I was there during the Draco Malfoy drama.
Draco was never one of my favorite characters, but I can sympathize with Draco fans as similar things have happened to characters I’ve been a fan of.
    It’s honestly a bit sad.
Especially because she has went back and said that with closer inspection Ronmione has a bit more complexity to it, but Draco can’t be viewed the same way.
Honestly I always imagined Draco and Harry as contrasts to each other.
    The chosen one
And the boy with no choice perspective was always very appealing to me.
Honestly I loved that he was a more complex bully rather than a purely evil stereotype, but apparently that’s all Rowling saw him as.
Some Draco lovers have begun to see the Cursed child as some sort of try at redemption, because Draco is a lot more sympathetic.
Honestly I don’t blame those who are still mad. A lot of people saw Draco as the most complex characters of the series just for JK Rowling to laugh at them.

    • @ArteoftheMist
      @ArteoftheMist 5 лет назад +74

I love the concept of the chosen one set up against the boy with no choice - just exploring their dynamic. Not even within a friendship role or romantic role, just literally their dynamic is fascinating. It comes across as Rowling wanting Draco to be viewed as a one-dimensional bully which is just a waste of potential.

    • @MetisRose95

I think that's kind of Rowling's problem in general...everything seems to be black and white/good and evil to her. Even Snape who is really one of the most morally gray characters you can get Rowling seems to always be firmly pushing him to the "good" side. Draco is bad so there can't be any good elements that would make him more complex, Sirius is good so we're just gonna ignore the not so good things he did, etc. She seems almost afraid of morally gray despite the fact that most of her characters seem to fall there.

  • @FallzVentus
    @FallzVentus 5 лет назад +263

I was a movie fan, but I fell off around Half Blood Prince. I was kinda just... done. I didnt know why but the story wasnt really enjoyable to me anymore. Years later, I realized I had a problem with representation in HP. Not in terms of LGBT or race representation, but representation of the other houses. We learn SO MUCH about gryffindor and slytherin but barely ANYTHING about Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw. What those students environments were like? How they were usually treated? I began to feel the world building was incomplete. This might not be the case with the books. I also might have missed something in the movies, but from where I stand, there wasnt enough exploration of Hogwarts as a whole. I also didn't like how black and white the houses were portrayed as (again this could be different in the books). We learn through extra content the characteristics that put you in each house, but in the realm of the plot, it didnt matter. Gryffindor would always be good. Slytherin would always be evil. It felt very stale.
Again, I probably missed some things since I never technically finished the series but the world of Harry Porter just feels incomplete to me. The characters are great, but the world is.
    . a half drawn picture.

    • @poliglotfreak634
      @poliglotfreak634 5 лет назад +19

I am with you on this one, I feel that for how much details there are in the world of HP, the world still feels empty and incomplete. Hey that could be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on how you perceive it. To some it offers the opportunity to explore the missing parts, while to others it feels like it should have been more complete. (I like to explore and twist so I'm fine with it to some extent) In general I think the entire series is too black and white not just the houses and how they are portrayed ... and let's be honest why do you even need them. Why have an environment where you encourage segregation and prejudice among children as young as 11? Just because four people valued the qualities that the houses are known for, it doesn't mean people are simple enough to just qualify for one house. That's why I hate the concept of houses and sorting, if you need to distribute the students do it by the alphabetic order and you're set. Why make students hate each other because they are a Slytherin, a Gryffindor, a Ravenclaw or a Hufflepuff? Like, no. And yeah for how big the castle/school is, we sure don't explore it enough.
And even in terms of characters I think it could have been done more, especially with Harry. For a protagonist I think he was too one-dimensional or at least unrealistic (too much goodness for all the shit he had to endure). Yes he had moments of anger, there were a few moments where he did questionable things during the war, his fights with Draco (especially the sectumsempra spell), but he saw everything in pretty much black and white as well. I would have loved him more if he did something despicable (does the incident with Draco count, where he almost kills him?) that could really made him question himself, his identity, who he is, what he fights for, why he fights for something. That scene with Bellatrix in the Ministry .... that could have been the perfect moment for Harry to actually attack Bellatrix in a physical way, maybe even kill her (not with an AK, but by muggle means, smashing her head enough times to crack open the skull in a fit of rage and then realise what he did, but feel satisfied ... I don't know, I'm probably going off the tangent here, sorry). Because sorry, I would never risk my life for people who are either fawning over me because of my scar or badmouthing me whenever they feel like it and then expect me to save their asses, but then again, that's me and not Harry.
And can I confess something here? It's probably irrelevant to most people, but I have never read the last two books, I have watched all the movies, but will probably never read the last two books. Does that make me a bad HP fan? I can still enjoy the world and the characters, but in an AU re-imagining.

    • @oof-rr5nf
      @oof-rr5nf 5 лет назад +25

OP, rest assured, characterisation of the Houses is pretty terrible in the books as well. The books also strictly adhere to the Gryffindor = Good and Slytherin = Bad mentality. The few spots where Rowling tried to make Slytherins not as one dimensional, like with Slughorn, did not work very well either. I love Slughorn! He is weird and shady and morally grey. But one guy does not change how a reader would perceive Slytherins as a whole. And then Rowling back-peddled on the little progress she made by having McGonagall throw the Slytherins in the dungeons during the War at Hogwarts.

