slapped an “Age of Sigmar” label onto them - but they are vastly better models whilst looking basically the same in terms of the look.
Even if you think the new cities of sigmar have too much detail which is probably true, the tech and design is way better than the Bret men at arms. The new Cities of Sigmar, for example, are designed so that any impossible-to-avoid mould lines on cloth etc can be removed with your fingernail: the mould lines are SO FINE that they can now be removed without tools. Not even the new 40K Levithan models have that level of design. The 2002/3 Brets are covered in mould lines.

      @AnHourOfWolves 5 месяцев назад +6

@@scepteredisle I get what you're saying, the difference between models designed recently is quite noticeable, and it even makes your life easier! Why wouldn't everyone agree? I would challenge you on the idea that the differences are objectively 'better'. In truth, it's not objective, it's subjective, that is, it's just how you feel about it. I get it, you have reasons to feel that way, and you have preferences for your miniatures. Not everyone has the same preferences. I personally don't like the new designs, to me they look like they were made in a computer and they have unnecessary amounts of detail. We don't have to agree, we can both enjoy our hobby, and we can also be friends still, after all we have a lot in common!
I will agree with you that model prices are unnecessarily high though. I personally feel that all of the prices are too high though, not just the charming Old World models :)

I have actually been enjoy assembling my Bretonnia minis. They have that Legoman appeal that I don't need to follow a schematic and I can just easily mix and match what looks good without considering how they need to be assembled. They also doesn't take as much time to assemble, which I prefer. With the more recent Warhammer kits I kinda dread gluing them together.

Well, there are a lot of very great rank and file games out there these days, that are miniature agnostic and fully compatible with the old Warhammer Fantasy armies. They are also way cheaper regarding rules and supplements than the Old World from GW. Some are even free. A lot of people are playing Kings of War with their old Warhammer Fantasy armies, because the game was designed to bring your old armies over. You could even pretend that you still played in the Old World with these other rules, just for the lore and fluff. Other exciting games that are fully compatible with the old Warhammer Fantasy armies are The Ninth Age: Fantasy Battles and One page rules: Age of Fantasy Regiments. The Ninth Age is even a totally free and community driven sequel to Warhammer Fantasy Battles.
Just remember these great options, if "The Old World" turns out to be a bad game for you.

Thanks for this followup! Re: the nostalgia and the fantasy of old-style, handsculpted miniatures with bright colours -- I highly suggest taking a quick peek at Argatoria, a smaller-scale wargame by Spellcrow. The models are tiny, handsculpted, and invariably painted with bright colours and presented on grassy fields. It very much scratches the same itch. The only catch is that the models are less than half the size of Warhammer models and focuses more on a Conan the Barbarian-esque fantasy world where armour is basically nonexistent, so you get a lot of lizards and loincloths.

I'm pretty happy with the release for the most part, although some more Tomb Guard boxes would be super nice for the Khemri enjoyers out there. Orcs and Gobbos are a weird release to hype up since they didn't really need many new kits in plastic. Some other armies have some massive room for upgrades, like Dwarf Slayers and Empire Knights. If they don't update the Empire Knights I might finally break down and buy some STLs for a friend to print me some cav. They're the only kit in that stands out as being significantly below the standard of the rest. Even as a collector/painter of 'new' stuff I understand exactly what you are saying about other systems. GW games can be overly complex, much as there models can be overly fussy, but I still buy the latest Necromunda books (at least for the factions I collect) and am working through the Forge World resin. I have never played a game of Necromunda yet despite having 2 starter sets, 3 copies of the rules and half a dozen or so faction/expansion books and you could argue that I could just get the OPR skirmish and gang rules, but it's not the same. I love the retro/modern style and sculpt of the Escher. I was born in 67 so I lived through the start of Punk, New Romantics and Goth and these models have that feel (I think I may have dated a few of the Escher), I read the Frank Herbert Dune books and the short stories of Lovecraft and watched The Warriors and Streets of Fire repeatedly on VHS. This is where Necromunda comes from so no other game system will ever encapsulate all this, at least for me.
And one day I may play the game.

