  • Written in 1854, “Hard Times Come Again No More” is an American parlor song written by Stephen Foster, who wrote over 300 songs including “Camptown Races” and “Oh, Susanna”.
The song suggests not only financial hardships, but the physical and spiritual hardships that come along with it. It was parodied in the Civil War as a complaint about the food - “Hard Tack Come Again No More”.
The song has been recorded by Dolly Parton, Mavis Staples, The Proclaimers, Mary J. Blige, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, and Johnny Cash - just to name a few.