    • @oof-rr5nf
      @oof-rr5nf 5 лет назад +10

@@poliglotfreak634 I actually love the idea of Hogwarts houses being divided on dominant interests and traits of the students! It is a cool idea. Not very practical, sure, but that is not a necessity for me in fiction. And I really think it could work. If they take house loyalty less seriously, if building inter-house relationships is stressed upon by the school, and if Sytherin = all the Wizard Nazis is a thing that never happens (because, like you said, it does not make sense).
Dude the head bashing thing was so disturbing. I think Harry is so nice and good because HP is a children's books series? Plus plenty of people go through hell and survive with their goodness intact. But I get where you are coming from. I sometimes get confused if the reason I like Harry so little is because he is the protagonist (I don't often like them) or because his characterisation was lacking.
You aren't a bad fan. Interact with fandoms and things however you want. I enjoy and share things from fandoms where I haven't even ever seen/read the source material lmao. I am much, much worse.

    • @poliglotfreak634
      @poliglotfreak634 5 лет назад +9

@@oof-rr5nf Yeah it could work, but as you can see from the books and movies, no one is thinking about co-operation. There's persistent rivalry between the houses either they are shamed by what their house stands for (Slytherin and Hufflepuff), academics (Ravenclaw), the entire housepoint system, the school Quidditch games. All the time, students are encouraged and pitted against each other, and it shouldn't be like that. That's why I think it would be simpler to just take that thing out of the equation.
Sorry, head banging is a little over the top (I like me some gore, but hey if there's peer violence, why not teen-adult violence in HP), and yes, people can still be good after going through horrible shit, however, no one is 100% good, after a traumatic event even less so, because it scars you, it leaves marks and it does show in one's behaviour. A person can only take so much before snapping. Maybe Sirius' death could have been that breaking point for Harry.

Ok Controversial opinion, I don’t think the authors owe anything to the fan base. A lot of people say that fans are the reason for their success and yes, but the fan base don’t buy novels to support a person they like, they do it because they like what they create.
They are providing a service and receiving a pay for it.
You get what you pay for and the freelancer doesn’t owe you anything else.
You wanted their vision, you get that nothing less nothing more. If you didn’t do anything illegal you’re not obligated to take anybody’s shit and you’re not obligated to listen to anyone insulting you.
That said JK should really get a social media manager or fire the current one.

    • @poliglotfreak634
      @poliglotfreak634 5 лет назад +16

Of course the author doesn't have to step aside from their vision. It's their story, they can tell it however they want it. Not everyone will like it, but don't attack the author for pairing someone with a character they didn't like, that's why fanart and fanfiction exists, to let your imagination loose and explore different venues and possibilities that weren't explored in the canon material.
As a future author (hopefully) I would never tell my fans not to like a character because I don't like it or not to like a certain pairing that I didn't make canon. I would be like, 'I don't see that happening, but hey, if you like it, you do you, draw fanart, write fics (even smutty ones) maybe I'll read it and like it, maybe I'll stay away from it, who knows'. But the problem with Rowling is that she feels so strongly about how fans perceive characters and ships that she's actively discouraging them (at least that's the feeling I get) and fans should be mature enough to just be like: 'hey, I don't like how this ended or developed, I'll write my own version/vision, act like it never happened in the books and be happy about it'.

I don’t think that’s such an unpopular opinion. I agree that authors / creators don’t owe anyone anything. I don’t think she owes fans anything. It is her creation. I just think she doesn’t understand that fandom doesn’t always agree with her and doesn’t have to. She doesn’t deserve any hate or vitriol. In regards to the Draco controversy I think the fans are in the right on this one because at the end of the day the character is just a kid (yes even right at the end, not counting epilogue because NOPE!) parroting the views his parents have held since before he was born and for that I find him quite a tragic character and he did have potential for good, his wand symbolising that. I was re-watching the early films recently and seeing Draco really shocked me, as a kid back when they first came out I thought he was just a horrible bully - but as an adult, seeing how he acts it is so clear that he feels insecure and that he has to live up to his parents expectations.
I don't, however, want to ignore the bad things Draco did and he should be held accountable for his actions - but I also believe that how a child is raised will inevitably affect his life. I am not sure if JK once felt this way or just didn't see what other fans saw in him, which saddens me because I do think he deserved a more redemptive arc.
In regards to JK as a whole I think she presents a clear example of when an author becomes too good - usually during a works lifecycle, the editor and the literary agent provide feedback on how to improve on a work as well as maybe pointing out holes that the author may not have noticed. However, in my experience as an editor, when an author becomes successful it is a lot harder to provide that feedback and have the author actually listen to you. I do think if an editor or someone had been more vocal we probably might of not have had the Epilogue.
I also refuse to accept The Cursed Child as canon, it was an obvious money making ploy (which is what all publishing is), but the key thing was that it was not creating something new or unique for the fandom, it was relying on the success of the HP books and JK's name without actually providing good content. Urgh! I hate it!
Basically I believe JK should have stepped back from fandom a long time ago, she wouldn't have made as much money as she has done but I think more fans would have held their respect for her word as compared to now.

