      The movie is also an adaptation of the novel "Erasure" by Percival Everett, who named the character of Ellison as an ode to Ralph. If you love Ellison, I'd recommend checking out Erasure! It's honestly one of the best books I ever read.

    I'm a white guy, but I am also autistic, so I felt emphasize with a character on a different level, being sort of an outsider. And the feeling of having to pretend you are something your not, or building a different sense of identity in order to fit in. When I was in college I didn't hide the fact I was autistic, but I felt in order to fit with my friends at the time, I started drinking and smoking pot more. When I did that I felt like I could shed "the autistic me". But now being out of college I see that as a mistake.And I still struggle with my identity as an autistic man. So when I saw the film, I did not see it as a "black" movie which in itself is a problematic term. It is a movie about a man who wants to be defined on his own terms. Which is a feeling I am certainly chasing after.

  • @leapeace1201

    so good. what I aspire to write is the way that the arc of the main character has all the familiar tropes of a story, but none of that is important except as a vehicle for the message, which lingers in the imagination.

    I liked the film but a few things didn't seem right to me. I found it hard to believe the brother could be a plastic surgeon with his habit - perhaps better if he was a marketing exec or similar. I didn't see the point of the interaction with the neighbour on the beach as it didn't advance the story in any way. I also found the ending(s) odd - the apology ending seemed perfect, the death scene would of been good with less "action". The Blazing Saddles ending seemed wrong to me. Having all 3 endings was just a mess (to me). A very good film nevertheless.

    • @youyao

      Agree on some of your points though I did like that they were showing that they were editing as they went along and it did show that he couldn’t necessarily win as far as executing his vision without pandering to popular appeal, also the very very last scene where he got into his brothers car and nodded to a guy sitting just outside the car confused me

    • @cianicarson8149
      @cianicarson8149 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@youyaoso the ending involving the random guy . I believe that was supposed to be like here we go another slave on the plantation movie and he was probably a actor getting ready for the set. Which just goes back to the idea of Hollywood always putting out these slave movies. That was my take on it .

    • @cianicarson8149
      @cianicarson8149 5 месяцев назад +3

      I think the relationship with the neighbor was really just a example of the main character being who he was and showing his flaws. His way of shutting others out and I think it was a great add in because some people don’t forgive you for shutting them out and making them feel alone.

    • @spicyd1
      @spicyd1 4 месяца назад +6

      @youyao when he saw the actor dressed as a slave, I think he acknowledged him because he realized, yeah here's another overdone, stereotyped role this guy is playing but he's just doing a paying job, it's like yeah I had to write something distasteful in order to "make it" so I see you dude, you gotta do what you gotta do

    • @mikebikekite1
      @mikebikekite1 4 месяца назад

    I loved the love story between Lorraine and Maynard, as well as the focus on his mother’s health decline. If it had just focused on race stereotypes/relations in America, it may have become a very ‘heavy’ film to digest but the relationships that unfold in the background balanced things out beautifully.
