Love how Justin just stares out the window whenever he is done talking HAHA
I love how Justin pointed out that the average person in Singapore is more well off than the average person in UK. Singaporeans don’t realise how lucky they are....
especially billionaires they are living the high lifestyle of many envy also not forgetting the low income earning groups
She said that the westerners normally move out when they started working and rent is a large percentage of their expenditure, due to high cost of living. if every working singaporean who are single live by themselves and rent a room/apartment, then we will not be so well off. Nothing to do with how "lucky" we are in sg, but our social norms give us this advantage in this case.
In Scotland, people only ever eat sandwiches, crisps, and rolls for lunch. Sometimes they spice it up and add soup. Lunch is not a big deal here and it's horrifying for me because I NEVER MISS LUNCH AS A MALAYSIAN! Lunch is a big deal!!! 😂😂😂
P.S. Loved the video Georgia!
JomWithSamad haha soo true
Hearing the perspectives of a local about their culture/traditions/misconceptions etc is always interesting and refreshing. Before we took our GCE O levels, I remember my teacher said " There are native english-speaking students who fail their O level English"...you know like a D7. True?
Yes it’s true haha
@@GeorgiaCaney Really? Don't Brits have a huge advantage with English being their mother tongue??
@@kimlt9923 No offence to Canadians, but I have noticed that Canadian university students can't write as well as their Singaporean counterparts. They tend to write as though they are speaking. It all boils down to the education system even if you are a native English speaker.
Oh gosh this is SSSOOOOOO INTERESTING. please do more of this! It's very insightful not just for the local but for everyone in the whole world as well!
Aw glad you enjoyed it!😊
You both are great ambassadors for the UK!
Yes, so candid and unassuming....are most Brits generally like that?
Maybe next time both of you can make a video on justin's progress in his malay lesson!
He’s getting pretty good you know! 👀
both of you should try taking the infamous psle math paper, that would be interesting 🤪
I wouldn’t be able to pass the first question but we should get Justin to try for sure haha
it may be difficult for primary school students and adults who forget everything upon graduation but it would be a walk in the park for justin. he doesn't need to know the way primary school students are taught to solve, all the questions can be solved using methods taught in high school.
I did that paper and it was..interesting
I was attracted to British culture in middle school due to its music scene, so were lots of my friends. Drum and bass >>>>>>> EDM
In my experience about the complaining that both Brits and Singaporeans can complain a lot but with Brits (as well as Dutch people like me) you Will notice it sooner because they make it very clear. With Singaporeans it often is more an ‘internal complaint’ because culturally it is not done to voice your negative opinions out loud. I think that if we would mix both ways of expressing complaints we would have the perfect balance.
And being keyword warriors
15:45 Oh my goodness, YES. That's a pet peeve of mine. BAKED BEANS MUST BE HEATED. Thankfully, growing up, most of the western food stalls near my HDB block had the baked beans heated. Or maybe they had them stored in a tub near the grill/stove haha.
Yesss haha
The "Bad Teeth" thing comes from US soldiers who were stationed in the UK during World War II. The state of British teeth in general at the time was terrible compared with Americans, and the generalisation stuck.
Well done, very honest and candid replies. Keep them videos comin'
was interesting the way you said being in Singapore was like a warm blanket around your body.. the cold in Heathrow is a shock if having not experienced it in a long time when first arriving in the UK..
I used to work as a dental hygienist at a dental clinic with quite a lot of expat patients. I have got to say, most westerners (at least those that I met) pay more attention to dental health then Singaporeans, like going for regular check ups. Not all the expats I saw were from the UK though. And most westerners would know what a dental hygienist as compared to Singaporeans.
From what I am hearing at school ( secondary in London ) Chav is actually making a comeback for the 20s!
i watched a lot of british comedies - which is really funny but really sarcastic, I can't imagine such humor in sg/asia context.
omg i feel so cheated ive had cold baked beans all my life and hated it LOL
Omg get those beans in a saucepan ASAP haha
@@GeorgiaCaney a friggin saucepan? Just stick them in the microwave...
I’m a Malaysian and newly moved to Singapore. It’s nice watching your videos. You lot remind me of my Brtiish friends back when I was studying there. Missing my time there. Tc x
Love you guys and your take on life. Very unbiased and fair especially considering how young you are and how wise you are. Keep the vids coming
Aw thanks so much ☺️
Hey G & J, How can you not love the Queen?? As a Brit I would say that 70% + of Brits do have very warm feelings towards the Queen. Maybe not so much for Prince Harry/Meghan right now but definitely lots of love for William and Kate!!
That laugh at 15:15 is so cute and for some reason, very British.
Loved this video.
I must admit, I too had some misconceptions, especially the ones about most Brits living in cottages and the population being well off in general.
