- Hello and welcome back! Episode 14 of my whole house DIY remodel features a modern makeover of the front entryway steps leading into my house. This was a challenging project but if you've ever wondered how to make steps using composite boards, aka Trex, this is a great beginner's guide and an honest opinion on when things don't always go according to plan. I go over how to avoid problems using concrete, trex, and other misc. tasks involved in the making of these entryway steps. Hope you enjoy the show!

Landscape fabric is for separating materials. It will not block weeds. This is outside. Outside is dirty. Dirt will get in the mulch, settle on the fabric, and weeds will start growing. The fine roots will grow in to the perforations of the fabric making them harder to remove. Because wood is less dense than soil, no separation is needed. If you had rock, you would need fabric to keep it from sinking.
Landscape fabric lets water through. This is next to the foundation where you do not want water. It is better to use something like poly sheeting under the mulch. It does not let water through. It also won't stop weeds, but it will stop water.
You should also check if you can take the sump line out through the curb. You could then bury the line.
Don’t give up. At least you are moving forward. Thx for sharing
They make a matching plug so you can hide the tapcon screws if you want.
It turned out nice.
The landscape fabric is called weed block. I hope you got the expensive stuff because the cheap stuff biodegrades faster and weeds get through. Also the reason you can’t find mulch in the fall is because it degrades quicker in the winter. That’s why landscaping companies refresh it in the spring time not the fall/winter months.
Ooooo got cha, that’s good to know!!
Omg your worse than me lol love the concrete technique 😂❤
Nice job one tip on making templates use 1/4 "plywòod strips about a 11/2" or luan its cheeper. And make to the lenght of you your rise and treads keep all treads strips flat to serface and hot glue the risers on top and presto you have a template to make your trim piece. We all learn by trial and error. Good job my friend.
Nice! I’ll try that out!
Lookin good homie! I was watching all your early videos like 6 months ago, Its awesome you started making videos again. Two things, first, any reason you didn’t just frame the front steps? Just build some stringers with treated lumber and then use the trex for the treads and risers. You can even buy trex fascia for the sides. Also, next time you use a new roller; after you open it, wrap the whole thing in painters tape, peel it off which will yank off all the fuzzies, then soak it in water and ring it out. It’ll roll paint on perfectly. Keep up the excellent work dude!
Thanks for the advice man, I’ll definitely keep that in mind. I would have built tradition steps if I had known how to LOL!
Choose foundation rubber paint next time. Looks good, make an update vid.
First to commet!
All of you have a good day
