I know you probably won't see this comment since you're inactive on RUclips now, but I just wanted to say thank you. Your channel was one of the reasons I originally picked up NieR Automata, a game that impacted me so deeply that it is, without question, my favorite game. Playing through the original NieR in 2019 was also a fantastic experience and in 2020 I picked up Atelier Ryza due to your enthusiasm for the Atelier series. That game is very special to me as well, and Ryza 2 came out shortly after my grandmother passed away in January of this year, so having that game to distract me from grief was such a wonderful blessing. I'm really grateful to you for making content centered around the games you love. You really added a lot to my life by doing that and I just wanted to let you know it's appreciated. Even if you never post anything again, I'm really thankful for the content you did make and that I can revisit it now. I hope all your current endeavors are going well and that you'll have great success in life. :) Thank you, Valkyrie Aurora! God bless you always! :)

My personnal ranking would be :
    1) A Beautiful Song - sounds like the last words of Simone.Very tragic, a singer's last play before she dies on the scene. And DAMN it feels so smooth during the fight.
    2) Bipolar Nightmare - Love how well it's used in route C, when you're jumping from the perspectives of the frantic anger and hysteria of 9S, and the bitterness and hopefulness of A2. Also the fact that you're fighting Ko-shi and Ro-shi, so Confucius and Laozi, who have opposed philosophies (confucianism and taoism), one saying to follow strict rules, the other to "go with the flow". there's even the black/white opposition pattern (and the yin yang when they fuse together). So the title is very clever in that sense. Love how they played with the duality of that fight.
    3) Song of the Ancients / Atonement - really felt like a last sacrifice for Popola and Devola, and you never go wrong with SotA.
    4) Dependant Weakling - for the same reasons that you said. And because Eve is a good cinammon roll that didn't deserve this shit
    5) Birth of a Wish - every version of it cool as hell and feels like powerful hope. also BEC O M E A S G O D S
    6) Memories of Dust - just love the instrumental and J'Nique Nicole voice. It sounds so good !!
    7) Grandma / Destruction : just. the scene with 9s and the 2B models. god that hurt.
    8) End of the Unknown - Goth loli and shota and semi-nude guys fighting on the dance floor ? sign me up
    9) Amusment Park - LET THE HAPPY ROBOTS PARTY AND BE HAPPY DON'T HURT THEM YOU MONSTER
    10) Copied City - Usually Im not into piano but this one sold me.

      09. Emil Despair
      08. Kaine - Playing as 9S visiting that cave!
      07. Birth of a Wish: Left me shell shocked during the become as gods scenario.
      06. Song of the Ancients
      05. City Ruins - Rays of Light
      04. Peaceful Sleep: Nostalgia for other games :)
      03. A Beautiful Song: Amazing boss fight
      02. End of the Unknown - A Nier:Automata 'Victoria's Secret' fashion show with this playing in the background! Oh and Adam & Even are so slick.
      01. Bipolar Nightmare - Desperation, Struggle, Futility. Yet you keep marching forward. I will never get tired of this.
Overall. I'd add every Nier:Automata soundtrack here. They're all just amazing.

My favourite is "Peaceful Sleep". That song made me put the controller down and just listen to it. I also loved how talking to Anemone added vocals to the song. That voice calmed me so much.
My second favourite is "End of the World". Nier Automata is my first Yoko Taro game, I didn't really know that I had to *sacrifice *that*. After a while, I gave up doing Ending E on my own and accepted the *help*. Boy, when I heard the choir chorus, it felt like everyone is helping me and cheering me on. I have not experienced anything like this from a game.

    My list (Spoiler Alert):
    1) Kaine (Salvation) - cop out since it's from a prior Nier game, but it encapsulates the feelings that 9S had for 2B perfectly. Even better, it played in one of the most beautiful if simplistic stages of the game.
    2) City Ruins (Ray of Light) - same reason as you. Never got tired of it, and always love listening to the song. Whenever I'm mindlessly grinding on a game, I'll play it on a loop.
    3) Amusement Park - it has such a haunting yet beautiful tone to it, and in my opinion was a flawless match for the amusement park in-game.
    4) Song of the Ancients - Devola and Popola deserved better.
    5) Wretched Weaponry - the mechanical sound combined with the vocals made it a pleasant song to listen to while exploring the factory.
    6) Vague Hope (Cold Rain) - I feel like this song was just an amazing song that would've done well at any of the emotional points in the game. Also learning it on piano, so it's that good.
    7) Birth of a Wish - BECOME AS GODS! THIS CANNOT CONTINUE!
    8) Fortress of Lies - I hear this song, and I think of 6O. 6O was too good for this world.
    9) Mourning - It absolutely gave me chills when I finished the quest where you investigate the murder of an android's best friend, and this song came on. I was terrified but mystified by the choir.
    10) Peaceful Sleep - I ACTUALLY fell asleep listening to this song. It's such a restful-sounding song, like a break in the action so you can just kick back and enjoy the scenery.

