I do doordash and one time I delivered groceries to this million dollar home, it was beautiful but in the driveway there was two old cars. One 2002 Buick and one old Cadillac. A old lady answered the door and I complimented her on the home and she told me her and her husband bought the home 7 years ago. I joked around and said "with this nice home you have some nice cars too", and she told me they bought those cars when they were new and kept them since. After I talked with her for a bit she told me that Buick has over 370k miles and I didnt believe her until she showed me the gauge and it started like it was brand new, I ended up leaving that house with a whole new perspective on life.

Cool story bro. Seriously that’s the kind of stuff that gets you that mansion. I forgot who told me this I think it was my dad, people who have nice cars have cheap homes, people who have beater cars could very likely drive it back into their mansion. That’s why I love my tacoma and will keep it even after the wheels fall off

Lil old lady Buicks are gold. I had a sweet old lady who kept her husbands park avenue running like new and brought it in every 3k miles for an oil change. I would have been comfortable taking the used oil from that car and putting it in mine, still golden.

Were they white? I’ve noticed that a lot of white Americans generally do not care about the car they drive, they’ll have beautiful homes with an average car in the driveway, but minorities will usually spend a lot of money on cars, even when they really don’t have much money, they will buy a nice car to try to seem rich

It’s my humble opinion that I think it depends on the car. In 2010, I bought a 98 Subaru forester for 2800 it had blown head gaskets and needed a new engine. $1500 later , the car got new head gaskets and a used engine. That being said I drove the car trouble free from 2010- 2018. After the engine replacement, All I really did during that time was maintenance. I took that car from Massachusetts to California where she finally died, due to rust from the New England winters. So I spent roughly $4500 on a used vehicle that i kept driving for about 7.5 years. Not a bad deal. In my humble opinion.
I’d rather do that than take on a car note.
      Cheers

I bought a used car one time in my life, when I was around 19 or so - my first car. Well, twice actually, as my wife's grandfather "sold" us a very old car with almost NO mileage on it many years ago for a hundred dollars. Ever since then I only buy new cars. I get the "beater" part of the discussion, but my personal opinion is I'm an adult, and I refuse to be stuck on the side of the road in a broken down car in the winter like my friends and I would find ourselves as late teenagers or early twenty somethings just to save a few dollars. LOL. Nope, not doing that. One of the VERY few "vices" I give myself is a new car every seven to ten years. I pay cash, keep them in EXCELLENT condition with low mileage and always get a great trade in for it. I just don't understand ADULTS driving "beaters" to safe a few bucks. If you do it the way I do, you never "pay" too much for a new one because of the great trade in and the cash purchase with it. Oh well, I guess we are all different.

2008 Galaxy Grey FA5. Bought in 2018 in Texas at 107k. Currently living in Ohio, and just hit 180k this weekend. Clear coat was shot when I bought it, looks horrible now. Accidentally backed into my Jeep, has a silver base model trunk right now. Did bolt ons and hondata at 140k. Only time the car has let me down was when the starter died around 160k. Besides regular oil changes, I did new Exedy clutch, hybrid racing CMC, spark plugs, coolant, valve adjustment and more around 145k. About to do a suspension refresh. Car starts right up every time, still gets 28mpg average around backroads, and is FUN to drive. Insurance is roughly $60 a month for a 25 year old. And it’s PAID OFF. I couldn’t imagine spending money on a new car, anything else would feel like a downgrade and I would spend way more money on payments, insurance and maintenance. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. This car is a sign of wealth and happiness through being frugal and finding enjoyment in something simple. Very well put about putting money into investments instead Gerb. 8th gen owners know what life is about!!!

In the American landscape, where roads wind and dreams converge, there exists a humble chariot known as the beater car. Its weathered exterior tells tales of countless journeys, while its steadfast spirit whispers of resilience. Like a seasoned traveler, it navigates the highways of life with grace, embracing each scratch and dent as a mark of character. With simplicity in its veins and freedom in its heart, the beater car offers a sanctuary from the pressures of modernity, where the cost of ownership is measured not in dollars, but in the memories forged along the way.

Beater cars are the best 🚙👍.. I totally agree 💯. I drive my old Laguna 3 DCI 2007 .bought it X2 years ago for 4200 dollars . It's done now 160000 kilometers, and it's been great . I have changed only the front wheel bearings and worked on the brakes .. it starts every time even in the harsher Swedish winters at - 23 degrees 👌🤣.

Cars these days all look similar and don't have that raw experience unlike newer ones. Your car will turn more heads than a newer Si. Its styling aged well, sounds better and will still gap the newer civic. The satisfaction of beating a new $20+K car is such a great feeling too.

My car payments on my toyota 86 are preventing me from doing a lot of other things I enjoy but it got me into a car group and it allows me to work on my civic in the summer. I'm over halfway through the payments and I have no regrets but if my parents didn't let me live in their basement for cheap things would be very different.

I have an FA5 with full bolt ons that I bought for $5k in 2019, and daily 2009 Nissan Murano I got from California for $4k which I keep rust free by spraying fluid film on the undercarriage. Full coverage for both cars is less than $120. Planning to get another FA5. People don't realize how much money you throw away with car payments + insurance.

Both are paid off so it's a win! I am looking at a 2012 Highlander, one owner great service history right now. I am not a big fan of any of these new cars and all the bells and whistles. Story of my new car. I have 2012 civic and decided to get newer car this year for my self and my wife as we needed 2 car. I ordered new 2024 toyota prius prime and boght it at 10% APR . I registered it and insured it at day of purchase and man my insurance premium was $3840/year . I never enjoyed that car driving to home from dealership. Monthly car payment was 312 biweekly. Keep that car 5 month and sold it as i wasn’t enjoying that car. My car payment and insurance was $1000/month. Long story short still have my civic and found another good deal at facebook marketplace for 2016 Toyota rav4 . Paid it in cash and now i really enjoy driving both of my car without any monthly payment . Save your money for better things. Car is transportation and don’t needs to be to very fancy. If you have tons of money than its ok get what ever you want.

IMO, it is better to buy and keep a demonstrated reliable vehicle. New cars never stay new anyways because something happens to decrease the newness of it. I just prefer older cars and updating them if possible to make them better. Newer cars can have too much technology which can be costly to fix when the warranty expires. I am in Germany currently living and working here for now, but I own and drive a 2007 Si that I really love. It has about 230k miles on it and the K20 still sounds like it is new. I have put money into it to replace old parts. It is in the shop now for tie rod replacement and new wheels. I believe in many ways it is better than new cars because it is simple, reliable, and VTEC. 😂 It will go back home with me when I return home. I believe it is one of the better cars Honda has created. I can save lots of money having a good, used car.

Never enjoying a luxury vehicle “You Can Afford” just to avoid a payment sucks in my eyes. I’ll never advise anyone to purchase a car they can’t afford. But if your working your whole life, bussin ya ass, only to drive one car for 20-30yrs just doesn’t appeal to me. You have one life to live, enjoy it while you can.

Great video!!! In the past 45 years, my wife and I have purchased 13 cars (the first two were POS when we bought them). Current pair is 20 and 10 years old. 7 of them have been new (including the 20 year old one), 5 have been used. When "it's time" we compare the cost of new vs. used for the model that we want. A lot of times, a new one makes more sense than one that's a couple years old. I'm too old/inflexible/lazy to fix 'em myself, so there is a benefit to new. The fact that we keep them so long probably makes it a wash. We're fortunate that we have a local independent shop that is honest and takes really good care of us.
