Correction: The cup is made of polystyrene which is significantly less dangerous than styrene, but decomposes to styrene when heated.
More info: In the microwave this decomposition is slow enough that you won’t notice it with your eyes because the water maintains the temperature at 212°F=100°C=373.15K (the boiling point of water), but it is enough to pose a real risk of cancer. Interestingly when heated significantly higher you can actually visibly see it turn into styrene vapor,* among other things which make it yellow to orange (if heated in a sealed container so it doesn’t burn), this could theoretically be used to recycle polystyrene but is not currently economically viable whatsoever due to the large cost of energy. It’s called polystyrene because it is made by polymerization of styrene, where one of the C=C bonds opens up (specifically the one that is not part of the 6 carbon ring): X + Y + C=C → X-C-C-Y (X and Y represent the rest of the polymer). The polymer is both less reactive and not fat soluble (and neither one is water soluble) so it is not hazardous unlike the monomer.
*If you would like to see this decomposition in action there are a few amateur chemists who have made videos on RUclips demonstrating it, I suggest not replicating this at home however

I’m really glad my mom is Japanese and showed me how to make the cups of ramen cause that 87¢ ramen hits different
fr, though normally im just lucky if we get noodle cups as since my mum is chinese, normally we just buy big packs of plain noodles and season it ourselves 🙂. Tho it shall never compare to the greatness of cheap noodle cups that I normally buy in like packs of 10 because Ik for a fact itll be a long time until we get more
