As a Team Sky fan I think they did not follow through with their promise to release him. I think if sky believes they can rehabilitate him, why not give him an internal year ban while they get him help. He’s a good rider, shame he is acting this way.
this show of yours is new to me, this summer. i stopped looking at bikes after my customised Trek 5500 was stolen in Vancouver. It was emotionally painful to even hear a freewheel spin past as I walked on the sidewalk. Then , after 6 depressing years I finally bought a Tarmac LE in March. At first I had some trouble getting myself motivated but your program motivated me and reminded me of how I used to feel about myself when riding, so now I am fully back on my feet doing 50-100 plus K daily and I thank you for your part in that recovery!
Moscon has had multiple warnings and not only has he failed to take responsibility for his actions, he made life harder for his team mates at the Tour by getting himself kicked off, which is selfish. And let's not forget if he'd assaulted someone in any other workplace he'd be sacked.
Yea, George Hugh, because Moscon is a *pro athlete* which means we're all supposed to treat him like something special and make sure the social rules of human civility don't apply to him like they do to the rest of us mere mortals... Personally, I've had more than enough of celebrity meaning that "I can do whatever I want, because I'm above it all". Quit rationalizing poor behavior.
Even soldiers are expected to behave according to the law and binding international conventions - and they kill people for a living (if you'll excuse that turn of phrase). In the final analysis, there's no excuse for this behaviour. There's also the reputation damage to the sport to consider, which it can ill afford at this time, let alone the team itself. The 'optics' are poor.
I think Moscon’s ban should be longer because of the repetition of having his out-lashes. I do think that the anger management appointments should be mandatory for him as well.
Year long ban and fired from the team. He's a repeat offender with no obvious signs of improvement. If the punishment fits the crime, you'll be less inclined to commit the crime in the 1st place.
Video heading, "Should he be banned?" Opening question in the video, "Is the 5 week ban long enough?" which sort of assumes that yes, he should be banned. It's not fair to take into account charges that were dropped as by definition they were not proven if they were dropped. Whatever the scale of penalties is should be applied strictly, rather than something being made up on an ad hoc basis, but a 5 week ban is not as meaningful as a ban from a specific number of events of a certain level. 5 weeks is probably just about long enough to recover from all the minor injuries and niggles that athletes suffer from and come back stronger, which is hardly the intention.
This, for me, is an argument about the 'good ol' days' when the peloton was led by a patron. Cipo and Hinault come to mind. I suggest Moscon start something up with Bouhanni or Greipel. Let me know how that works out.
Possibly a reasonable sanction from the UCI, although probably on the lenient side given previous bans. But if I was in charge of team Sky I'd terminate his contract. I'd also then look into whether something had gone wrong in the support, guidance and education the team had provided the rider following earlier indiscretions - especially his racist outburst. But bottom line was he was that he was told he was already in the last chance saloon - only to now get another chance.
Want to commend GCN for showing the easyjet tweet. I had seen that but figured due to the sponsored videos GCN has done with easyjet that they wouldnt show it. Not a big deal but still, nice too see
The first 2 offences (not including the Reichenbach incident) would/should originally warrant a 5-week ban. The remaining offence from the TDF should be what gives him a bigger reprimand, a year or more. Aside from the incidents themselves, it appears as though he's not remorseful for anything he's done, otherwise his behavior would improve. But he's on Sky, that gives him a much bigger free pass than his fellow non-Sky peloton compatriots.
Thanks, Dan, so many new and worthy winners, congrats to all and woohoo to the TwoFiveSix duo in the Transcontinental. And there was chat elsewhere about whether James is the new Cannibal, and I'd say that his photo seems to indicate cannibalistic tendencies. And his competitors probably figured, yeah, better to let him get far up the road than anywhere near us. And I grin. And enjoy all your coverage of all sorts of races. And maybe your Rider of the Week will become your Rider of the Month. Form like that could land him on the podium in Spain. He is smokin' the tires up those climbs.