Sarah K I love your comment and I’d also like to highlight that in the cursed child (jkr saying it’s cannon) he’s shown to have been really lonely as a child during school.
To have her so blatantly discredit her fans views on a characters struggles, only to do a 180 and say that he was never truly awful and never admitting she was wrong is a huge slap in the face.
As well as this, I’ve recently been lucky enough to see the cursed child in the theatre and I will tell you right now, harmionie and Ron’s daughter act exactly the same as Draco did, but she’s the hero’s child so it doesn’t count. (I also have an issue with the fact that if hermionie didn’t marry Ron she couldn’t have been minister of magic, and becomes a horrible bitter teacher, but I digress)
As I was saying, she is constantly changing her mind and that is an issue, similar to how a TV series can’t go on too long because they end up changing the story just to keep it interesting. That’s kinda what she’s doing, dragging out the series too long

If you don't actually put it in the book, you can't tack it on later. After the book's published, your opinions on its characters don't mean more than a reader's opinions. There’s literally one place that that information would be placed at in the books, and even then we could only take it was a grain of salt because it would have came from Rita skeeta and not dumbledore himself. In the end you can believe what you want, but I take that as adding more to dumbledore we never got to actually see in the books, because dumbledore was all about his business, and not about his personal business, and he’s dead. I honestly feel that if dumbledore was said to be gay in the books, the fandom would still rage because she killed a gay character

everytime rowling says something that just contradicts all the happiness i feel for Harry Potter i purposefully go and read some fanfiction that is just so far removed from her vision of canon that it would probably make her cry.
EX: 1. wolfstar adopting harry and re-naming him and sending him to school in ireland
    2. snape and james fell in love and lily was a surrogate, HEA
    3. harry kills the dursleys and goes on to create his own side of the war with hermonie and ron as his seconds
    4. or my personal favorite - ot3 golden trio - ron/harry/hermonie post-war dealing with trauma and moving in together in the newly renovated black house and torn between wanting to fix their broken world so nothing like this happens again or saying f#ck you all we’re going on vaction!
i always feel revalidated and like i’ve personally one up’d rowling afterwards.

I think every author should be flexible and accept the fact that some readers will interpret characters differently than the author intended. Especially when it comes to side characters, because they're simply not fleshed out enough to only be seen as this one version.
It actually pisses me off that J.K doesn't see why so many people like Draco for more reasons than just "Tom felton is hot" or "he's a bad boy".

  • @MargoooGirl

I grew up on Harry Potter, I must've read the entire series at least seven times. I've read them in my native language as a kid, and then in English when I was older, listened to them as audiobooks, everything. I always related so strongly to Hermoine, I even looked like her! Still kind of do, actually. Smart, bossy, self-assured, critical to a fault and a hard time making friends,... I didn't ship her with Ron, because I didn't ship myself with Ron, if that makes sense. I always felt she would need a guy that was also smart and intelligent, that could go toe to toe with her, keep up in debates, that kinda thing. So I shipped her (me) with Draco, because i was young and naive and believed that she could 'save' him. Also the fanfics with her and Draco were soooo good!
Then later, I read somewhere that Rowling had been thinking of having her end up with Fred Weasly, though I have no idea if that was actually true or just a fandom rumor. But I liked that idea, Fred and George were funny, and very inventive, making all those joke-articles themselves, so that ship really sailed for me.
Then in 2014, I was in the fandom when Rowling gave the interview about Ron and Hermoine needing therapy. I didn't feel validated. I was angry and frustrated. Hermoine, the heroine of her own story, the backbone of the golden trio, the girl in charge of her own destiny, would not stay in a marriage where she was unhappy.
Either Rowling should've paired her up with a better match, or gone through with Ronmoine to the very end. I understand the work is Rowling's and that she has every right to speak of her characters any way she likes, but I would've much preferred if she hadn't said anything. I have a really hard time consciously ignoring what she has said about the characters, probably because I still think of the author as an authority.
So yeah, my head cannon is that Fred survives and ends up with Hermoine

To me, Rowling's comments felt like she thought they wouldn't make it as a couple, and as always with Hermoine, I'm inserting myself into the character waaaay to much. I've had relationships were I could not be myself, and they were not worth the fight.
But I'm really sorry if I came off as dismissive of counseling!

Oh my god, I remember the Fred/Hermione rumors? And it kind of made sense to me. Fred was this really fun loving, hilarious guy. But he was also incredibly brilliant. I could've easily seen Hermione being attracted to him. And that's my thoughts. Hermione would not stay in an unhappy marriage. She wouldn't do that to herself, Ron, or her children. She's always been such a strong, independent character(it's...why I find it annoying that in the AU world Scorpius and Albus go to in the Cursed Child, Hermione is apparently like Snape because she and Ron never got together...)

I have to admit at times I get annoyed with Rowling for just randomly throwing additional info. It's also unpleasant how Slytherin is treated in the books as the shit house but once merch appeared all of a sudden Slytherins were not so bad. My love for Harry Potter rivals my love for anime. It's the only book series that I'm in the fandom of and I still read Drarry fics to this day. Hats off to the Harry Potter fandom for still producing tons of great works after all these years. That is dedication.
That said, I remember all of these, even if I wasn't around for all of them. Those were some wild times...
"Neville and Luna getting together would be too neat," says the person who had two best friends marry as well as had the main character marry his best friend's sister. Oof. And let's not forget that Harry is a jock who married his high school sweetheart and grew up to be a policeman. If that ain't "too neat" I don't know what is.
Draco definitely should have had a better redemption arc. It's why that deleted scene from the DH2 movie where he runs to Harry is so fondly remembered. Also the "all Slytherins are evil" mentally is just a big yikes.
Oh Romione. Even I, a humble non-het shipper, saw this ship coming. It's sad that she would backtrack on something like this while also contradicting herself on other things. She needs to have a list at her side to keep of the things she says really. But honestly this controversy is not as bad as what I experienced in the Naruto fandom tho. Oh SasuSaku, you were doomed from the start...
I still love Harry Potter, I'm firmly walking the "death of the author" path, Cursed Child was dumb as heck but the conversations about it was fun, and I'll be here, reading fics and ignoring "canon" facts lol.
    Vanishing their waste indeed...