They should have seriously rereleased those old army boxes like you have pictured in the video, just for the sheer Pavlovian response. That upcoming Orc & Goblin box is the work of a C student. I remember walking into a GW store around 2015, and there was just one staff person there, a woman in her late 60s. She asked me what I was looking for, and I told her I was just browsing around thinking about getting back into Warhammer. And I went on to explain about a month prior I had seen the Island of Blood starter set and bought, which confused her. She said, "I thought you said you were just thinking about getting back into Warhammer," which made me chuckle a little because this is something you'd understand intuitively if you actually Warhammered. I bought the 7th edition starter set in 2010 from a modeling shop, didn't even put the minis together, I just had the good sense to buy it and stick it on a shelf. I wasn't passing up value like that, even if I never played the game again, it's Warhammer. They got a lot of MBAs and professional sales people at GW, and they think they know something, but at the end of the day, not many of them Warhammer. The product sells itself so well a Medellín cartel could be running things there in Nottingham and be doing just fine, but they miss so much potential because they don't Warhammer.

I have a suspicion Dark Elves at least are being held back, because GW intend to do something with them as a reimagined Age of Sigmar army. An army that follows -Malekith- Malarion, and probably really changes up the art style. GW don't want to prep the old Dark Elf moulds - or spend the money tooling them again - if they've already got a Dark Elf revamp in the works. (Not unless The Old World sells well enough to justify it, anyway. More of GW hedging their bets on a niche project.)

One point that made me react in your previous video however, to which you admit in the current video, is the price of the boxes. I worked in a gaming store when WFB was an active game and the army boxes, with a comparable amount of miniatures (often even lower count), sold around 300$ at that time as well. So for me, seeing around 300$ boxes 15-20 years later made me react the opposite of how you did. A full army rarely was under 1000$ even back in the day (when buying everything new, from the shelves), and when calculating the Bretonnian Box, without optimizing points in upgrades and such, I was astonished to find out the box contained around 1200-1300 pts. Adding one or two enchantress(es) and one unit of Questing or Grail Knights, you reach the 2000 pts bar, and that's for around 500$, which is also around half the price for a full 40k army as well if you compare with other GW products.
So in short, I was amazed to see how accessible GW actually made this game via those army boxes :O
Also looking forward for more videos about Warhammer: The Old World from you Dana

The goblins are 100% missing from the Old World because they are active models in AoS. Internally at GW these are different cost centers, and they will not allow cross-sales. This is why Skaven are not "official" in this edition of Old World, since all of their classic minis are currently listed under AoS. Over the years, as AoS units get refreshed, those old sculpts will become "official" Old World releases.

    • @DiamondsDroog
      @DiamondsDroog 5 месяцев назад +2

Weirdly, they're not really missing in the actual game though. Not only is the full traditional goblin range present in the Ravening Hordes book, it actually even gives rules for Mangler Squigs, a unit that was *only* introduced in AoS and has no oldschool fantasy equivalent.

You've nailed why we can't leave Old World. Also maybe why they seem to have a harder time keeping any of this stuff on the shelf.. I''m also a 90's nostalgia/Lore nut 1st, collector/painter 2nd, gamer 3rd kinda guy. Franky this suits Old World more than most titles as we know what goes into producing this spectacle. Not that I don't want to see new and shiny stuff for Old World too, but who doesn't want those trolls or a (cheap) updated copy of Skull Pass? Hopefully they have a sufficient batch on the way so everyone can at least get their books and journals and a few models already.

With regard to price and "value": It's really hard to adjudicate because so much of the costs involved are opaque to consumers. We are commonly told that the plastic itself is dirt cheap, it's the development costs that are expensive. Through that lens, I think it's totally fair to wonder why something like the old world commands the same price. I don't think the comparison to rereleases of old toys is necessarily fair, at least the mcdonalds example, since those are reworked. These by all accounts seem to not be reworks and appear to be very minimal development work on GWs part.

Hey old fantasy player , (like 25 years ) I do disagree with some stuff. It's 2024 they absolutely could of made new models across the board. I feel like they are half ass-ing this. Rules look good(some stuff is take from some other games systems to make it better (my opinion). I feel like they opened a shipping container in the backyard and was like wow we got all this fantasy stuff we got to ditch it.
They could of just made AGS movement trays for rank and file and did it that way . With armies who didn't make it reborn.

