    One of my favorite scales for rock lead playing and creating harmonized melodies is minor hexatonic.
    As the name implies, it’s a six-note scale, and it is theoretically formed by adding the three notes of a minor triad to the three notes of a major triad rooted one whole step below.
    For example, combining E minor (E G B) and D major (D F# A) gives you E minor hexatonic (E F# G A B D). The scale has a dark, serious quality that is intriguing and effective for creating a pensive musical mood.
    This month, I’d like to show you some cool things you can do with the minor hexatonic scale, which we will then use as a reference point in subsequent columns for exploring other differently shaded but equally appealing hexatonics.

    I started playing guitar in 1977. Vai, Jason Becker, Vernon Reid, & Setzer have all championed my work. .. then I became 100% disabled. I cannot play but I still study and picture the fretboard every night, figuring out new chord voicings, positions, modes, etc.
    The fretboard is the gift that keeps on giving. Studying the fretboard 40 years and I'm STILL blown away at everything the us to discover!
    Jimmy's Guitar World lessons and DVDS are fantastic. He's brilliant for beginners and advanced players. He has a way of explaining difficult info in an easy to understand way.
    Thanks for posting this vid.

    Pleasure to know Jimmy personally, my mom's boyfriend is his old friend. Went to see him live with his son a few months back at a bar in an acoustic setting and I was blown away by the amount of songs they do. They have a MASSIVE binder full of songs and just about anything you request they know. I requested Long Distance Runaround by Yes and even though they didn't know it they improved it almost perfectly. He gave me some great advice for my band too. Great guy and a phenomenal musician.

    The idea seems like a bebop scale, but without sixth or major seventh. The minor seventh (D) is a passing tone for the root (E), The second (F#) is a passing tone for the minor third (G), and the fourth (A) is a passing tone for the fifth (B). Basically, it's an E-minor triad with passing tones, like how the E-minor bebop spells out a minor 7th chord with dorian passing tones. That's...actually really useful. I could see that being very useful for playing over more complex rock changes. That's an amazingly useful idea!

    This was pretty spiffy. Especially the Gilmouresque part. I've been playing on and off since 89'. I'm one of those people who a lot of the time plays (and composes) and doesn't know the notes or chords I'm playing. I feel compelled to say instead MOST of the time instead of ALOT of the time if I'm going to be totally accurate. :-0 I'm working on absorbing as much as I need/want in my way and at my pace.

      learn enough to get your point across, not enough sometimes you get lucky like Floyd did
      Gilmore concentrates on bends go any slower end back in time? Floyd used too be 'one note' wonder
      songs one key.. Carefull with that axe engine eugene' was called the (One note song)' Because its slow weird Floyds way of doing things wrong backwards (secrete saucers)
      Roger is tone deaf.., flying a
      helicopter to the show Spitting at his audience was cool..
      .. Rick wright tuned rogers bass cause he's an architect. deaf dumb n blind ha! Syd was great Floyd .. bastards think their better than everybody Pompeii is monstrosity Don't play Frisbee in back either,, nick mason dosent like it mentioned in newspaper bout his audience,, Nick mason will ignore a perfectly good question respond with own goble goble gibberish,, Laughin I swear trip!!

    Interesting. If you play it from the Gmaj side you are adding the #7. From the minor side it will work on min, min7 even min(maj7) without having to deal with touching the 7th. Cool stuff man!!!!

    So, natural minor without the 6th? Doesn't sound like an interesting scale to me...What about more interesting hexatonic scales like the augmented scale?

    • @PrashantSamlal
      @PrashantSamlal 9 лет назад

      to me it does. sounds like a nice scale to use for rock guitarists.

      It's not that I think it's a bad scale. I think rock guitarists should actually learn all forms of the minor scale and then subtract notes rather than adding notes to a pentatonic scale.
      Plus, most jazz guitarists recognize a hexatonic scale as being either an augmented or whole-tone diminished scale. So, I feel like this video is a bit of a lead-on.

    • @PrashantSamlal
      @PrashantSamlal 9 лет назад

      I don't think rock players need to know that many scales. Nothing wrong with a pentatonic scale , and I think particular scale has a nice rock sound aswell
      Also the title says 'E minor hexatonic' so I don't understand why anyone would think of a whole tone or aug scale.

      As for rock guitarist, you need to learn 30 yr old songs first. You'll learn composition fast along with scales half the time. Then if you choose to be a rock guitar player there is a world of players out waiting to share.
      If you want to be metal, crank it, find a screams, wear makeup and let me buy your setup a 1/4 price in 2 years. Metal guitar is just a hard any other type.