My favorite is City Ruins Shade version. I think it plays when you’re A2. The vocals changes pitch to represent A2 rather than 2B. It has a bit of a more serious darker heavier tone than the original I remember how serious shit got when that one played.

    • @doodlebugfour7070
      @doodlebugfour7070 6 лет назад +4

It also plays for 9S too after that point in the game, representing how the status quo breaked hard and how lonely 9S must be feeling now that 2B is gone.

  • @WandererRedux
    @WandererRedux 6 лет назад +7

Some solid picks Sophie; it's not easy to narrow down favourites with such stellar competition. There's so many songs that get stuck in your head that you could make a decent argument for nearly any of the songs to be on a person's top ten list.
Some of my personal favourites are:
City Ruins (Shade) - For similar reasons that you liked Rays of Light, but I prefer this version. It brings back memories of when 2B and 9S were still together, which makes it all the sadder that they're not anymore. The naming convention of the two songs is also pretty heart breaking if you find 2B's flight unit...
Forest Kingdom - Gives off a distinct _Ghost in the Shell_ vibe, which is a major win in my books. Just like how the music in _GitS_ gave off an impression of a marriage between machine and man, this song makes me think of a marriage between machines and nature.
Grandma (Destruction) - This is a fantastic remix of the original from Nier. I love the heavy high tempo brass that was used in this version and having to destroy multiple 2B clones as 9S was pretty heart wrenching to do to cap everything off.
Amusement Park - There's a real sense of childhood magic and wonder in the spirited tone of this song, like the machines have created their own version of Disneyland. The area is also one of my favourites in the game visually, so that probably has someething to do with it too.
Birth of a Wish (Become as Gods) - IMO this was the best part of the first playthrough, which is complemented excellently by this tension filled reprisal of an already fantastic song. Escaping the machine cult was such a thrilling ordeal, with their voices echoing in the background to remind you that you were not safe just yet. Also minor tangent, but *fuck* the room where you find the Engine Blade in, fuck it hard 😠.

My favorite song is amusement park. When I started playing the game, I didn't know anything about it, so entering the amusement park for the first time made me extremely uneasy. It was so different from anything up to that point. The song amplified the feeling of unease, because it was beautiful, but haunting at the same time. Hearing it still sends shivers down my spine.

"End of the Unknown" is pretty much Keiichi Okabe taking his raw talent for making awesome Tekken soundtracks and mixing it into Automata. Pretty simple crossover, but it's a nice homage to both games. Speaking of which, let's not forget Yoko Taro having the even brighter idea (or approval) to make the boss fight a 2D side-scroller, much like actual fighters of the genre.

  • @FrizFroz
    @FrizFroz 6 лет назад +6

Vague Hope is my favorite. It was just what I needed after that bleak ending we got in D. The song is split into two verses, one melancholic, the other hopeful but bittersweet. I'd like to think the first half of the song was about coming into terms with tragedy, while the second half captures the will to continue struggling despite the meaninglessness of existence to find the light at the end of the tunnel. It worked beautifully into Ending A too (pretty much a theme of EVERY Nier track really, they always integrate perfectly with the feeling of the moment).

    • @jakeredfern5070

I completely agree, the track and all it’s versions are truly beautiful. Not to mention that the the song managed to peak its head in many of the game’s emotional moments whether it be from some sad side quest or in the main story. It’s simply amazing

I only purchased automata recently and found your channel shortly after. I felt that the music used Automata pulled the tide of battle for my first play through as I thought, “oh yeah this reminds me of dark souls bring it on big fellas” but by the end of my play through I was playing through tears but the orchestral flow allowed me to finish my journey. I’m on the 3rd play-through right now and I can’t shake the emotion off and become desensitised to it unlike other emotional games I’ve played. I’ve never played any of Yako Toros games before automata but I’m looking forward to buying and playing Nier onwards.