I feel like it's something that happened from both sides: JK began releasing stuff so fans wanted more and she gave them that. Eventually she kept going but because it was things her fanbase didn't want, that's when the anger began to fuel. I feel like both parties need to step back from the work, JK should mellow down a bit (which won't happen any time soon due to Fantastic Beasts 😅) and fans should decide if they want to listen to the canon or not and if not, there's always aus. Anyways! I've been a huge fan of Harry x Hermione since I was a wee lass and always will be 😂 I do love Dramione and Hinny as well and a bunch of other ones as the multishipper life never ends!

While the first concern of the purge focused on NSFW or violent content exposed to children, the possible second purge seemed to focus on people creating works that have themes like that and more that have potential to trigger people if they read it. Like a character cannot go through harsh conflict of abusive relationships or other problems, if those who had experienced IRL did not agree it was portrayed well or should not be written for public viewing. That fictional people is the same as RL people. People liking odd kinks and fetishes, equating to those as creepos IRL who would harm themselves or others. And more.
Makes me worried people really don't remember that fiction is not the same as reality. Unless there is evidence that contributes it, all works are deemed as fantasy.

I always thought that Hermione and Ron were kind of toxic as well but I also didn't care for them being canon. Calling everyone who likes Draco unhealthy also doesn't sit right with me. Most people clearly see that what he has done was not good but most also see that he was a child or teenager clearly also influenced by the time and the family he grew up in and maybe deserves a second chance. Her kind of judging a minor or really young adult like this, even if it's a fictional character, just doesn't make her very likable for me either. I was never a self insert "I want to be with Draco" kind of person and don't care how Tom Felton looks like because I don't even like the films that much and am more of a book fan myself but I still don't feel like you can just damn a young guy like him like this. Fans have no problem making up their own headcanons , fanons, and opinions on the meterial, then when Jk Rowling states what she thinks of her own characters, it’s a problem? I don’t get that anger that JK Rowling can’t say what she wants about her own character, and it makes no sense. Oh my goodness I have THOUGHTS. Harry Potter is interesting because I grew up with it, I'm in that age group where I literally grew up parallel to the characters. I loved the books (was definitely one of those kids who waited in line outside the bookstore to buy it at midnight when the new one was released) and so kind of deliberately avoided the fandom because I had gotten into fandom pretty young (at like... 10) and knew that being really involved in fandom colors your view of the original material and changes the nature of your expectations for the story. Obviously I love fandom, so this isn't meant as a condemnation, I just... sort of had decided that with Harry Potter, I wanted to enjoy the story as presented (kind of like how people avoid spoilers, I guess).
But Harry Potter is obviously a Goliath in terms of fandom, so while I haven't heard of all of these controversies (not being in the fandom extends to not engaging with a lot of the supplementary material that's come out over the years, like whatever JK Rowling has been tweeting about or whatever). I find it fascinating, like you said, how much the tone of the fandom has changed as time has gone on. The idea that the author is God and there exists a "one true" interpretation of the story as laid out by them is just... not an idea that has held much appeal to me for a very long time. I respect the work that JK Rowling has done, I enjoyed the hell out of her books, etc., etc., it's cool that she's been so supportive of fandom for so long, but she's just a person. It's been a long time since she wrote those books, how she sees them, how she sees her characters, how she sees the universe she built, it's going to change over time and it's doubly going to change as a result of her involvement with the movies and yes, also due to her involvement with the fandom.
For instance: Ron was always my favorite character. I related to him a lot. He wasn't exceptional in any particular way: wasn't super smart, or super athletic, or charismatic, didn't have a deep dark past, wasn't the chosen one or whatever... hell, he was angry and resentful at times and even ran away when things got really dark. But then he came back. And he recognized his faults and tried to do better. He was just... a great character in my opinion. And I though the Cursed Child just sort of portrayed him as a buffoon, and then JK Rowling said he was a bad match for Hermione. To me this just felt like she'd lost interest in, or lost track of, the way she'd originally envisioned Ron. Maybe she just doesn't like the "everyman" very much as a character archetype anymore. I don't know that I care that much. Let's all just be thankful that she hasn't decided to put out a "remastered" version of the original series that incorporates all the retconing that's been happening. (I'm sorry, no one will be able to convince me this was all part of a master plan she had from day one anymore than anyone will convince me that George Lukas had the original trilogy planned out since before A New Hope was released.)

Personally, I tend to subscribe to the Death of the Author philosophy, ie, what matters is what's canon and actually in the text, and authorial intent can be ignored if it contradicts how I interpret the original work (because not everything in a work of fiction is intentional).
So I don't really follow the authors of my favourite series on social media - that'd kinda spoil the fun for me?

I agree that a lot of Harry/Hermione shipping can be traced to the movies. Rupert and Bonnie were really sidelined for the movies, Rupert being made into the butt of jokes and Bonnie just barely doing anything. Meanwhile Kloves and I believe Alfonso shipped Harry and Hermione, so in addition to Kloves putting more focus on them in general, both of them, I believe I read, placed all sorts of nudges in that direction in the movies. Compound that with Emma growing up to be almost universally known as one of the most beautiful women in the world, and the classic “main two male and female characters must get together” trope that was especially strong due to the aforementioned sidelining of Rupert (who I might add was NOT especially attractive as he aged to many, whereas Daniel was), and I think it’s only natural that a lot of people would expect Harry and Hermione to be a thing, even as the (at least canon) seeds of Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione were planted rather early on.

