I loved how well and natural the conversation went. Jim really felt comfortable (not that he isn´t on other intervews / chats) and that felt great as a viewer. Michael Carpenter is also my favorite character. I'm not religious in anyway, and haven't been for a little over a dozen years. That said, Michael reminds me of one amazing man that kind of mentored me when I was a kid. Obviously, I went a different way in terms of my religion but much of my thoughts of how to be a decent person come from him. "I'm not the carpenter that set the standard". chills! Makes me want to believe.
What I love about Michael is he is the kind of Christian that I think Jesus WANTED everyone to be. He has strong values, but he never judges. He lives his values, period. I think Jim once said he wrote Michael as an antidote to the Christian stereotypes he saw in fiction --- the fanatic, the hypocrite, the holier-than-thou judger. And Michael is still quite human as we see in "The Warrior".
@Yongo Bazuk while in general I agree, I think yoy are missing the element that church can be very toxic. People who become part of that kind of culture and get out commonly become people that take some joy in highlighting the bs.
Indeed. I don’t have to agree with someone’s religion or beliefs to find them admirable. Michael is of the utmost character and someone we’d all strive to emulate or see our daughters marry.
@Yongo Bazuk Morals are defined by what one chooses to do, not what one says. I don't expect anyone, Christian or otherwise, not to be an imperfect human with issues and flaws. But I don't find it unrealistic to expect someone who has a particular flaw NOT to loudly judge and condemn others for having that SAME flaw. Self awareness is crucial no matter what your faith.
Mike's Book Reviews I think if my daughter had to be saved from a dragon I'd feel both angry, cuz I'd have failed as a parent cuz she was in that situation, and blessed because such a man as Michael is my Son in Law

Best thing about Butcher? He's just such a great guy. Makes it feel better to enjoy his books. I compare that to Rothfuss, who I feel is a narcissist who just loves to hear himself talk.
Really, both Butcher and Sanderson are fantastic to just watch interact with fans.

I did NOT almost squeal when I heard Butcher admit to being a fan of David Weber. My favorite authors. Knowing Jim is a fan of Honor Harrington made my day.
I would love to find more about Mab's background as far as who she was as a mortal. I loved that she showed some actual emotion in Battle Ground (hopefully it wasn't just another game she's playing).
Easily Mab's best appearance in BG. What a boss.
I love Mabry. I love her depth and complexity. She is supposed to be the evil faerie, but she's actually the hero, right up there with Dresden. She stands between the Outsiders and us.
I'm hyped for the next Cinder Spires. I love that world.
I'm hyped for the series to be finished one day so I can start reading it, don't wanna be in another situation like I'm with Dresden already :p

Mr. Butcher seems so down to earth and real! I only have one book by him, it was given to me by my late sister, best friend, and second mother, Frannie. She loved Jim Butcher's Dresden Files and wanted me to read them with her, I had too much going on at that time, which I now completely regret because as the saying goes, we are not promised tomorrow, nor even the next minute. Thank you so much for this interview! Now I have to save to go and get all of the rest of this series. I only have "Cold Front" , fantastic fun to read. It’s been 7 months. Have you caught up on the series yet? I’m curious what your thoughts are now vs then. It’s one of my top 5 favorite series when averaged out. And one of the very few fiction series that has brought me to tears at various points

