Dig Dug is my favorite arcade game, but it's undeniably pretty dang weird and disturbing if you think too much about it. It doesn't get less strange when you get into the whole Dig Dug... gamematic? universe where Taizo Hori aka Dig Dug marries (and later divorces) the protagonist of Baraduke and fathers Susumu Hori aka Mr. Driller (a series with its own dark undertones with all the suffocating/crushing children 1000+ meters underground)
Lmao many characters from the NES and Arcade era were probably scary to their opponents. Mario literally squishing you, Pacman and Kirby eating you, etc...
@@WeirdVideoGames It's the best part of this video. I loved Cave of the Word Wizard as a kid, and seeing your review of it was great, but I about spit out what I was drinking when you incorporated it here. I also loved Dig Dug well. lol
I always just got the impression that you're just an exterminator killing monsters that are messing with the land, also I used to think they were just merging through the dirt rather than digging since they didn't leave a trail
1982, an amazing year for arcade games. Donkey Kong Jr., Joust, Robotron 2084, Moon Patrol, Time Pilot, Front Line, Pengo, Gravitar, Frenzy, Bump 'n' Jump, Pepper II, Anteater, Bagman, and many others in addition to this show's own featured games Bubbles, Reactor, QBert, Blue Print, Popeye, and now Dig Dug.
Dig Dug: Digging Strike on the Nintendo DS eventually confirmed that Taizo Hori (the DigDug you've been familiar with the whole time) had exterminated Pookas and Fygars because they threatened tropical islands. And after he started envying his son Susumu from the Mr. Driller series (a spin-off series from Dig Dug), another monster infestation happened to take place and the original Dig Dug set out to destroy those monsters again in hopes of reclaiming his fame. Update: In addition to this, there's apparently an ad for the video game _Dig Dug_ from 1982 from Atari that showed the monsters ravaging the world. ruclips.net/video/W3ZuiVM0nAM/видео.html

5:00 I actually have a theory for that! You see that the dig dug sprite has a blue face, you’d think that’d be his visor, however he also has it on his arms which is impossible, how could dig dug have visor material over his entire arms? That’s where my theory comes in, that isn’t dig dug’s visor, he actually has blue skin because he is an alien creature, and we could just be seeing the characters as small cause of how far the camera is to dug himself, so he’s actually and alien that’s even bigger then a spaceship
Never understood why Pooka was a "bad guy". Fygar was a little intimidating with his fangs and fire breath, but Pooka didn't seem like a bad creature, and in Pac-Man World he's even the first character to be rescued by Pac-Man!
Weird or not, a game about a pyschopath literally rampaging through the Earth for victims and eating entire interstellar vehicles in one bite - all while happy music plays - is pretty goddamn awesome.
Good video! Very funny. I always thought this game was about a guy on a mission to dig up and kill these creatures before they burrow out of the ground and kill everyone above. Then again, I never read any manuals. lol. Just a guess.
Whenever I go to my local pizza place I always play on the arcade machine there and try to get the high score on Dig Dug. They shut off the machine every night so my high score never sticks. Boo.
Haha great video! Reverse Dig Dug , love that lol. This is one of my favorite arcade games of the 80's . . And just like everyone else, always new it was rather brutal with the kills with the pump . . But never thought of Dig Dug being this dude thats just out to do a genocide lol. You're right . . His goal is to just to kill these cute creatures and one is left running for its life in terror of you lol, and then yeah the vegetables are just bonus points, not needed to advance to next level . . . This a was a very fun video, thank you :-)
actually the music tied to your movements is because the sound designer couldn’t get a convincing walking sound so they wrote a little jingle and called it a day.
Interesting that you mention Bomberman early in the video, because in the first two games he dies pretty much the same way as creatures from Dig Dug, but with a sound that's vaguely reminiscent of a nasty fart (or a deflating baloon, whichever you like). Well he doesn't really "dies" since he's a robot, but as a kid I didn't know that - the game is called Bomberman and I took the "man" part literally.
Interesting thing about Space Invaders, the speeding up of the invaders and the music was not intentional. It was a side effect of the programming and hardware. As you kill the invaders, the game has fewer invaders to keep track of, so the game runs faster.
Pacman is super violence in the movie pixels the cars having the names of the ghosts in the colors of the ghost wishes Blinky pinky Inky and Clyde Zelda just cars in the movie
A cool fact is that some parts of the sprites are hollow because the background in dirt is black and your always in in the dirt it looks like its filled in with black btw the Auauau sound is actually the enemies and not dig dug
I don't think I played DigDug as a kid, but I recognized Pooka from somewhere else. He is one of Pac-Man's kidnapped friends in the first Pac-Man World game. I never played Pac-Man World 2, but apparently in that game there are multiple Pooka enemy characters. Maybe Pac-Man found out some dark secret about the Pookas between games. pacman.fandom.com/wiki/Pooka
or it could be that the pookas in pac man world 2 are robots, the pookas in that game are smaller than pac man (unlike the first game), or it could be darker than that, they could be using pooka children to kill pac man
Some later games instrution books call the Pooka's Ground Pidgeons and this game is set in the same time period as the Galaga Series. Yet the Sequel series to this game Mr Driiler where you can play as Dig Dug or his Son is not that futuristic looking.
If you knock two rocks the vegetables show up. The goal is points and killing them lower in the ground gives you more points for some reason. Kill the dragon horizontally for more points. Weird game, but it's fun.
I think when they run away they are attacking a city or something. I thought he was a miner came across animals didn’t have a gun or any other weapon beside a pump.
Well, I guess the whole vegetable thing from the manuals isn't that out of the question, as the Pookas (from what I remember) were based, design-wise, off of tomatoes.