Here's the thing, I think few fans expected Draco to have a "heart of gold." I think he was interesting because as a character he had potential for depth and a grey morality - no one expected him to be a knight in shining armor upholding the virtuous. He's grey and his lot in life - parentage and all, solidified his position within the dark lord's army whether he wanted it or not. Even if he didn't support Voldy, his Slytherin tendencies would've made him go about it in a subtle way (a la Snape who spied - maybe not to that extent but Draco wasn't going to throw his lot in with the "light" side visibly).

I agree with her concerns over Ron and Hermione. I always had the same ones. They just never seemed evenly matched, never had a healthy dynamic and I didn't like how Hermione always talked down to Ron. She was more like his mum than his gf most of the time and that is, rightly, a very unsexy dynamic and my least favourite romantic dynamic (but one we see far too much). I never minded that they dated to see but I don't buy they'd have lasted.

Draco being my favorite character I'm still annoyed by J.K Rowling opinions about it. I understand that Tom Felton may have play a role for some people but at the same time, she forget too easily that she never made Draco one layered. She herself created (maybe unvoluntarily) a deep and complex character. And then she gave a redemption arc to a even more complex (and sorry but quite problematic) character (yes, Snape), but don't understand that a lot of fans might hope for the same for Draco ? If she wanted to stay in a very binary view of the world, the good and the bad, she shouldn't have created ambigous or redeemed characters to begin with.
Finally, even if one sees Draco purely as a mean character, you can't deny the big amount of people (myself include) who actually enjoys "villains" or "mean characters" because in opposite to so many goody heroes, they seems more "real" or at least different. Liking a bad character doesn't mean you condone their actions but that you want to enjoy something more, or even sometimes you just like to see for once, villains succeed.
I really think that the rise of love for villains/bad people is an interesting topic in fandoms nowadays.
I loved that video, I love your channel. Thank you for all the amount of work you put in it.

    It’s after 3am ... what is sleep?!
Started reading Harry Potter after seeing the film at age 11. Reading the first book changed my life as I didn’t read novels, and was only an okay reader for my age. I am so grateful for all the worlds I have been able to visit since then.
My fave book is Prisoner of Azkaban & if you’d asked me for my favourite character as a kid I would’ve said Sirius Black. I think it’s the mystery and betrayal surrounding the plot. And the possibility of Harry being able to escape the Dursleys, and the loss of that. Sirius’ devotion to Harry and his parents. And how, ultimately, you see how broken Sirius is by the end of OotP; never getting over James’ death and treating Harry as a substitute (even if he doesn’t mean to). He’s a young man who suffered for most of his adulthood - he is a interesting parallel to Snape.

    Yay harry potter!
Yes keep up with the lists. I need all the lists.
    Now to harry.
    Ahem.
I have been a fan since I was...god..12? I was just starting high school. ( high school in Australia starts at the age of 12-13.) High school was hell for me. I was often friendless, the victim of bullying so vicious that my mother had to pull me out of school for a few weeks for my own mental health.
As a result of this, I read a lot. Mostly fantasy as a way to cope and escape from what I was going through. Then my sister gave me a copy of the first harry potter book. Very quickly it became a series close to my heart. A safe haven for me. Each book,I fell more and more in love with the world. I looked forward to each installment and each film.
I even went to the book launches for half blood prince and deathly Hallows.
It was a rather surreal moment when I walked out of the bookstore and went across the road to a cafe and all the customers were already reading the book.
I still love the books. And they will forever hold a place in my life.
That being said. When it comes to JK Rolwing, I feel conflicted. I admire her creativity and her charity work. But nowadays, I feel she may need to take a step back from her work. As with the Cursed Child and Crimes of Grindlewald could have been done better. I feel a slight disconnect when these works.
It could be the fact that I am older, but I wish for better stories form this great universe that she has created.

As a fan of the canon shipping of the HP universe, I look at it this way. I make the statements work for me instead of arguing with them. Opinions and how they fit it into canon (if I cannot fit them, I try harder to find a way) are what matters. Not getting angry about other opinions.
    Five examples for me are:
    1) Ron/Hermoine loved each other, ended up together, and had two kids together. Her comment doesn't say any different. Perhaps they did go to counseling or talk about how stupidly they treated each other, it was 19 years after all. But if it went the other way it still doesn't change the outcome of what happened.
    2) It's easy for me to say "The Cursed Child" is not canon. It doesn't ruin anything if I ignore it, and if others do consider it canon...again doesn't ruin anything. It was just a bad script with play-viewers saying it was a good play.
    3) Harry and Luna were friends who could have been more had Harry's attraction gone another way. They remained great friends. And since male to female best friends are harder to come by than people think without a romance storyline interfering, I tend to like it just as much this way.
    4) Neville/Luna were together at some point, but ended up not getting married by the epilogue. They married other people after their relationship was over That way I appease my wish for them together and still follow canon.
    5) This video is the first time I'm ever hearing Wolf Star. But all I heard from it was the Rowling didn't shock shippers so much as fans, and Remus's actor speculation. I never knew this ship was a thing and if I did what would it matter as Harry didn't know and the books are from his POV.
So far Rowling hasn't really given a quote that has gone against what she wrote. She just either looking at things and saying what if I had written it this way instead, or filling in the 19 years.

So many thoughts. I think the main two are Scorbus and the hate JK has for Draco. I personally really wanted Scrobus to happen, I thought it was pretty blatant in the play and it was a perfect opportunity to actually have an LGBT character represented rather then just talked about after the fact, like she did with Grindeldore.
As for the Draco thing, I understand why people are a little offended by her hate towards Draco. I personally found Draco interesting and would have liked to see some redemption for him (you do get some in the Cursed Child), but I think JK personally has an issue with it because of her own past with abusive relationships. I remember reading about her having been in/just left an abusive relationship when she started writing Harry Potter and I feel like she put a lot of negative character traits into Draco with that person in mind.
In general my opinion of, and patience with JK has changed over time. I used to take her word as gospel but after a while I felt like she just needed to stop, like she was just making comments to stay relevant.
As for my favourite book, hands down #3 Prisoner of Azkaban.

