You did the right thing there, that sort of collection usually ends up in a charity shop,& mostly binned if the records are wrecked or the sleeves mould damaged.
Good call, Jack! To a lesser degree, I've had that same epiphany: time to slow down the buying at times, and sit back in my music room and remember to enjoy what I already have. That's what it's all about. Beggars Banquet, a timeless listen. 😎🎶
Very interesting and certainly a video I can relate to , you definitely made the correct decision to leave empty-handed Jack. I suppose it comes down to just how much the lady wanted for the collection... but like you say it is an awful lot of time and effort to sort through a collection of that size. The joy of vinyl hunting whether for business or pleasure has its ups and downs , and I've had many highs ( equally many lows ) , and it's the not knowing when you turn up just how it's going to pan out. But I learnt so much from experiences such as this... Fantastic video Jack. 😍🎵🎵🤘
Many thanks Peter, it’s definitely the not knowing what’s there that I love about it. The thrill of the chase. Being ready to walk away from a collection is a must though. The next one is just around the corner anyway! Cheers, Jack
Well said Jack. It's so easy to lose sight of why we do this. Yes there's a lot of fun to be had collecting vinyl. But it can take over your life. And if you're not listening to the records you buy then what is the point. Every cloud has a silver lining, even a garage full of unplayable records. Cheers Mike
Definitely! As you know Mark, it’s all about the music. Might give BB another spin today, Jigsaw Puzzle, Stray Cat Blues and Sympathy are some of my fav RS songs. Factory Girl too. Cheers for watching pal!
Absolutely agree with your decision. Not to worry though mate. There will be another amazing collection coming your way right around the corner. Have a dram for me while you listen to that stone cold classic. Cheers.
Fingers crossed, Jack 🤞 I was good and stayed off the bevvy… always like to have a wee break for a while. Still enjoyed BB though… as you say, a stone cold classic!
Think you’re right. I’m picky when it comes to buying second hand from a shop, but will put up with a few pops and clicks when buying in the wild. These were a lot worse than that though.
Glad you realised that most of it was trashed before you handed over the cash. I feel bad for the person who doesn't have your smarts and ends up with a lot of great records that sound like shit. If I buy less that may cost a bit more, but are in excellent condition I'm going to spend more time listening. It's one of the big reasons I don't look in thrift shops or look for that one in a million $1 grail, because I hate cleaning records and the time it consumes when I could be rockin' out to stuff that sounds great because it's in ripper condition. On a positive note at least you got out of the house for a bit 😂
I think it’s about hitting that sweet spot between well priced and decent condition. I quite like cleaning records with some tunes on, but hundreds upon hundreds is a bit much. Especially knowing they’re gonna sound shite no matter how much I clean. Being prepared to walk away is about the most important thing to do when viewing collections though. The drive was nice … I need a new mix for the car though… listened to that one for months!
Glad you've come to your senses. I do the odd record fair to enjoy it, socialise and trade or make a bit of pocket money but ultimately some dealers just turn bad and obsessed about all the wrong things. At least it was a therapeutic scenic journey. There is everyone out there saying ooooh alot of money in records and they are coming back (like yeah 15 years later) 95% need to go to landfill.
😂 You’re not wrong! Definitely not about making money for me… more about earning record tokens to get albums for my own collection. It’s got to be about the music for me… rather than getting obsessed about the wrong things.
Oh, Jack! How disappointing that the records weren’t up to standard, but I have to say I really enjoyed the epiphany you shared right at the end of the vid. Very well said, indeed 😊👍🏻 Best wishes, Christian
Thanks Christian, it woulda been a hard sell with that lot. A shame to see so many great albums in poor condition, but I suppose records were handled differently back in the 60s and 70s. Cheers for watching pal, Jack
@@TheVinylVoyage-ud3uf When I saw some of the titles, I was so excited for you! It is a great shame that they hadn’t been taken good care of by that particular owner, but I’ll keep everything crossed for you for the next time you go on one of your trips that you find some treasure, mate! 🤞🏻