10 - Weight of the World:
I really love this song! In my TOP 10, i put it in first but the Japanese Version, for being more "depressed", more "hopeless" - a type of environmental music that i like most and i think that it "talks" more to me.
    9 - Fortress of Lies
Maybe because i didn't used to think too much about this music, but although it has the perfect job to set the tone, i... didn't remember her? Although, when it plays, i always knows to where it's related. I don't know how to explain well.
8 - Song of the Ancients
It's my third favorite music of Automata, i love so much this song and the moment where it plays the lyrics version when we are fighting along side Devola and Popola... It's like... A Big HUG from Taro and Okabe to Us.
    7 - Beaufitul Song
It's in my Second place from my TOP 10 and... This battle is ridiculous! It's my favorite boss battle of all the games that Yoko Taro had made so far, it's a big microcosm of everything he has done: You can see in this battle, elements from Drakengard 1, Drakengard 3, Nier and everything you're going to see in Automata. United to all of that: THE MUSIC! It's a real Opera that has been given it from Okabe to all of us.
6 - End of the Unknow
OMG, this music isn't in my TOP 10 but i really love this SHIT! Fuck, it's so good! I agree and i have the same feeling - it's completetly different from almost everything that this sondtrack gives to the player, it has his rythm, almost feel like... it doesn't belong to that place... but at the same time, "talks" perfectly to the Alien "setting".
    5 - Dependent Weakling
I don't remember this music, honestly. I don't even know how to feel about it... Sorry.
    4 - Bipolar Nightmare
It's not in my TOP 10, but i LOVE THIS SHIT! I made some commentaries throughout the RUclips to give my theory about this song and i'm gonna give you this: The first moment that it plays in the game, it was when 2B and 9S realized that the sea revealed to them a "Golias Class" Machine, the "first" boss from the game that it was in the "demo". In that moment, they're scared and you can feel the anxiety during the battle and the horrible process of defeat that happen to them during that scene. Obviously, this music plays in other parts of the game, during side-quests and only the instrumental version in some minor fights, but, the next time we're going to hear it is when 9S and A2 are climbing the Tower. And during the climb: THEY'RE THE ENEMY. They are the agressive ones, they are climbing the Tower destroying everything in front of them - if we remember right, you can catch the lines of the Machine during the whole process: He's afraid of 9S and A2. The machine is very scared of them and that's why the music (I think it is, at least) is called BIPOLAR NIGHTMARE, it plays in two different instances, when we are afraid and the machines are agressive and then the other way around.
AGAIN: Just a Theory. Some theory that i actually believe.
    3 - Copied City
I... don't remember? I don't know, maybe because i was too focused in Adam... in 9S... Motherfucker, give me back 9S!
    2 - City Ruins
It's in my third place. I ... LOVE SO MUCH! It doesn't get you tired, it sets the ton of the city, the world, the things you're about to do. I don't know, the vocals, the lyrics - which i don't understand, but... fuck! It's so depressed but at the same time, it's so lovely full of hope!
    1 - The Tower
It's not in my Top 10, but also, love it. Specially, it's a music that talks perfectly about how everything is about to ruin. Everything you've done is something false, you don't have any more relevant to this world and the moment which it has been marked on my brain for the rest of my life is the talk between 9S and A2. It's something so... "hopeless" and "okay, i give up. i don't want to be here anymore".
I love your Top 10, i didn't remember some musics, i'm so sorry xD But it's a game which, like i say in some previous comment: Nier has 100 musics and everything is on Top 10 or something like that. Thank you so much for share this with us.

"The Tower" is exactly what the original NieR would have needed. While the "Memory" version of "Shadowlord's Castle" had the same, desperate feeling because of it's faint and slow vocals, the "Roar" version, which plays for most of the dungeon, is too upbeat and sounds just like any other battle songs from the game

It's amazing how good this music alone is, but it becomes even better, when you think about how dynamically the songs are integrated into the gameplay and story!
How vocals join in when you talk to Anemone in the Resistance Camp, or when you talk to Pascal in his village and of course the mindfuck that is "Become as Gods".
Not to mention the amazing returning tracks from the original NIER, like Kaine's theme.
    Automata's Soundtrack is just stellar!