I grew up with the Harry Potter fandom. As a former hardcore Harry and Hermione shipper, I distinctly remember an interview with JK when Ron/Hermione became canon, she basically taunted Harmony fans stating that Ron/Hermione were OBVIOUSLY endgame and how could you see any potential in any other coupling with either Ron or Hermione. I saw the dysfunction of Ron and Hermione throughout the books and is a very firm believer that they wouldn't have made it as an adult relationship. That pairing screams immaturity throughout the entire book series. So in 2014, when JK stated what she did, I wasn't surprised. It seemed like she didn't have much faith in Ron and Hermione and therefore wrote them poorly. Ginny and Harry were an aftermath of this and were written just as poorly.
My favorite book is the Goblet of Fire.

@@katherinealvarez9216 There's nothing wrong with counseling. However, as a piece of fiction that Harry Potter is, people generally want a bit of escapism. Grand adventures, epic love is all a part of that. People don't want to hear about the flaws in their ship, which is why people were so upset at JK.

I would first like to say this video is REALLY good and totally blew my expectations (I thought the title was clickbaity...)
I'm not sure how to describe what type of person I am but I'll try:
I hate the books, enjoyed the first four movies, ABSOLUTELY ADORE SORTING THINGS AND PEOPLE INTO HOUSES, and love talking about HP even though the fans (not all, just a lot I come in contact with... including my whole fam :( ) can be pretty condescending when it comes to opinions. I have always been disinterested in what J.K. had to say outside of the books since the series was done (I'm in the death of the author group) but became very opposed to her opinions when I'd been on pottermore for a while and it became apparent that her view of how things were was soooo detached from what she had actually written.
Draco's problems were written from a well seeded indoctrination and he grew out of them, it drives me insane reading articles about how draco can't change.... HE ALREADY DID....

  • @HaleyCraigers
    @HaleyCraigers 5 лет назад +26

I was there for all of it. And while I still love JK and appreciate what she has done, I don't think I can ever take her as seriously as I used to after all her statements about Draco. Refusing to believe or even explore that he could be good or have a redemption arc is just plain childish to me. Very much like her "wish fulfillment" with Ron and Hermione I feel like Draco is the same. She doesn't WANT him to be good or have another layer. Maybe like Hermione, Draco represents someone in her life she doesn't think deserves a redemption. To me, that's just wrong. I have loved Draco from the first book and was always looking out for his moment. It even seemed to be moving that way in the sixth book... but it never came. It's wasted potential to add depth and make a statement about who you can move away from prejudices and hate EVEN IF it's your family who are the one's who are wrong. Having him break from the death eaters would have been SUCH a powerful statement. I am not trying to say that Harry and him needed to be besties or anything either. Just that he would see the light. Although, I have always been a STRONG Luna x Draco shipper. Light + Dark = teaching the dark to see happiness. It would be amazing.

No relationship is ever perfect, and I honestly think the active acknowledgement of that as it applies to Ron and Hermione adds a level of depth and maturity to a relationship some might consider simple "wish-fulfillment".

JK Rowling has said a lot of things after her canon for the original Harry Potter has ended. I think it’s a good thing but she really should think about how it will be received. Will there be a pointless negative reaction or one founded in genuine concerns? I think lately she’s been writing off the people who have negative things to say but do so in constructive ways.
But here’s a list of my Harry Potter ships, I LOVE talking about them:
    Seamus x Dean (my favorite)
    Draco x Harry
    Ron x Hermione
    Neville x Luna
    Ginny x Luna
    Percy x Oliver
    Cho x Cedric
    Blaise x Pansy
    Bill x Fleur
    Scorpius x Albus
    Teddy x Victoire
    Teddy x James Sirius
    Sirius x Remus
    James x Lily
    Severus x Lily
    Molly x Arthur
    Harry x Cedric
    Harry x Neville
    George x Hermione
    Krum x Hermione
    Newt x Credence
    Newt x Tina
    Jacob x Queenie

