You really did it Mike :), a great review, I didn't know they had 7664 already. And those 2 x NICs should be perfect as well for daisy chain if needed, thanks once again.
Hi Mike. Thanks for the review. Like you I use ubiquiti and Grandstream. The comments about controllers is bang on. Only issue I have with Grandstream is the mounting. Really cannot use them in a home as it is very difficult to hide the wires where they come out of the ceiling whereas with ubiquiti the wires are hidden.
Have you ever had the problem of the Gwn7664 not broadcasting 2.4ghz? It doesn't broadcast as standalone ssid. It does with dual band but you can't connect to it.
I did not see this characteristic. Using separate SSID names I did not have the issue of separate 2.4 and 5ghz wireless network. I assume you are using the controllers or the app to do this?
@@MikeFaucher I originally set it up with gwn cloud. But then deleted it and factory rest. And then used the built in controller. It could be the firmware. You know how to downgrade?
Hi Mike, Thanks for the hands-on review. Did you have a chance to record the average throughput of the GWN7660 using iperf3? can you share the average Mbits/s? Thanks.
Good question, they are exactly the same which I chose to only post one result. The 7664 can handle more devices but they are both the same per single device. Hope that helps.
I'm trying to access the device management but I can't find the random password. It says in the manual that the username default is "admin" but I don't find the password. your help is highly appreciated.
On the 7660 and 7664 the password is on the label on the base of the unit next the MAC address. (www.grandstream.com/hubfs/Product_Documentation/GWN76xx_Standalone_Guide.pdf) and check on page 4.
Hi Mike. Thanks for the video. It helped me alot. Is it not possible to ad a Nokia WiFi Beacon 3 AP to my current Grandstream Multi Access Point Setup??? I cant see the Nokia in the Grandmaster Master AP.
Thank you, after receiving 7664E successfully sold Unifi 6 AP. Also openSpeedTest on local server shows 980MBps speed for download and upload on android phone or ipad, so technically limitation is ISP and 1GBps port =) .
You mentioned this in this EXCELLENT video ..... Am I crazy or is the only way to upgrade the firmware locally on these GS APs is to login with the MAC and Password, as a Master, then change the FW address, and update/upgrade. Then when done, unit is back to blue. Factory default/reset, back to purple and done. When updating the FW on the Master it does NOT update the slaves automatically unless I was missing a step. Is it me or is that odd? I see no place in the Master GUI to pass newer FW to the slaves.
No, the issue I had was that the second device had a much older firmware and had to be updated separately before being joined to the system. I did not have to reset the whole system, just merely the new device so it would meet the minimum software revision. Under normal conditions, everything would be done at the same and by the controller which is pretty painless. Due to compatibility reasons, the system had to have a minimum firmware level in order to join. It was an exception, not the norm. hope that clears it up.
Love your videos Mike, so much great info. Silly question, can the second LAN port be used to connect a PC or the like to the network? If so, does the PoE need to be turned off in the switch settings or is it autosensing?
I want to use 3 GWN7664 to provide internet for about 1000 users. The 3 access points will connect to a core router. Will the this setup be able to handle upto 1000 devices concurrently?
Each 7664 can handle 750 clients, it your mesh is distributed it should work. You are on the edge and would suggest adding at least one or two. Great question.
Hi I am usign GWN 7660 access point and currently I can't find my ip using GWN Discovery Tool. I tried mac link and it's not working. Now how can I access my control panel?
I am assuming you have it on the same network? Can you tell from your router if the device is being assigned an IP address as that is the best way to hit the controller. If not of that works you may have to do a hard reset and try it again.
Hi Mike. Thanks a lot for your review. I was wondering if any of the GWN7664 ports, can power a device connected to them? or are those ports PoE-In only?
What would you recommend for a simple home mesh system Mike? This looks way to complex & Ive setup access points before but for office & school placements.