Only thing idve changed is to add war to war as a joint second with the city ruins due to how impactful it is to hear such a juxtaposing version of the peaceful tune youve heard all game. A strong sense of duty to protect this place takes over me, only thing thats effectedly quite so much is persona 3s music change towards its end

I'll disagree with you about being able to put #7 in any other game. It's titled "A Beautiful Song" for the obvious double entendre that it's a beautiful song but is sung by the tortured soul of Simone who was driven mad by desire for Beauty. The song itself carries so much impact not just because it sounds like, as you say, an epic battle, but also because the beautiful vocals and jarring instrumentals come together to embody the sad dichotomy of beauty, frustration, and pain that was within Simone. I don't believe the song carries as much power without its backstory.

I'm a loser who played Automata before the original Nier but when I finished the Gathering Keepsakes quest and heard Kaine Salvation for the first time I was utterly blown away. Even though I had no prior attachment to the song, it still stood out to me as a wonderful piece of music and was honestly the first time a song from a video game had brought me to tears. I understand why you didn't put it on the list since it was written for and primarily used in the previous game, but I hope I'm not the only series newcomer who was captivated by this song.

A lot of the NieR: Automata & NieR soundtracks will always be special to me since I starting playing Automata around the time where extremely desperate, tough times just happened, were happening for awhile. This game gave me so much a sense of hope and hopelessness that I felt I needed.
Like transitioning from Vague Hope’s Cold Rain to Spring Rain
Also, the most important thing to me is that it would always cause such profound frisson unlike no other and gave me life whenever I sang along with it.

I’m late here, but the very first time I heard A Beautiful Song I loved it so much I could not stop listening to it,especially the second half of the song when you can hear Nicole’s deep and powerful voice with the mysterious, ethereal choir in the background. It was so amazing and quite addictive to me. And that’s what makes NieR Automata’s soundtrack so good in my opinion. Emi Evans and J Nique Nicole are such talented, great singers, that it kind of saddens me that they’re often overlooked or don’t get more love. But anyway, I look forward to see what they’ll bring out next! Love this vid, btw.

I'm not a returning fan of the NieR games or Drakengard, but I played Automata. This game tore me to bits at the end of Route C/D. When you explained The Tower and how the song feels, I realized that that was how I felt when I walked in, too. I also put the controller down and started crying, and I cried like a baby because I picked 9S (Ending D) first. As much as I cried and yelled at my TV, the experience is worth it XD
I'm seriously considering getting into Drakengard and the other previous NieR games, just because this was such a beautiful game by itself.

  • @Horochimara

I think one aspect that manages to keep City Ruins fresh (as well as the other Automata songs) is the fact there's like _6 versions_ of most songs: quiet (vocals or no vocals), medium (vocals or no vocals), and dynamic (vocals or no vocals).
City Ruins gets a whopping *24 versions* of its theme, since City Ruins - Shade and City Ruins - Ray of Light play later on in the game and they all have their own quiet/medium/dynamic/vocals variation too! Depending in which area you're in, the game slowly switches to one of the other versions and it keeps things from getting stale.
Just... the amount of love and work put into this sound track is phenomenal!

I'm so happy you have The Tower as your #1! It has such a somber and unnerving vibe, and it shares some similarities with End Of The Unknown with how it uses certain instruments and melodies that sound completely different from anything else in the game.
This entire game's soundtrack is spectacular, and ever since I started playing this game over half a year ago, I have spent so much time just listening it when I can! This has been the longest I've listened to a soundtrack without getting sick of any of the songs!
One of my top favorites is Possessed By Disease. While I think it could've been used better in other parts of the game, it's really grown on me whenever I listened to the soundtrack in my free time. It sounds calm and slow, but also imposing, as if something beyond measure is near. then about a minute in, the entire song flares up, with increased use of instrumentals, and the loud vocal chants that sound nothing like any of the vocals in the game! It has a constant back-and-forth shift with this and just gives off such an intense feel, it's become a song that I just can't stop listening too.

City Ruins definitely tops my list but I was surprised not to see The Dark Colossus Destroys All on here. When Grün appeared with the same motive and urgency as Jack of Hearts in NieR Gestalt, to just wipe you all out in one fell swoop, and brought the same music track with it, wow. That was such an evocative moment. I went through so many emotions as that fight progressed, nostalgia, fear, excitement and relief amongst others. What a powerful piece in both games.