I am a huge Harry Potter fan though I wonder if this statement should now be written in the past tense courtesy J.K. Rowling. There was a time when she could do no wrong but ever since the two controversies surrounding The Crimes of Grindelwald I have completely disassociated from her and her additions to the HP canon and now more than ever look back at the original seven books as the base and everything canon though I genuinely liked Cursed Child but I feel it will be easier to draw the line at the seven books and just continue shipping Scorbus regardless of if CC is canon or not. Though I feel like if JKR ever explicitly states that Scorbus is not canon that will be the final schism and bye-bye to all things JKR, I'll keep the books the author might as well be dead.
I truly agree that the time she stated that Ron and Hermione might not work out was the point at which things really took a turn for the worse and other things just compounded my belief that JKR should step away if she wants the HP fandom to exist as a fun place, because her constant manipulation of it is making things worse and for once I can truly see the advantage of authors stepping away from their published works because they need to at some time and it is always better to quit while you are ahead but JKR might seriously have lost that headstart.
I personally liked HarryxHermione as a pair and I truly felt they should have ended up together but more because I didn't like HarryxGinny than any hatred for RonxHermione. In fact, without realising it I had already developed quite strong feelings for Ron and Hermione that while weren't obvious to me as a teenager when JKR statements regarding the couple come out made me very aware of them. At that point I really didn't care who Harry ended up with, it was just crucial for me that Ron and Hermione be together. They are a cliched couple but I feel like they were "the couple" of the entire book series and in hindsight, they had so many moments that indicated their later canonicity. I in some ways also feel that she went back on her statements regarding Ron and Hermione with her approval of CC as canon because in some ways it felt that despite JKR not wanting Ron and Hermione together and not thinking that they would work out they did which in the face of her position in the HP fandom seems very powerful. Unknowingly, however, the damage that her disavowment of Ron and Hermione had done could not be repaired.
I have now kind of disassociated with JKR's views on the HP universe and it has become really clear that I view HP very differently from her and therefore I no longer need to take statements made by her after the fact as gospel truth and can choose to reject them based on my understanding of the seven books.
It is true that her statements have a bigger impact especially when it comes to shipping because having someone as the author say that your ship could be a serious contender can mean the world but more often than not in the case of HP approving of one ships hurts other ships forces people who haven't favoured a side to pick one even if only for themselves as was the case for me. I have become an ardent supporter for Ron and Hermione but that seems to be the only good her statements seem to have done.
Also, could you please to a video on RonxHermione because this list really had me pumped about these two?

So, I started off reading the first book and shipping Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione. It just felt natural to me for the first 2 book that these ships should be together.
And than book 3 cam along ,and that was the book that sold me on Hermione/Harry, and there was no going back from there. Book 4 with Ron and Hermione's silly argument at the yule ball and Harry being god-smacked at how pretty she was just solidified them as being the better fit. Book 5 had Harry panicking over the thought of losing Hermione while Ron was swaying around with some brains in a jar at the Ministry of Magic, and I was never more convinced that it was going to be Harry/Hermione...
And than book 6 happened... and I really wanted to give Harry and Ginny a chance, but they had nothing. All they had was Harry pining after Ginny, and than a few paragraphs of them supposedly being happy than Harry breaks off with her. He goes to Death Hallows with Hermione while Ron rushes out of there like a freaking cowards which just made him unbearable to me as a character. So by the end of book 7 Ginny/Harry and Ron/Hermione were dead to me and a horrible mistake on Rowllin's part.
Which does not mean I was happy when she admitted Harry and Hermione were the better ship. The Happy Weaselly Family is still cannon no matter what she says after the books have already ended. I firmly believe the canon couples failed on her writing. She should have made Ginny go with the trio. It should have been Ginny with Harry in Deathly Hallow visiting his parent's grave, and Ron should have stuck by Hermione and made her happy. And than maybe I would have liked the canon couples. But as it stands, trying to validate a ship after the fact leaves me cold.

I really enjoyed this video, and I remember most of these controversies. I didn't really have an online involvement with it but of course it was a hot topic amongst my friends at the time. I'm going to withhold my judgement on the Grindeldore ship in the FB franchise, since there are 3 movies to go, but I will be very disappointed if they avoid it altogether. As it stands, it's looking much more like queerbaiting than anything else, given the plausible deniability of the Mirror of Erised scene leading back to some blood oath that logically doesn't make sense for Dumbledore and Grindelwald to have made.
Seriously though, I do want to know what your ships are. You give really unbiased essay-style videos - which are excellent quality - but I think given the level of understanding of the fandom you have, it would be just as interesting if not more so to see videos in which you talk about what your ships are and why, especially if you can recommend some really good fanfiction associated with them. You'd probably convert a fair few people with this platform.
Also, do you think you could make a video on the Draco/Ginny ship? It would be a genuinely interesting history lesson, given that it was largely popularised by Cassandra Claire, who wrote one of the most famous fanfics in fandom history and is I believe also credited with the birth of the Draco in Leather Pants trope. And since The Mortal Instruments characters have some not-so-subtle commonalities with Draco and Ginny from her fanfic, sometimes watching Shadowhunters can be a real throwback to many of the Draco Trilogy scenes and themes. Thanks for all you do!

I think as soon as the works are finished an author can add what they thought when writing but it doesn’t have any more or less ground than a head canon. When you release your work you give it up to the reader’s mind and for each going to perceive the story it’s going to mean something different and that I think you are going to have to accept. Just because you wrote it doesn’t mean your ideas of the characters are any more right than what readers take from your source material.

  • @meejjj.
    @meejjj. 5 лет назад +3

I honestly love Rowling's involvement with the fans, fandom, and actors of the movies, but I do feel that there comes a time when the creator has to step back and admire their work from afar. Just look at it real hard and let it sink in that this is what was created and not something else. That all those underlying plots are just subtext and are simply white noise. That everything has already been settled and there's no going back. That you can't just look at something, realize it doesn't fit, and say something in addition, as if you were correcting yourself.
This whole thing isn't only causing an uproar with the fandom, but an internal war with herself. You can see that she's fighting for authority with her own fans and I believe she should just let the fandom have their way with her work since she's done with it. Sure there's more movies, but let the fandom take their own path in finding joy and comfort in the stories she's finished with.
It isn't just a matter of fact vs fiction, but it's a matter of pride. Rowling refuses to step down and away from the fandom and grips onto it like a vice. She cannot let go of the story and desperately clings onto it as if it were a father leaving his child in the dead of night. Rowling needs to understand that all she can do now is clarify the subjects already presented in the story, she needs to understand that she can't keep contradicting herself and adding in information in every interview possible.
All in all, Rowling has a bad case of not letting the past be. Clearing the fog and adding more fog are two completely different concepts that she needs to grasp on to more than she's grasping on to an already finished (part of the) story.