UCI have told him that hes only allowed to train for the next 5 weeks, not allowed to race. Allowed to come back just in time for the World Champs. Sounds like Team Sky are being punished more than he is. He is being allowed to concentrate on one of his A races of the year without any of those pesky little races he has to do to keep his contract. If anything, to me, it sounds like he has been rewarded by the UCI
Frankly speaking, I find Moscon's three week penalty for rascist slurs to be inadequate, more so than the penalty for the current incident. Yes, I agree he needs some counselling but there needs to be deterent aspect to the penalty which necessitates considering his prior offences. I'm certain Team Sky sponsors won't be pleased to be associated with Moscon's behaviour. In the end, I suspect that issue of brand damage will determine his fate more than his ability as a pro cyclist.
I think that a ban needs to be meaningful and by denying Moscon a ride in the World Champs that would have sent a more powerful message. Although as he will not be able to compete in the Vuelta he will at least not be able to prepare as thoroughly.
This may be controversial, then again, this is the comment section and everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Moscon had too light a punishment. Sagan was banned for the rest of the Tour de France last year after a clear review of the video showed that his elbow stuck out because it was a reaction from Cavendish's brake levers catching his handlebar. That judgement was handed down swiftly too. This Moscon decision took several weeks and with no significant cost to Moscon. What did this decision take away from him? That is nowhere close to the punch he dished out. Punishments are designed to inflict pain, psychological or otherwise. This is a slap in the hand.
Michael Albasini made racist slurs to Kevin Reza several years ago in the TdF and received no ban. A five week ban for Moscon saying mean things is too much punishment. Public knowledge/tarnishment of Moscon's reputation should be more than enough discipline.
GCN has learned from the worst. This is drama mongering for views. GCN should try to maintain a good name and leave the sensationalism to the infotainment media companies that know nothing else but drama.
He should be held accountable for his actions. A real punishment would be to miss out on major races, so for this reason the ban should be extended. He should then try and find out if there's something making him unhappy, and try and change that
That kid is young and has a long life ahead of him. He needs a break from cycling and intensive anger management classes so that he can be a productive member of society.
I think a permanent ban from racing would be more appropriate, as racism can hardly be controlled and it will always come to outbursts, If you are talking about Jahn Ulrich I have to admit that I am as a German cannot understand and tolerate such behaviour as a public figure, jail time for him would be the right thing. It's such a growth how some people act and behave, I work and travel all year long around the world, I will and have ever understood and tolerated such behaviour. By the way as usual great show please continue in such good manner
The punch was provoked by the "victim" rider who by some reasons decided that cutting someones path on the start is fine thing to do. In this case that "victim" has to be banend for irregular (dangerous and reckless) riding, and only after that Moscon's ban has to be considered. So, he should be banned by two reasons. One is objective and factual, another is politically fashionable at this time. 1) He rides for Team Sky, which has unseen support from pharma, sports medicine and law team. That combo clears team's riders in cases when high level of drugs are found in body fluids (asthma, functional dehydration, transient kidney failure, TUE covered spleen removal, etc). And according to Phil Gaimon's books, the teams don't mix clean riders and dopers. They hate each others, so in order to maintain so called "team spirit" and ensure in-race cooperation, it should be "all dopers" or (exclusive OR to be precise) "all clean" riders in a given team. 2) His last name sounds like Moscow, so (I am just using the British politician's logic) it's "highly likely" that he's involved into so called "Russian doping program". The latter is proved to be fake and fabrication, so most of the athletes were reinstated, but Moscown has to be an exception and be banned.
No one has mentioned Gianni Moscon's personal life, home life, upbringing or current support system outside of cycling. I wonder if the root of his low self esteem is perhaps the suffocating obedience to team SKY where he likely has no voice. I think he is the only Italian on the team so maybe his pent up frustration would dissipate on a more familiar team.