That is a cool take on the pricing, I think you have a point I still think that they could have used the opportunity for a value product that got more sales and therefore more people into the hobby. Overall I am also enjoying the nostalgia, I doubt I will ever play a game of TOW but if I keep going at this rate I will have fully painted all my old Beastmen in the next couple of months.
It is nice the have someone positive on TOW though and I appreciate your channel. I have had to unsub a couple of creators lately as it felt like they were playing the TOW hate algorithm and honestly I come to you guys for inspiration not multi-part videos on why GW's pricing sucks.

Anyone who could achieve a 60% accuracy rate would be doing well. As to pricing however, I actually expect pricing to be slightly higher then what you predicted.

But when you decide to play the Old world at some point, and it doesn't feel fun, you can always try some of the other games. I do not think that people necessary meant that you needed to buy Mantic figures when they recommended Kings of War. A lot of people are playing Kings of War with their old Warhammer Fantasy armies. The game was designed to bring your old armies over. Other exciting games that are miniature agnostic and fully compatible with the old Warhammer Fantasy armies are The Ninth Age: Fantasy Battles and One page rules: Age of Fantasy Regiments. All of these are great games, and could be a better fit for you than Old World. These game rules are also way cheaper. The Ninth Age is even a totally free and community driven sequel to Warhammer Fantasy.

I have always wondered why GW as a company has never set up another production line in North America.
You avoid the import taxes and shipping from UK to North America to the point that leased warehouse space and even leased plastic injections machines (if you did not want to purchase those machines) would be less expensive even including the overhead of personal cost.
BTW personal cost can be contracted out either directly or use an partnership program within North America to produce these models.
Actual personal is 1 person per every 3-4 plastic injection machine.
Plastic pellets used in the production is also manufactured and produced in North America cutting out one more expense that GW has vs having to import most of their plastic pellets into the UK.
Considering GW does have the numbers on how many box sets are sold in North America (Mexico, Canada and US) they could scale down or scale up production in North America based on expected sales and previous sale volumes.
You also could sale to certain South American countries from North America without the added expense of shipping from the UK. (Unfortunately some South American countries have such restrictive and/or complicated import laws, it makes it a royal pain in the butt to get anything into that country).

    • @crisismethodactor

See, that would imply GW does any kind of comparative market research. From what I’ve gleaned it’s basically all internally compared so basically this just means they huff their own farts and make business decisions accordingly.

As someone who owns 2 conquest armies and tried and got rid of KoW, the player community is always the issue. I live in a very heavily populated ttg scene in my city and maybe can get in 1 game of Conquest a month if Im not playing any of GW's games. Ive only played 2 games of KoW ever before I ditched it due to lack of interest in the community. Spending money on another IP when most are already heavily invested in GW doesnt appeal to many. I honestly dont see either game being around by 2030. The advantage of the Old World will simply be the LONG time fan base of players who have kept their armies from WHFB. Not to mention the armies in AoS that can still be used and proxied to now play The Old World will garner new interest in those who came after WHFB. I think poeple really underestimate the hype for the game from decades long WH fans. I just wonder how much that will effect AoS in the future. The Old World will have a larger player base by the end of the year compared to these two games and will probably be the dagger in the back that ultimately kills interest in those games due to how worldwide GW is and the continual popularity it will achieve from the current exposure it is continuing to stack up.

Well to be fair a decent chunk of AOS still uses old fantasy minis to in effect proxy for their game and some of them have only just been replaced with new ones to coincide with Old World such as Cities of Sigmar to avoid cross sales. When fantasy was destroyed the first “AOS” minis were all ex fantasy and it has taken years for that to change.
Personally I wish the success of both games even if I never really got into AOS as its own game…I just still bought the ex fantasy minis that AOS kept using. Some of the AOS lore looks decent like the flesh eater courts, very interesting concept. A bit similar to the Malkavian vampires from Vampire Masquerade in a way as they all suffer from madness and yet don’t generally know they are mad