On a side note, can we have Justin do a tutorial on how he snaps his fingers?
Hey Georgia, If you're looking for ideas on videos to create during lockdown, I'd be interested to hear an in-depth discussion on how banking/money/credit-cards works in Singapore. E.g. Whats the best bank to go with as an expat, whats the best credit card and any differences in general from the UK. Hope you guys are staying sane!
I'm very keen to know how you maintain such a high standard of living in Singapore :) Hope to hear from you.
I had a british colleague in 93- 96, he loves spore food assortment and the language culture and he complants food back home is "sianz" and the sky is gloomy rainy most of the time
The thing about accent is true for Singapore too.
There are many accents here. Those who speak in a more Singlish or ethnic influenced accnet and intonation usually come from pooree backgrounds.
Whereas those who speak better English (and more internationally recognisable) are more middle or upper class
This is a fun video to watch. Didn't know Plymouth is pronounced the way it is. I would have said ply as in plywood and mouth as in mouth. Yes baked beans should be served warm.
I enjoyed this video, please do another similar one (:
Yay :)
Really enjoyed this episode about British culture. Great content!
Thank you!
I posted that question bout drum n bass and i love it, garage, grime, etc wayy more than edm here! i keep hearing it in british shows and movies. it's such a unique sound! : D
It’s was a nice n fun episode from you guys.Enjoy very much.🌤🌤🌤
No one:
Not a single soul:
Justin:"You got Cs for GCSEs and A levels? Don't worry, come come come! We'll have space for you since you got $!"
Commuting in and around Essex into London on a daily basis (before lockdown) and sorry to correct you Justin but absolutely no conversation from anyone on their daily commutes! Everyone glued to their phones 😂📱
To be fair justin will strike up conversation with anyone haha, but that’s such a shame :( I guess phone culture has definitely changed in the last six years since we lived there!
Yep definitely, I suppose it also depends what train you're on. The trains with the bar/counter service and tins of Becks, Stella and Ghost Ship IPA do tend to be the ones that strangers strike more conversations on... must be a correlation there 😄
You and Justin should watch money heist on netflix. It’s similar to death note which I think you’ve seen before !
I’ve heard much about how the GCSEs differ significantly in Singapore and in the UK 🤣 would be crazy if there could b a comparison of some sort done LOL
Brits love indian and chinese is a luxury. I was surpised when they had curry with their chips (we call it fries) but thinking about it, its like us having potato in curry anyway, just made differently!
I saw someone that looked like Justin even with the hair colour and beard, I'm not sure if its him or not, but we bumped to each other in the mrt and he cursed at me with a Singapore accent
Came to the channel to watch Justin
thank you for clearing the wrong perception that those in Singapore are earning much lesser than the rest of the world
Excellent video, and very revealing; as much about the questions as the answers.
I grew up in the 50s & 60s so I’ve seen some changes. On music, while the music I knew as a teenager was great, you can’t keep listening to the same music for 50 or 60 years, so I’ve tried to find new stuff. I never got into Urban/Grime, etc, but I have loved EDM, especially Trance, since I heard it about 20 years ago. Currently loving Rina Sawayama’s new album (different again). Do Brits know much about Asian culture? Well, is there an Asian culture? I’d probably agree that not many Brits know much about East Asian culture(s), but I reckon we’re pretty familiar with the various cultures of South Asia.
Asian culture? Well, there's Chinese culture, Malay culture, Korean culture, Japanese culture, etc - all unique in themselves but perhaps share some overlapping similarities... just like European culture?
Kim LT Absolutely - I get all that. The impression I got from the question was that there was a single Asian culture (possibly Chinese?) and whether or not Brits were familiar with that. I was responding with the view, which I probably didn’t express very well, that Asia is so vast, with so many different peoples and faiths, that there isn’t a single, or even predominant, Asian culture. And to support that I mentioned the cultures of South Asia - e.g. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh - which are very different from the cultures of East Asia; and that typical Brits would have different degrees of familiarity with those various Asian cultures. Certainly I wasn’t familiar with Chinese culture but I did have some familiarity with Indian and Pakistani culture, for example.
Do u cook? Maybe u can do a cooking video of your childhood food
make some fish n chips! :D
Complain about the wevver, Bruv!
Cut it out!
Thanks for sharing! I didn't expect there are so many facts I don't know
It is an interesting topic what you talk about. I enjoyed viewing.
Thanks for watching!
Ah... I really miss the fish and chips with salt and vinegar! Ah... the chips and beans too! If I remembered correctly, they were rather affordable at £1.99 and £0.99 respectively. A good meal for a poor student on a tight budget.