You can try the EERO but i have never used one so I can speak from experience. Given that the 7760 or the Unifi Lite average around $130, this is a better choice and cheaper than most Wireless mesh systems. Might be a more learning curve but long term it is better.
Hi Sir, I have 4 access points 7660 One of them master the others slaves Noticed the master provide me full speed while the others slaves very slow & sometimes wifi reached without internet ! Can you help please?
Hi , when we read in details of GWN7660 model mentioned that coverage range can be supported around 175 meter !!! but we all know in Theory maybe !! but But in reality how much can support coverage range ???did you test it ??thnx
Of course this is max range. I tested everything from the same point which was around two walls and approximately 40 ft away. I did however go all around my house as well as outside and got very strong signal. Because of the locations of my Unifi APs, I had to test everything from one spot.
@@Martin-ot7xj Great question but hard to answer, If I had to make a call I would say they are about the same, and the specs actually back that up but it is a bit subjective.
@@MikeFaucher i know that has built in controller and can control. With gwn manager or cloud, but some customer need the hardware with AP can try with another vendor controller or access grandstream for that
Some of this is personal choice but for me, I only want access points that support VLANs so I can take advantage of network segmentation. I personally prefer Unifi Access point as my first choice, but these Grandstream are great devices as well as the TP-Link Amada as they support VLANs. The traditional Asus, Netgear, or D-Link access points are typically less secured as they are not maintained as well and are more single network with no VLAN support..
Great video, thanks! I'm amazed at the number of typos and poor English in Grandstream's UI though... I noticed several of them in your video. What do you think of these Grandstream APs compared to the TP-Link Omada line (like the EAP650)?
I'm looking at Grandstream because Ubiquiti seems to be a company on its way out. Its APs suffer from crippling defects (2.4 gHz sections just inexplicably fail almost daily; see their forum), and its software A. Doesn't run on modern OSes because it depends on an ancient version of Java. B. Isn't even signed, so Mac OS (for example) won't even run it unless you go to the command line and un-quarantine it. A developer account costs $100, Ubiquiti. How amateur-hour can you be? C. Simply doesn't work. Its mobile "discovery" app won't discover an AP that it's four inches away from, and won't connect to it even if you scan its QR code. The PC-based app won't discover Ubiquti's own products on the network... even when the PC is connected to one. D. Their "support" is essentially nonexistent. If you get a response to a question, it will be in the form of single phrases that feign ignorance about oft-reported defects like the one cited above (2.4 gHz network just stops working). This one doesn't exactly look polished either. At 15:17 you note the incorrect firmware-server address, and look at that error message: "Obatin server firmware failed!" Seriously? That's not just misspelled, but it's useless. A proper message would at least have said "Firmware server unreachable" or something to give you a clue.
The Grandstream units are nice using and you will happy with them, but your comments on UniFi sure have been different than what I have been experiencing. They continue to make their software better and add features but it really aimed at running it on a Cloudkey or UDM. I have converted most of my network to UniFi as I am truly impressed with their approach and honestly have not had any serious issues. The dropping issues are possible with legacy hardware but there are easy fixes. I had issues with Elgato lights and Nanoleaf panel but that was addressed with an easy setting fix. To be truthful, UniFi does run better when you a CloudKey or UDM which is one area where Grandstream has the advantage. Thanks for your input and comments and good luck which ever direction you go.

Absolutely.
Are those two ports switched on the APs? So additional devices can be connected to the second port and be part of the same lan?
Yes you connect a non PoE device.
@@MikeFaucher thanks for the answer!
This makes them even more appealing, as I don't have the house centrally wired unfortunately.
Do i need to plug it in power outlet ?
These are powered by PoE+ so you will need a PoE switch or adapter to power these devices.
do this device support POE adapter/injector or it works only with POE switch?
They fully support PoE or PoE+ injectors they just do not come with them.
This vs zyxel line in the same price range ? Like nwa110 oder nwa90 ?
Thanks, I have reached out to them on some other products so I will bring that up as well.