Put this way you can only expect people to comment that yes, Moscon deserves an exemplary ban....... the question is biased. So, let's be clear, if we need to stick to UCI rulings for the Froome case, for the badly managed Wiggins case, and for thousands of others, then we should stick to this UCI decision. If, on the other hand we want to argue that the UCI has proven to be unable to properly manage doping cases as well as discipline then the reasoning should be way broader
The intitial violence came from his "victim" who deliberatelly or recklesly (due to inability to comprehend the good sportsmanship pattern in peloton) crossed Moscon's path on the start.
@@lisapet160 That is fair enough, you should point this out and show your frustration, but lashing out like that is too much. You can have an argument and report it to the team, but don't hit your opponent. How does that solve anything.
Jon Burnell That actually was eaxactly what you call "show your frustration". Neither his fist nore elbow touched the rival's body. May be even the soft tissue of his forearm (can't judge from the video shooting angle) did not land on the helmet. As the result, his rival's ride was not disturbed at all, which is not the case of initial part of incident, where Moscon had to work hard and agile to avoid the crash. Besides, at the moment of the "punch" (the frustration gesture actually), Moscon was moving away from rival and "landing that punch" backwards - you could hardly smach a fly sitting on the rival's helmet in such setup. Ask anyone who's doint martial arts at any level - even amature novice would explain you that.
@@lisapet160 I've not found any good video footage so I'll take your word. However, this doesn't excuse the racism or when he has threatened spectators. FYI I studied karate for 11 years and wing chun for 5. At no point did I ever use it outside the dojo though. In fairness, I think there is a big discrepancy in how riders are treated, some get away with anything and other are penalised for sneezing.
+Jon Burnell Yes, the uncutted videos from the start had been misteriously cut from the RUclips domain. Thry this one in slow motion: ruclips.net/video/NtEBuPbtxpY/видео.html Or better: stop-walk frame by frame from the 11th to 14th second. You'll see the rider rocking his bike and weaving the front wheel almost to the collision with Mascon.
Wasn't this more normal back in the day? I remember seeing riders acting like assholes all the time when I watched cycling as a kid. Gianni Bugno was fairly aggressive, Cadel Evans clearly had some anger issues as well. Im not saying Moscon shouldn't get punished, because some of his acts are just too unsportsmanlike, such as throwing a bike at another rider. But maybe it's also a sign of the times we live in when people want to see him ruled out altogether? After all we are all different, and riders like Moscon honestly just make the really big sportsmen look even better. A shot at some hindsight. Just my opinion, and it's all water under the bridge now anyways. :)
I am not prepared to say a complete ban but to me the punishment, given his history, is not enough and I doubt his team will follow through as they have said. In any event, there is a lot of young talent out there that would love a shot and can present a much better image.
I'd like to see Gianni rehabilitated and winning races in 5 years but I don't understand how Sky hasn't fired him yet. Not that it would make me happy if he was.
I've played rugby for 20 year. I'm all for second chances but this wouldn't stick. Also, if I lash out at someone at work I don't know if I would even get a second chance.
its not good enough. like you said he isn't missing any major objectives so he wont feel the full weight of the punishment. after previous offences, it certainly isn't good enough
He exhibits a marked propensity towards violence and poor sportsmanship which has no place in the sport. The ban should include some type of mandatory counseling to address his anger issues.
Moscon - ban for longer before he really causes a serious injury - if he punched someone off a bike in the bunch ( as he tried at the Tour) and caused a crash.... On Ullrich, does it matter what profession the strangling attempt victim was?
His behavior is habitual and not an isolated incident! He needs serious help and should be suspended much longer and required to get counseling for an extended period of time.
The anger management is one thing that has to be addressed for sure, but racism shouldn't be tolerated on ANY sport and should call for a more significant punishment. This guy hasn't improved his attitude much after years of "incidents".
It all depends on whether Sky are genuinely going to help Moscone and get him some help with his anger issues or not. If they really do get him some sort of counciling or other help that really is aimed at teaching him to control his anger, as he's obviously got a real problem above being a egotistical twat, then the punishment is fine. If not then he should have got a lot more to try to teach him that way.
