There should be a mod to balance weapons around their calibers not their "weapon tiers".

@@okroon6777 Because it weighs a ton in a game where weight management is key. How many times have I picked up loot and realised that I wasted space on a machine gun that I never need. I mean how many Chimeras are there? I encountered 3. In 100 hours of game time. And those 3, I killed with the weapons I had.
I actually LIKE(!) the machine gun. I really do! And I WANTED to use it. But I constantly found my self in a situation where I simply had better choices available with the assault rifles and shotguns. Particularly as amunition for the MG is really hard to come by.

Full power 7.62x54 out of a long barelled GPMG should have superb penetration & damage but oh well, it is what it is. Decent if not stellar weapon held back by poor handling & currently limited availability ammo.
On another note, having so many high-tier weapons & add-ons behind the point of no return is a real shame, especially since the game offers no possibility of free-roaming after the end of the story. If it did then that would make sense as a bit of a reward for completing the main quest line. Hopefully post-story free roam is also something that can be added to the game at some point.

@@R5RGP If you look at the model in game when you reload (at least the Glutton - I don't have the base RPM), the ammo can actually says 7.62x54. The cartridges also look more like 7.62x54R than x39, as they have that rim around the base.
So why is it x39 in game, and why is it called the RPM?
My theory; at Slag Heap, just behind Boozer's bar, you can see an RPD, which was an actual 7.62x39mm light machinegun. I think maybe they planned on adding it, but it was cut somewhere in development? And then the PKM was kept, probably being further on in development with regards to animations and stuff. And it was made 7.62x39 because otherwise the PKM would share ammo with the sniper rifles, making either sniper ammo too common or PKM ammo too rare.

These videos inspire me to test things just in case, like what happens if you switch ammo type mid magazine (spoiler - ammo in the chamber magically transforms into the ammo type you've switched to)
So, I've tested the resistance mods on RPM74 and they are bugged.
For ease of explanation N will be no upgrades, WT will be just Wear and Tear, while ESWT - External Sources Wear and Tear.
Test consists from 20 dives into shock anomaly per gun, on Veteran difficulty, each zap I made sure that I hold the weapon in neutral position:
    - N lost 14% durability, finishing with 86%
    - WT durability dropped to 88%,
    - ESWT variant durability went down to 86%.
OK... Test two - shooting whole 150 rounds from all three guns:
    - N went down to 91%
    - WT durability went down to 91%
    - ESWT ended up at - 93%
In conclusion, particularly in case with RPM74, ESWT and WT effects are swapped. So for the time being it's best to get ESWT, until it's fixed.
For other guns, except Kharod (its ammo conversion definitely reduces durability loss from shooting, although it claims to be ESWT), ESWT and WT seem to work properly (I only tested a few WT and ESWT against results from un-upgraded guns)

      - Once you kill them all: all guards will respawn at the gates as soon as your not looking at them and forget about you ever shooting them
      - Base will remain in lock down until you go to a different outpost and back
I after you kill them the third time though they seem to attack you spontaneously sometimes though

I have the Glutton, but never use it. It holds 500 rounds, and weighs over 13Kg fully loaded. But unless you're running an ammo mod, have fun keeping it fully loaded!! I'm pushing 300 hours in this great game, and so far I've found guns like the RPM-74 to be overly heavy, wasteful of ammo, and easily out-shined by laughably smaller, cheaper, lighter, more portable guns, like the ZUBR-19. Sounds crazy to say, but having experienced all the guns, the ZUBR goes out with me on EVERY run, while big boys like the Glutton sit in storage.

A PKM chambered for 7.62x39 could manage to be lighter than a standard PKM. Say, a weight comparable to the RPD (btw, I've heard there's an RPD in the game files, so why they went with a rechambered PKM is beyond my comprehension). "LMG" is correct nomenclature due to the calibers of all belt-fed guns in-game being 5.45 and 7.62x39, whereas a regular PKM in 7.62x54R would be a "medium" or "general-purpose" machine gun. Those lighter calibers would actually be handier for Zone use anyway (especially considering the cumbersome nature of belted ammo), so I'm not averse to intermediate calibers being used in the game's belt-fed guns. I just wish they'd gotten more creative with it and paid more attention to details. Like, at the very least, the gun should be smaller and lighter since it uses a small and lighter caliber compared to a regular PKM. Also, regardless of weight, a PKM in either 5.45 or 7.62x39 would have very controllable recoil and muzzle-jump, especially if it had the same weight and mass up front as a regular PKM in 7.62x54R. If baffles my boggle how it's possible to overlook these details, thereby insulting the player's intelligence.
Note: Since all belt-fed machine guns fire from the open bolt, doing a tactical reload wouldn't actually result in a +1 capacity. Right? By all means, correct me if I'm wrong. Also, PK-series machine guns have shown up in the Zone since as far back as some older versions of Oblivion Lost, maybe even before that. Oblivion Lost 2.2 had a ye olde PK. You could it was a PK and not a PKM by the fluted barrel. Anomaly has both an RPD and a PKM, as well as a PKP and an M249 SAW, plus you can spawn an M-60 by typing "wpn_m60" into the weapon spawner.

The PKM can actually have a +1 “in the chamber”. While the round isn’t actually in the chamber, and the PKM is an open bolt weapon, due to how the PKM functions differently than other GPMGs, it can have an extra bullet ready to fire.
Unlike other belt fed machine guns, the PKM removes the bullet from the belt by pulling it reward, during the rearward motion of the bolt. After the bolt is to the rear, there is a bullet being held in front of the chamber waiting for the bolt to be released forward, yet also not in the belt, resulting in a “+1”.
I do wonder if the stalker devs even knew about this though, and if it was just a lucky oversight.

I've been using the Glutton version and it's become my favourite weapon. Always hated it in previous Stalkers, hard to come by, ammo very rare, etc. But... This time, I'm using a cheat :) ArtMoney SE, very old program, taps into any running application and scans RAM for particular values, then you filter while changing the value until only one remains... That way, I'm getting infinite credits and for this gun, I opted for infinite ammo. I run it with 300 rounds in the mag and I freeze the value in ArtMoney, meaning I get infinite ammo until the next quickload. But I've been able to hoard 750-800 rounds, 250-300 AP and 150-200 HP, just from stashes. Not enough for the whole game, obviously.
