Will Fresh Fuel and Additives Fix my Rough Running Classic Daily Driver?

  • After fixing a lot of small things my classic daily driver XJ6 is back on the road and ready for winter! However, it is running rough still. Is it just water and dirt in the carbs? Will fresh fuel and water removing additives fix the issue?

Adam, your brilliant video tutorials have enabled me to completely Overhaul my 1992 series 3 Daimler Double Six.
PLEASE can you point out and show us what those individual sensors and vacuum components are, and what symptoms are likely to develop if each one fails. I'm sure there are MANY confused people out there who are desperate to diagnose the faulte themselves.
I live in rural France and you are the best and only source of information for me!
    Thank you in anticipation.

Hand-waving hypothesis; water in the float bowls had frozen into ice, which reduced the effectiveness of the additives. As the car warmed up, the ice melted and started to flow out.

My guess is some water in the fuel. Additives should get that out, or drain float bowls and see if there are any globs of water in the bowls. Moisture in the distributor cap, a long shot but possible.
    Keep us posted!

I've a 6.0 XJR-S (pre-facelift) and it always runs like a dog when it has been left sitting for an extended period. It drives sweeter and sweeter over time when it goes back on the road, she just gets grumpy when you don't give her any attention. once everything is up to temp it responds really well to a few good hard accelerations, which is obviously awful for me but I have to just grin and bear it. 😂

Hi Adam maybe the additives just neede longer to do their work I hope in your next video all is resolved and good till the next time take care. Andy Allen.

Old cas are simple, you need a spark at the right time, you need sufficient fuel to burn and you need the correct compression. Check by elimination process and you will find the issue. My opinion on additives as a chemical engineer? They all are tested under normal environmental conditions. So making use of them in wintertime involves a different approach😊

It’s additives made to remove ice and water from carbs in the winter. So I think they’re very suitable to the environment

Hi Adam, thats great result hopefully it keeps running better and better! probably not worth it but it would great project if did an EFI conversion on this car or another XK engined car.

Are the SU carbs well synchronized also?
The diy mechanic's sigh of despair is always rewarded by a nice gratification, the satisfaction that the definitive fix is found and applied.
Keep the faith in your Jag. it starts well and has got a steady idle rpm.
It is a car honestly designed which is rare nowadays.
NB I would replace the SUs with Webers.

Not really. Any car wouldn’t run right with water in a carb

Sounds like old carbs needing a good cleanup. Of course, injector cleaner and such will help to some degree too!

Very frustrating Adam ! Very frustrating indeed ! It does seem to be fuel related and l did wonder if it was the supplier but on reflection it's fuel supply. .....l think ! 👿👿

I run regular gas in my XJ40 with absolutely not problem and I'm not alone doing it. Pretty sure this old girl would work fine too with regular gas.

I have a Chevy Suburban with an 8.1 litre engine, not really concerned with mileage. Also have a couple Jaguars, which is why I like your channel. I was mostly commenting about the cost of fuel in Sweden. Looks beautiful there where you live. Cheers, Doug @@LivingWithAClassic

@@alexandrecouture2462 I have a 2006 XJ8 that requires premium but it does get pretty good mileage. I don't drive it much.

Logically it would seem to be a fuel problem, hopefully skidding about and getting on and off the gas will mix up any water residues and let the new fuel and additives absorb and remove any contamination...

I'm wondering if you have water in the fuel tank as a result of the May car wash - the filler cap gaskets can leak if old. At -9c the water in the tank will be frozen but if it was me I would get the car in the garage above 0c for 24 hrs and loosen the drain cock on the tank to verify if there is water in there?

    • @LivingWithAClassic
      @LivingWithAClassic  7 месяцев назад

Check the previous video. Drained the tank and there was a very tiny amount of water in it

Look for a car that is solid....no rotten sills, floors etc....body work is expensive....mechanial work is much easier....you might pick up a car with seized engine etc...but stored dry will be an easy project..rather than trying to resurrect a rust bucket.....believe me I know these cars very very well....Best of luck !!!