I'm in the camp of "Rowling needs to shut up now" and firmly believe, since the first Dumbledore is gay comment, that it's all just a desperate ploy to stay relevant in an ever changing world. The world wants more diversity and inclusion, which she realized HP was lacking in, so Word of God's the shit out it to course correct without ever noticing that the boat docked in harbor years ago.
The fandom doesn't need her to sustain it. The story doesn't either. It belongs to the fans now and anything she does to reclaim it will only piss of a good chunk of them. Better to just sit down, shut up and let shippers ship. Any question asked about world building or character development should be met with, "It is whatever you want it to be". Basically, leave things open to individual interpretations.
But then again, I'm not really a fan of the actual series. It's potential was great, but the actual writing was pretty mediocre. And I hated Harry himself by the end because he went from an underdog to a christ savior who never had agency over his own actions or fate. I hate that shit.

Saw some of the films, did not watched the last two. did not read the books. But I kinda think they should cut JK some slack not much creators interact and even voice some more ideas that could be consider 'draft ideas' like the Harry x Hermoine moment. much like Musicians answered how they were feeling on the song upon writing it and who is it for she should do too hell some even decide to be secret because of that much like the Death Note creator, but can be understandable she needs to step away from the work. People sometimes are to sensitive on things or better yet do not ask questions at all. and for the Ron x Hermoine felt it that it will not work without even seeing the announcement. they do not match to me either but I can't lie they do look adorable and some help does not seem bad every relationships has its problems sometimes bigger than others and the trio was an obvious love triangle from the get go so there is that in those 'shipping goggles'.
the Draco Malfoy drama, I too seem to get the depth of the character. people in the environment he is raised in would eventually get second thoughts, but there is something that some people do not want to be saved no matter if they are moments that they seem they so want to be saved from the darkness they fell in.'do not save people who do not want to be saved' and Draco is that and that could be what she sees too, but I also see he has potential for redeeming since is quite a challenge to bring a character that has fallen deep from grace to be back to the light and people love challenges.
Wolfstar never thought of the pairing and yeah I see it cute too and im in the bandwagon of should off been canon. Dumbledore and Grindelwald can't really say but that should be interesting indeed to see no matter how it unfolds. at least explore the aspect of the one sided and that could be what she was referring to and you know even when lgbt community is always there it is still relatively new on public on some people that hints need to be giving. and not all people are the same either some guard secrets like Dumbledore does so that might be reason not in the books and an answer of the question when she interacted with fans.

I was never a big fan of Ronmione, even though it was obvious pretty early on that that was were JK was heading. But Ron and Hermione never really clicked for me, especially as a future relationship. Like, I could see them as a couple in their teenage years or for a while even after the war. But their marriage and the happenings in Cursed Child is very OOC for Hermione imo. Don't get me even started on Cursed Child in general lmao. I was always a big Harrmione or Dramione shipper. Dramione being more of a guilty pleasure and not so much realistic future relationship. Even though there have been very well written redemption arks for Draco by fans which I think are pretty well done, because they chose a realistic approach. But, considering the abuse he put her through, I think it would take a lot of time, even decades and both of them to actively working on overcoming the past to be a healthy relationship. Even though I absolutely love Draco and love Dramione and I'm also one of the fans thinking that his character had a lot of depths. Considering Ron and Harry, I think there could've been a potential for a romantic relationship, but JKR always only writes heterosexual relationship and they all. marry. It's like, in her world, there are no queer relationship and also no other ways of living/having a relationship without engaging in marriage.
If JKR saw the problems within Romione and the way, Hermione would need/expect more from a relationship when she's an adult, I wonder why she didn't explore that in Cursed Child, instead of turning it into this misogynistic character downplay that it really was.
Considering that there's literally no represented LGBTQ+ relationship in the book (not even Grindeldore bc they were confirmed afterwards) - I think JKR is at least a bit homophobic, in a way that she doesn't actually educates herself on writing a queer character and rather just not writes it and says afterwards that it was always there, even though there's no actual representation of it. And I mean, she does that all the time, lol. But she had/has the chance to write it in Fantastic Beasts, but she chose not to, while simultaneously pretending it's there.

I don't like how people get mad at the author. She could be leaving some things unanswered to give people to believe the way they want to. You don't want to describe every little detail, but leave the artistic ability to the reader.

first, not harry potter related but would consider doing teen titans ships? & tbh if you ever want to have a fanversation on it hmu bc tbh teen titans is my LIFE, specially flinx
tbh when it comes to jk and the fans, I think it's a little bit of both honestly? to be, it's very much her thing, y'know? if she wants to talk about hcs or even things that she decided against or whatever I think it's fine, it's her prerogative, but I do think that there should be a bit of distance when it comes to things life, " oh this happened but it wasn't on screen or said in the books or whatever ". tbh, i'm not gonna lie i'm very meh on the whole thing simply bc it seems like either ways she's damned if she does & she's damned if she doesn't.

My mum and grandma both read the books as they came out, my gran even has a first American addition of the first book she bought at an airport back in the day. They both love the series and kept up to date with these sorts of changes. My grandma was furious when she heard that Hermione almost ended up with Harry because she loved her with Ron so much hahaha

when it comes to harmione and her thoughts on it i think that she makes valid points. its like the boy who cried wolf. she cried wolf so many times so that when she may make a valid statement no one can take it seriously. though to be honest my OTP will always be lunarry. :)

It might be interesting to see a top list of disappointing ships (how the ships were handled and it's pushback not the characters themselves) different series of course.