Mike, I would like to add my recommendation of David Weber's Honorverse series. A basic description is "Horatio Hornblower in space". A somewhat longer and more detailed description is military sci-fi with battle tactics based on age-of-sail wet navy tactics. The warships in the series operate on physics that limit the 3D aspect of space battles, with the ships being nigh-on invulnerable from above and below, as 17th-century warships were during sea battles. Honorverse warships duke it out through firing broadsides of missiles and various energy weapons, and positioning is important. The most vulnerable aspect of a ship is fore and aft. Port and starboard are somewhat protected, but definitely NOT impervious to incoming fire.
The main character, Honor Harrington, is based on Hornblower (hence the same initials), who is based on Admiral Nelson of the British Navy. One of the main antagonists is named Rob S. Pierre, and if you know anything of European history, that name may seem familiar (think France). Weber is something of an historian, and a LOT of the series has references to real-world history.
If you do go down the Honorverse rabbit hole, I agree with Jim that you should start with the second book, "The Honor of the Queen". The first book, "On Basilisk Station", is a good read, but compared to the rest of the series, is pretty weak. I've only read it twice, out of a total of about 7-8 re-reads of the series. Also be aware that there are about 30-odd Honorverse-related books, between the mainline series, two spinoff series (including one co-written with Eric Flint), a pair of prequel series (one written with Jane Lindskold, the other with Timothy Zahn), and four or five anthologies of stories written by Weber and many other authors.
There's also an Honorverse "companion" book titled "House of Steel", which contains a novella - "I Will Build my House of Steel" - written by Weber, and the rest of the book is background on the history, politics, military, economics, etc. of the Star Kingdom of Manticore, the protagonist faction of the series. This part of the book was written by members of BuNine, of which I am one, and I contributed to the content of the book. BuNine is a group of Honor Harrington fans who got together to help David "fill out" some of the details of the Honorverse that David couldn't easily put in the books, even with his propensity of writing page-long infodumps (sometimes entire chapters). We work directly with David, and anything we write, draw, model, or say, is considered as much canon as anything David writes. Of course, he has final approval, but for the most part, he's happy with the stuff we do. My YT channel has some 3D animation videos of various bits from the Honorverse, and I also have some 3D modeled stuff on my DeviantArt page: www.deviantart.com/maxxqbunine David's descriptions of the warships in the series are difficult to picture, so my artwork might help you to visualize it. BTW, yes, I am aware of what they resemble (rolleyes - tired of someone pointing it out as if I've never heard it before), but that IS David's description of the ships, and the design is based on the physics for the drive system he came up with, and the physics of battle - form follows function, and all that. It's canon, and that's that.
The former head of BuNine, Tom Pope, is also a co-author with Tim Zahn and Weber on that prequel series I mentioned above. We are supposed to be coming out with a second (and third) companion book at some point, but it's been delayed due to some issues with a former BuNine member.
Sorry for the wall of text. I just wanted to give you a bit more detail to see if the series was something you might be interested in.
I read basically the whole series in 3 weeks. And it still feels like I jumped on a speeding train and wound up perfectly in my seat!
I'm honestly convinced that Cinder Spires is a secret backdoor sequel to Codex Alera and we'll find out in a book or 2 that it's based on the same world and the creatures on the surface are the Vord.

Every time I read/listen to Cinder Spires, that goes through my head. There are a lot of connections if you pay attention. The surface creatures, the way the ship interacts with the etherialists, the joke Master Ferris (sp?) makes about Olympians (he's possessed of a Fury, which is funny, if you know your history....") I'm convinced the Spire stone was made with furycraft. It will be interesting to see if we're right or not.

I love to listen how the series come to be again and get any word on the future of his series as much as anyone but it was even better to get some personal questions and a whole lot of books recommendations by him.
I gotta say, regarding “Ghost Story”, while Mr. Marsters will always be the voice of the Dresden Files, John Glover’s voice for Sir Stuart is my favorite of the two.
When I heard “ragamuffin”, I was sold on the character voice.
I’ve not read anything by this author, but I’m gonna start. I have a couple books to go first and then Dresden it is. I’m totally sold. This was a lot of fun
Do yourself a favor and start with fool moon, when you then love the series you can always go back and read storm front, it’s much more satisfying read that way.

Been following this series for many years. Love it. Found it after the one year syfy attempt at it. Read the first book. Loved the way Jim treated TootToot with respect even though he obviously didn't have to. Immediately bought the rest of the books that existed at the time. Also bought other copies of the series and gave them to friends and family.
Two or three of my great uncles ran a restaurant called Pizza Express.
I am so here for Butcher's praise of Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles.

This interview was pure delight. I'm not the sort of fan who geeks out on interviews and the like, but I enjoyed this so much! You and Butcher seem to have good chemistry, and he comes across as a fun and interesting guy. I've been a huge Dresden fan since the first book was published.

D&D tip for Mike; if you struggle to come up with characters other than barbarians, try playing some characters inspired by fiction characters you love. Everyone and their grandma have played Legolas or Drizzt inspired things, but a Michael or Spike are great starting points. A Dune character, one from Faithful and the Fallen .. anything works 😉

I'm going to follow up my tip I've been saying for a while that Alex Verus is the right book to read as a companion in contrast to The Dresden files and I've been getting drowned out by iron druid folks.
Fated. book one. book 11 came out like two months ago and as somebody who drives a big truck I was plowing during this last round of big snow storms and I listened to book 11. It was so cathartic. As I was opening up snow covered roads by pushing in people's driveways who had just run a snow blower and blown all the snow into the road totally blocking it for their neighbors instead of their yard.. listening to this British Magi who was sick to death of the political intrigue and backstabbing of his enemies and just finally saying fuck it! I wanted to restart the series right there and then.
It's a ride Mike. There's one book left and none of them are all that long.

You definitely should. Some people say the first two books were a little slow. Personally, I still think they are good, but he was still a very new writer. For me the best early book was Dead Beat.