So goood 🤤🤤
Just watched this with my boyfriend and it was so interesting to see if we agreed about these assumptions as well😂 because he moved to the UK 6 years ago where as I have lived here my whole life! X
Ah that’s so cool ☺️
I can't live without English Breakfast Tea (I don't add cream and sugar though), I love Baked Beans and Toast, hate cold beans though haha I really like British culture and I love the accent, I wish I could speak like that, I've seen videos and photos of the countrysides and I wish I could live in the UK 🥺
Aw love that haha
great video!- oh i do miss the pubs and parks . and the constant yammer of gloomy weather. haha!
The only British food I like, fish and chips. haha
you should try dining at pazzion cafe @ jewel after the CB! their hot baked beans are ABSOLUTELY delicious and made from scratch! not those canned shit that most cafes served. the price they charge for the meals aren't overly expensive too! check out their menu online!
Have u seen the British comedy mind your language back in the day?
I find that cold baked beans' texture is a little more hardy compared to hot baked beans. Hot baked beans can sometimes be a little too mushy for my liking.
The sauce is thinner when heated, but it's worth it.
Hello Georgia hello Justin honestly my favourite tea is english earl grey tea but sorry i still prefer coffee! I only drink tea like once in a while means once in a 3 months or 4 months.
Talking about British food, have you had jellied eels?
noo haha have you?
omg it looks so nasty hahahahaha
@@GeorgiaCaney No I have not. I planned to visit London in May this year but had to cancel it unfortunately. I would like to try it once.
Toby Teng I would imagine it wouldn’t taste like Japanese unagi! haha
I enjoy British humours, more witty and subtle.
Kissing on the cheek is a continental Europe thing, as far as I know. The UK rule of thumb is a handshake. Great video. Enjoyed it
Yes we forgot the handshake part!😝
I've heard that Brits are awesome gardeners
Haha I think a lot are yes!
I'm so shocked by the baked beans part....I hate them coz they're cold and slimy served at many places. Why doesnt anyone heat them up here?
Do English people follow table manners when having lunch or dinner even at home? Is it ok to hold fried chicken drumstick by hand and eat at home while dinning with family members?
Yes it’s fine haha I guess it depends on your upbringing though!
Now i m worried to study in plymouth if i every get to go because of this situation. I will miss the sun every though it is so hot here.
honestly its pretty relentless lol...
Then 3 years will be hard😭
How is it like taking national exams (O-level & A-level) in the UK compare to SG.
TheEpicProduction you guys should try sg o level 10 year series and do a comparison between UK o levels
TheEpicProduction you should check out Evan Edinger videos, he’s an American in the UK and he does a lot of the UK test papers for fun! :)
I have read somewhere (probably Quora) that the UK ones are much easier than the SG ones.
I enjoy hot baked beans too! I think most eateries just serve them cold because it means less work for them and it’s still edible :(
Singapore had a courtesy movement started in the 70s' why are Singaporean also having a gloomy face it's bcs of our upbringing and society taught us how we should grow up to be can we be friendly
yes we could but it all depends on the person
You can try to tell the kitchen to warm the baked beans next time. :D I love hot baked beans too but being "chim-chai" (casual intention), I just make do with it.
I want to try Blood Pudding
I feel like people here are kind of awkward or put off by striking up conversations with random people because the concept of 'stranger danger' is constantly drilled into our minds. It's just that concept which has made us kind of(?) fearful to speak to random strangers
yeah definitely the "stranger danger" culture in a random outdoor setting, BUT i think in an internal space, we can open and chatty especially to tourists and foreigners. Depends on the setting.
We are from Plymouth and it is raining right now!!!!!
Haha I’m not shocked one bit 😛
Its funny peoples perceptions of weather / climate and statistical reality . Almost everywhere in UK only 1 day in 3 has any rain in it on average - and of course that 1 day it generally rains only a short fraction of the day not necessarily allday. Days where it rains all day are rare. I reckon if you would step outside your house at random only one time in a hundred would you find it raining.
Sunshine varies a lot from only 20% in some places to nearly half the time in the sunnier spots.
Haha too right nice video my broski
British food is delicious. Indian food is delicious. I love all food 😍
Great video!
Did the both of you found any GOOD/NICE FISH & CHIPS in singapore? Personally im wary of singapore's fish and chips and ended up not ordering any because past experiences were not the best, born and raised in singapore but i gave up on that dish.
On the side note: Super interested in the topic of middle lower high class experiences/stories you have in Britain! Would you ever do a video on something similar?
The closest you can get to UK fish n chips in Singapore is Smiths along Bukit Timah Rd. Singapore's hawker centres, restaurants, seem to use french fries rather than chips. In UK, Chinese & Indian takeways are just as popular as Fish n Chips.
UK is very tribal, collectively not individually. North hates the south, south hates the north. Scots & Welsh hate the English. Liverpool hates Manchester n vice versa. Newcastle hates Sunderland n vice versa. And it is the same with other cities throughout the UK.