Gianni Moscon: A violent racist? Nope. Dump him. Jan Ullrich: A violent misogynist? Full punishment. We need to police the norms of our sport for current and past riders, regardless of achievements.
You would hope that the riders would police themselves on things like this. But nothing. Waiting for a leader to take a stand against racism. Who cares about plastic in the ocean when we can’t even treat humans with respect!
Gianni should have had a longer ban, or even worse have lost his ride with Sky. If you are on the worlds most prestigious cycling team, you should be held to a high standard.
He should not be allowed to race for the rest of the year.Team Sky should also terminate his contract and make an explain of him. This is the only way this guy will learn.
Moscon is an incredible cyclist with a huge chip on his shoulder. Cofidis destroyed bouhanni's carreer by enabling his unforgivable behaviour and being to lenient. Sky should take Moscon out of competition for a couple of months of intense anger management training and psychoanalysis. Without that, he'll be out of cycling in a year.
Should have been ban and fired from the team the moment he said something racist and definitely when he assaulted another rider, stuff like that should not be tolerated in any sport
Can't the Europeans press charges against him and throw him in jail for saying something racist? That's what should have been done. Five years in jail, at least, and forfeiture of all his assets. Racism is our highest moral crime.
Surely this behaviour should not only be subject to UCI regulations and punishments, but also the local law of which ever country the Peloton is currently racing in. After all, if I, a civilian, were to be a repeat offender, and violently attack someone, police and courtrooms would eventuate.
If teams allow this behaviour they should be banned from the tour forthwith. Not just the rider to be banned but the entire team for 3 seasons minimum. Drugs, bad behaviour, times for cycling to get cleaned up. Maybe many of these guys can get help with behaviour - but in the neantime they'recsetting a bad example to youth. Tougher justice leads to teams knowing the laws cant bent for them.
Always amazed by people's desire for people they don't know to have their lives wrecked by being excluded from their career for pretty minor stuff. In real life you might loose your job for hitting somebody but it would hardly preclude you from ever working again. I'd suggest a more reasonable punishment would be significant docking of salary, may be busting back down to UCI minimum + maybe 20% per year of experience with said punishment following a rider wherever they go in the pro peloton.Other sensible punishments to add would be docking a % of all UCI points and prize money a team can win would drive self enforcement and also reduce a riders value in the transfer market.
MOSCON: I think he should have been punished a long time ago. Too little too late. He has been racist and, more recently, a general a-hole. To me, this speaks more to the lacklustre approach the UCI has taken. We cannot allow this type of behavior to be normalized. This is my two pence.
Was Gianni Moscon's punishment appropriate? Let us know what you think.👇
Global Cycling Network they did not follow through on their word. I would have just fired him. Is he even that crucial to Sky?
Yes. He should. It’s that simple.
As a Team Sky fan I think they did not follow through with their promise to release him. I think if sky believes they can rehabilitate him, why not give him an internal year ban while they get him help. He’s a good rider, shame he is acting this way.
No we need a bad boy in peloton 😈
Huge Sky fan but they need to dump him. No place for violence in the peloton.

Surprise surprise Moscon did something wrong again. He threw a fellow rider's bike at the rider (Jens) after a crash in a race.

Put Gianni Moscon in the ring with Nacer Bouhanni and let them go at it.

Should be a much longer ban and sky have enough public animosity with out this child causing further problems get rid 👎🏻
The UCI should of given Moscon a more severe sanction and team Sky should expect more from their riders and terminate he’s contract.

I'd like to see Gianni rehabilitated and winning races in 5 years but I don't understand how Sky hasn't fired him yet. Not that it would make me happy if he was.
1 year ban as a last punishment any other violation would become a permanent ban.
I've played rugby for 20 year. I'm all for second chances but this wouldn't stick.