The question about whether or not Jim decided to not kill off a character he was prepared to really shed light on the three wizards that Dracule merked. They felt so underlived for their characters and yet it made so much sense for them to die. RIP Yoshimo and Wild Bill, I really would have loved to see more of them!

Skin Games is my favourite of the books.
And I totally cried when they released Peace Talks and Battle Ground. Covid had just shut everything down, I lost my job, I'm the strength for my kids and I was going through a lot if other stuff too. It was something I really needed for me, and ut had been 5 years.

Really great interview! Caught it late unfortunately, but you worried for nothing, it was smooth start to finish. My favorite was when you provided answers to the questions lol hilariously done. Thank you!
I try to pick my characters for their role playing potential. For example, I have a goblin bard that is the embodiment of Gordon Ramsey as a goblin. He's a really talented chef, (he uses cooking as a performance art, all his equipment and spells are flavored toward cooking), and he's really intense. He has a huge chip on his shoulder because nobody respects a goblin in the kitchen.
Mike great interview. Always up to watch any interview with Butcher. If you do decide to read the Monster Hunter series you might want to read Butcher's short story in 'The Monster Hunter Files' short story collection at some point after going through the initial books - some of the other stories might have spoilers but if you just stick to Butcher's take on MHI's janitor you're pretty safe once you've gotten the hang of story world from first book or two. I'd love to see Butcher playing in Correia's sandbox again. If you haven't watched Correia's panel discussion with Butcher, Faith Hunter and other authors talking about the short stories they wrote for the above mentioned book it's worth a watch. I also think his spin off Monster Hunter Memoirs trilogy with John Ringo co-writing is worth reading either after reading the first couple books in the main series or after reading all of the main books either way - I don't think they'd spoil anything after the first MHI book if read before the later books.

D&D: I played a game that lasted 2 years, meeting most weekends. The DM was a rather bad player who was a FANTASTIC GENIUS as a DM, though. His major problem was his bad luck. I mean REALLY bad luck. He would set up a scenario that was almost impossible for us to get out of without major loses, with reinforcements coming that we did not know about ready to cut off our retreat and the like and we would roll our dice and TOTALLY WRECK his plans by getting the ONE AND ONLY DIE ROLL each time that reversed things against his "evil minions". For example, I had a magic user who had, in his pack, a set of small, portable, Mirrors of Life Trapping, that we had acquired in the DM's huge and incredibly badass castle/fortress/dungeon (he created the mirrors without truly understanding what our very sneaky leader would use them for). Inside these mirrors, before we could eventually clear them out for our own nefarious purposes (heh, heh), were all sorts of things, including a number of extremely dangerous monsters (we had no idea how they got into the mirrors and did not care to ask). My magic user had one mirror with a maxed-out Giant Centipede in it (the most powerful non-magic monster in this game). We got into a major battle with a small group of Orcs and were getting the worst of it when my magic user was backed into a corner next to an exit door he was trying to get to by a huge Orc with an axe and it looked like curtains for my magic user. I didn't think straight for a second and remembered the Giant Centipede, pulled out that mirror and smashed it on the head of the Orc.
The DM and everyone else in my party said, "YOU DID WHAT?!!!" The DM laughed and said, "I have you all now, buahhahahaha!" (He was pissed due to our prior die rolls, which made him look a lot like Professor Fate in the great comedy movie THE GREAT RACE.) The centipede made short work of the Orc, of course, and then the DM said it was going to attack my magic user first, kill him, and then work through everyone else it could reach until we either killed it or all died. However, I had a thought that might help us. I asked the DM if the centipede was intelligent. He looked at me strangely and said of course not. So I said then it would jump randomly from its position in front of my magic user. He said, that was reasonable, so he set up a six-sided circle around the centipede and had me roll a 6-sided die to see where it would go. I did and he said, "Aha... Oh crap!" The number I rolled was through that door I was next to, the only place it could jump and not touch me or anyone else in our party. So the DM moved the centipede marker through the door, saying, "Damn, damn, damn!!" I asked him why he was so upset. He said that, "You hear a lot of screams and fighting sounds running rapidly away with the sound of the centipede going with them." I asked what was that and he said it was the rest of the Orc reinforcements that were just coming to finish us off. (He almost banged his head on the table.) I asked if we had anything to worry about from them. He looked at me and said, "Would YOU go through a door a Giant Centipede had just jumped out of?" We were able to win the battle. Like I said, the DM had bad luck...

If your looking for something similar to Mac's Ale your looking for a traditonal English ale, along with either an Abby ale Scotch ale which are meant to be drunk at room temperature. It's hard to pin down but just experiment since we all have a different idea of the flavor in our minds. Also Jim Butcher knows what a good ginger beer is lol!!