You can be stereotyped just by where you come from. For example. If you are from Yorkshire or Scotland you are supposed to be mean with your money, which by my experience is not the case. If you are from Liverpool you are a thief, again totally wrong.
Is the class divide more prominent in UK than in Singapore, or you notice any class divide in Singapore?
you look gorgeous today!!
Oh thank you!
a question that no one asked probably: are Brits very tolerant towards foreigners? I will be studying in the UK next year and I'm from Poland. many ppl told me Brits usually like to isolate themselves and they come off as cold and dry when it comes to building a relation with them
and i will be studying VFX at NTU so I hope my decision is not one of these senseless ones that you mentioned haha 😅
It depends on where you study I guess but in Scotland, people are pretty welcoming to everyone. I've had experiences in Liverpool, London and Manchester where people were being racist towards me but I can only assume they're a minority of sour apples. Most of the time, everyone is cool! 🙂
@@joanna.pytelx It actually depends on the individual. I'm from Singapore and when i was travelling with my parents in Switzerland last year, we met an older british couple from Leeds on the train. They were the sweetest people we met during the entire trip to switzerland and prague. i think in every society, even here in singapore, there are a few bad apples. Don't judge a certain group of people based on someone else's experience.
@@foodngems what experiences did u have
Hi Georgia & Justin, do you listen to Shakatak's "Livin In The UK" & "Night Birds"?
i've been to London 3 times (3rd may 2019) almost Brits not helpful when u get lose direction (as tourist), hotel rates more expensive than south east Asia, for Life obviously better in Asia
10:05 what jobs in uk finish at 4:30? At the lower end if the job market its pretty non stop
Part 2 plssss
Just curious - I've noticed Justin doing that hand gesture before (15:57) in your earlier videos. Is it a British thing? What does it signify? Thanks for clarifying.
Haha it’s just means something good :)
We have the equivalent of chavs here in Australia and they are called bogan.
What is the name of the music you use at the end of the videos? I love it xx
I love American humour I find them hilarious but British humour is in a league of their own. They crack me up. Hello monty python. Little Britain. Classic.
I'm quite shocked there are still some ignorant ones who think everyone in the UK is rich.
when they actually live there and see how often people travel abroad compared to singaporeans. And also how often people eat out they are sure to get a culture shock. I'm sure many European expats would have had a culture shock when they came to Singapore too and see how people buy take away nearly every single day during this 'circuit breaker' period.
In poland the british tea is to strong..we have lighter one...and we aren, t accustomed ..and there is too much sugar in a bread.
How about blood and kidney or eel pies?
Why isn't Hotel Management a valid course? It's a business degree.
I had no idea that baked beans needed to be hot. When I buy baked beans, it comes in a can from a supermarket & when I get home, I just open the can and eat them, either straight out of the can, or after pouring them into a bowl or onto my plate. I had no idea they had to be heated up or cooked first. O. M. G. Really?? Maybe there are others who also don't know this, so maybe that's why you don't get hot baked beans here.
Eeeeee haha sounds awful. 🙈 Your life is about to change!
@@GeorgiaCaney So do I just heat them up, or do I have to add anything else to them?
Do British people love Scones and eat them regularly?
If M&S is tier one, where does Fortnum & Mason stand? 😆
have you guys ever visited the british club in Singapore?
I have actually!
May I know how do you pronounce the word "scone" please? And do you put on the cream first or the jam first?
Hi Guys, chanced upon your vlogs and found them insightful & hilarious....just to add on to your sharing.....Brits love tea breaks and have a good natter; they also like to complain about the traffic+endless road works+what was on the telly the night before (in addition to the weather); eat strange (but some say delicious) food like mushy peas, fish fingers, black pudding; work life balance is sacred - especially POETS day; sarcastic, self-deprecating comedy (piss taking) is very much the essence of British culture e.g. Harry Enfield, Monty python; class system is latent but some people like to judge someone’s background (unfairly) based on their accents e.g. Essex. OK, enough from me time for that cup of tetleys and some digestives......
yeh im in love with brit humors, never like lame american jokes... in comparison with a film like human traffic vs hungover lol.. definitely human traffic!
Haha that’s not to say Americans don’t have a great sense of humour because they definitely can, it’s just quite different!
Complaining is a 1st world problem becos 1st world people are not contended anymore.
No country is perfect and no gov is perfect. Every country tends to have people makeing ends meet pay check to pay check. The gov can help but only to certain extend and individual has to help themselves too.
As long the gov is doing their best to help the people in the country I think the gov is good enough.
Why is hotel management a crazy course? :(
Do most brits support their local premier league club?
Kong Leong Yip some do some dont
I’m a singaporean who hates edm and enjoys grime lol