Also, if I lash out at someone at work I don't know if I would even get a second chance.
i think a ban needs to be atleast 3 months, or it doesnt really impact the rider since he can just swich up his goals
its not good enough. like you said he isn't missing any major objectives so he wont feel the full weight of the punishment. after previous offences, it certainly isn't good enough
He exhibits a marked propensity towards violence and poor sportsmanship which has no place in the sport. The ban should include some type of mandatory counseling to address his anger issues.
Moscon is very veyr lucky that Sky have not taken further action against him, they must really rate his ability
Moscon - ban for longer before he really causes a serious injury - if he punched someone off a bike in the bunch ( as he tried at the Tour) and caused a crash.... On Ullrich, does it matter what profession the strangling attempt victim was?
Moscon not punished enough, but Sky won't sack him as another team will pick up a talented rider for a cheaper fee
Where is the Tour of Portugal news?!
His behavior is habitual and not an isolated incident! He needs serious help and should be suspended much longer and required to get counseling for an extended period of time.
Question team GCN, which o e of you guys is the fastest sprinter
I think that will be Chris Opie... He actually has a series on it gcn.eu/SprintFaster
The anger management is one thing that has to be addressed for sure, but racism shouldn't be tolerated on ANY sport and should call for a more significant punishment. This guy hasn't improved his attitude much after years of "incidents".
Anger management for Moscon? I think that cutting 3 months wages would do the trick - that is where it hurts....
Griffin Easter who thought Christmas had come early...oh Dan.
Ban him completely!! His behaviour is and has been disgusting!!!!
Violent conduct has no place in sport let alone cycling....such bans should be standardised across sport, if it was football it would be 3-4 months.
Not enough. He'll keep on doing it.
Should not be on Sky and for sure needs help. I do hope he can get it together and be he strong rider he should be.
Such a light punishment is almost encouragement to keep going.... You do this in a car rather than a bike, you probbly get jail time
You dont Say We are really interested in people's views, that's why we asked for them in the comments
NO!! He should not be banned. It was a minor infraction.
Surely this behaviour should not only be subject to UCI regulations and punishments, but also the local law of which ever country the Peloton is currently racing in.
After all, if I, a civilian, were to be a repeat offender, and violently attack someone, police and courtrooms would eventuate.
These kind of repeat behavior isn't indicative of improvement. Instead he probably thinks of it as how can I get away with this next time.
I think he should be kicked out for a year
Moscon needs to get reeled in now, while he is young. 6 months!
Minimum, should be a year if not more for the anti sportsman creep! he has a very bad personality trait that shows a violent trend.
Jan Ullrich is just too old-school for modern days Hahaha
If teams allow this behaviour they should be banned from the tour forthwith. Not just the rider to be banned but the entire team for 3 seasons minimum. Drugs, bad behaviour, times for cycling to get cleaned up. Maybe many of these guys can get help with behaviour - but in the neantime they'recsetting a bad example to youth. Tougher justice leads to teams knowing the laws cant bent for them.
5 weeks isn't much of a ban for the severity of his offense. Especially in light of his past issues. UCI and team Sky decisions are disappointing.
Get him the f*** out of the pro peloton! Racism, assaults, and immaturity is unacceptable to something that once was a gentleman’s sport.
Tour of Utah was amazing!! Sorry but I laughed when the rider celebrated early 😂 they even tried to tell him but he was too euphoric
Matheus Barbosa hahaha
TRiTGeRizZ right? Lol
Hes italian what do u expect ? A good temper ? Please....
team sponsors want him to represent them ? I dont want him representing me or my sport to others.
Gianni should be made to take anger management classes, Even if it pisses him off.
What about now?!!!
He needs to get a 1-month ban. And have to take anger management class.
its irrelevant the ban, only got it because you could see it on tv. worse goes on that you cant see
MOSCON: I think he should have been punished a long time ago. Too little too late. He has been racist and, more recently, a general a-hole. To me, this speaks more to the lacklustre approach the UCI has taken. We cannot allow this type of behavior to be normalized. This is my two pence.
