    Wow.. ingenious design on the teardown. I'm super happy you DIDN'T destroy it and just pulled the top off.. Awesome, and those batteries are going to last 10 years minimum if you take care of it - and I know you will as an EE, but yeah those batteries are identical to an 18650 but bigger, and if this thing was designed properly, as it seems to have been, it'll last. Super nice battery pack. I'm a little jealous, I want one!

    Hi, I'm a recent subscriber and enjoy your videos. When you mentioned hurricanes and particularly Ian, you got my attention. I'm a hurricane/typhoon/tropical cyclone forecaster (since 1980). Currently, I live in Houston, TX. After Ike hit in 2008, we were without power for exactly two weeks. At the time I had a very small gas-powered generator that lasted about 1.5 hrs on a small tank of gas. Half-way through the Ike outage, I purchased a 5500W gas generator that runs 11-12 hours on a 7-gal tank. I also had an electrician install a transfer switch next to my electrical panel, so that I can plug the generator directly into the panel. There is a safety feature that requires you to turn off the main breaker so that you don't send power down the line to anyone working on restoring power (among other reasons). Today, the high here in "warm" Houston reached only 30 degrees behind this Arctic front. Such fronts often produce periods of a day or so without power, and without warning.
    That large 120v outlet LOOKS like the same plug that my generator has to go to my transfer switch. I'm not going outside to check now, though. Something like this would be great during an unexpected power outage (unlike a hurricane when you know it's coming). Do you have a transfer switch installed next to your main panel? Something to think about so you won't have to run all those extensions to your Oscal. Just plug it into the transfer switch and use whatever you need to in the whole house (not the AC, of course). it could run a window unit at night, I suppose.
    Looks like they're asking about $1800 for the battery. Not too bad.

    • @ststele
      @ststele  5 месяцев назад

      Hello, thanks for your comment! I have a double-ended cable for connecting our old generator to the house but the house never had the transfer switch installed. I haven’t checked yet but I think it’s the right cable to plug into the thing. Hurricane Ian was the first cyclone since we moved here 5 years ago that made a right turn just after entering the gulf. It hit south of here but it still reshaped this whole area! We usually go to the coast to watch the big storms go by but with Ian it was just too dangerous so we stayed home! This machine should run everything we have except for the big ac and kitchen stove. It might run our hot water heater if we used a big step-up transformer! I haven’t checked the wattage in that heater though. As for the price, it looks like this Oscal is priced at $1700 at half off. I think they’re going to try to sell them for $3400.

    • @chrishebert5672
      @chrishebert5672 5 месяцев назад

      @@ststele I thought the value of $16,688 was the cost, but it's not. That's how much money they've raised. Whew! Yeah, $1798 is more reasonable. That's the price I was thinking. As for the transfer switch, they cost about $200-300 + installation. You can probably do it yourself, since you seem handy. Sure was nice just starting up the generator during the 2021 ice storm power outage and plugging it directly into the house. We could run anything, including the heater, since we have gas heat and the only power needed is for the fan. With a family of 5, though, you have to tell the kids to ONLY turn on something if they really need it, to conserve battery/generator power. That's easy with just my wife and me.

    Greetings from Romania. Welcome to the off-grid community. I have been off-grid for 2 years with a 15Kw battery and 9Kw photovoltaic panels with two 6Kw inverters. Only in winter do I still need to get electricity from the network. The Home Assistant server maintains the connection with over 100 devices in the network, and the service devices even if I don't have internet. The residence of Mistocei.

      Do some research Jason and find out how much solar you receive during a cloudy day so you will always be able to charge the battery for use at night during those power outage times.
      During summer in Melbourne (Oz, not Florida) with 6.6kWh of panels and a 9.8kWh (actually 9kWh because it never discharges below 11%) we are 86% self sufficient and over the year with very cloudy winter days we average 57% self sufficient. Knowing what I know now I would have at least doubled the amount of panels and added a second battery, preferably Tesla two Powerwalls instead of the single LG we have.

    One more comment, but I just wanted to say it's GREAT they designed it to BE SERVICED by the consumer who has the will to pop the top off to clean the fans. That's a great thing, trust.. and also it's wonderful they though of making life a little easier on us with that design. Very well thought out.. I'd give them my money if (or when) I have that kind of cash to put out.. That thing is GREAT for Florida residents.. seriously. I lived in Ft. Myers for a few years and we actually never really had a big storm while I was there but I did own a small generator.. that, that's great for emergencies or just being off grid camping but still having power with you.. I'm a ham so it would be nice to see I could run the full 100w of HF power and have no problems with time.. Very nice!

    thanks for the review video.
    if the power is out you will definitely want to keep the fridge and freezer going.
    as you mentioned, you can also charge it via the gas generator so you dont have to keep the gas gennie going constantly, like at night.
    of course if you invest in solar panels then you can also charge it with that, possibly also run your workstation completely off the sun.
    glad that you are able to make good use out of this power station. please do update us if you decide to retire it or if it is retired due to it stops working.
    it does look interesting, but my experience with indiegogo leaves me with not being interested in investing in this unit.
    imo anything on indiegogo is an investment, as you are not guaranteed to get your product.

      Thanks! I have a generator from the 1970s (or something) but it almost always runs with a little work. It takess a long outage to get me to dig that thing out though because it weights a million pounds and barely puts out 100v with the right amount of cardboard shims behind the adjuster (util the cardboard vibrates out and it goes back to 80v) lol. I'm pretty glad to have this battery powered unit.

    Nice work Jason, great review and really well made product. That things is a beast!! - at 33:25 or so, I'm going to create a scenario that I am POSITIVE will 1000% happen to these people.. someone, a genius, is going to take that power cable that has the input end and the 12v plug end on it and look at that battery pack and think.. huh.. why can't I plug this input end into the side of the battery DC in and plug the 12v plug into the 12v power socket on the front of the battery and make it charge itself? I worked a miserable year in customer service while I was in school many moons ago and those are the kinds of calls I would get.. Like.. yeah sure, of course you can charge the battery with the battery, if it's not working maybe you should return it and try it with a different one, and if that doesn't work, maybe products like this really aren't designed for you! : )

It would be nice to know how much the inverter takes watts per hour because this thing seems a bit too optimistic on its maximum run time. Also with and without all the wifi and Bluetooth on . lol uh o, I didn't even think of that. I'm starting to get old.. oh no! I just realized recently there were tons of new episodes I hadn't seen yet with them being all old. I have a lot of watching to do.

      @@ststele I admire your content brother , I have an electronic repair shop here in Grenada (Caribbean)and I learn a lot from u. Anything u post I support. F these people that want to control your content by telling u to stick to repairing electronics. They got some nerve for free content. Keep doing u brother I love your videos 👍🏽

      I watch your videos for the micro soldering and the techniques you are so skilled at and all of the tools you use. I don't get the other guy who had to resort to using swear words to my comment about sticking to repair videos.