Aww gutting for you..but you absolutely made the right call. Buying records from private collections can be a frustrating affair, i've had everything from dreadful titles to lousy condition to them even deciding they don't want to sell them anymore!!.( that irked me the most). There's always the next time...
Exactly! There’s always another one around the corner. I’ve had that too when they decide they don’t want to sell… luckily on that occasion I hadn’t travelled far. Cheers for watching pal!
What a shame! The first part of your video with the flicking through the bags looked promising and the driving footage built up the expectation. I’ve got a collection to view belonging to a fella who used to work for RCA. Fingers crossed...
Oooo that sounds like a very promising collection, John! Fingers crossed for you there. This one went from fairly low expectation, to high, to low, to being pissed off … to rethinking why I’m chasing records in the first place. Looking forward to some Teaser and the Firecat this morning. Easy food for the soul. Cheers, Jack
Bad luck Jack. It always amazes me how people seem unable to at least to do a quick visual inspection. You don't need to know anything about records or music to know that scratches, scuffs and torn sleeves will not be attractive to buyers.
Can’t win them all, James! The first ten I looked at were very poor, so I checked a bit more and so on. Real pity. I always check and usual stop after about 10 when the condition is good. After that I just check the big finds. Cheers, Jack
Funny as your were flicking thru those records I was thinking “oh dear poor condition!” And I think you made the right decision not to pursue - how much did she want for the collection?
She never stated a price… it was offers. She didn’t have much idea of value and think she was basing her evaluation off of EBay prices. I think she was hoping for a big payday, but wasn’t really considering the condition of the records.
How much were you willing to spend? I understand why you didn’t make an offer. I personally wouldn’t want to acquire a load of landfill, but maybe would have made a lowball offer. You never know what may happen.
Good question, Walter! Honest answer is, I don’t know. I’m not sure I’d have had the money to buy the collection if it’d had been all mint condition. There was still a fair bit of dross in their too. Big band, 80s, classical. I wasn’t fussed about a low offer as the lady had lots of other buyers lined up, also, I had the impression she had high hopes of a big sale. Cheers for watching, Jack
Gubbed....not heard that one since Rab C Nesbit was on tv . Shame about the records condition, lots of great titles/bands but i suppose you've just got to say no and be realistic about things etc...
Love that! Bringing it back to what matters - the music. Good on ya!
Definitely! All about the tunes! Cheers for watching, Jack
You did the right thing there, that sort of collection usually ends up in a charity shop,& mostly binned if the records are wrecked or the sleeves mould damaged.
Definitely Jonathan! No mold, but lots of ripped sleeves and badly scratched records. The albums were really great. A real shame! Cheers, Jack
Turned out well in the end Jack, as far as re-connecting with your music...thanks for sharing
Cheers for watching, Dale! It’s all about the music pal!

Love me some Beggars Banquet 😊 Good man. And the scenery, lovely!
Hadn’t listen to it for a wee while, but definitely in my top 5 Stones albums. Cheers, Morten

'gubbed' should definitely be included in the grading scale
😂 I think ‘gubbed’ comes just above ‘shagged’ on my grading scale
As the older i get the more picker i get on used records. You made the right decision.

Good for you. A man should know his limitations. Especially when collecting someone else's records. Cheers!
I’d hit my limit there. Thanks for watching, Jack
A very very good short video that hits - I've just buried a friend and I've been thinking your thoughts lately - excellent words. Cheers

I’ll live to dig another day, Brian!
The first step is admitting we have a problem… the second step is walking away from shite condition records
😂 So true! Cheers for watching pal!
That’s a tough call Jack, but the right one. You would have wasted hours fiddling around will crappy records 😵💫
100%! I’d have been drowning in the stuff!
thought right away ...condition shit
You were right 👍
Well, at least you had a leisurely drive through the countryside Jack! Too bad the records were in such terrible condition.
Yep, just wrecked... bit of a drive and some good tunes on the stereo though. It's all good! Cheers for watching Mike!
