- Meanwhile, last year’s losing finalists TS Galaxy were also ousted in the quarter-finals by giant killers Magesi 1-0 at Mbombela Stadium. Here are biggest winners and losers from the weekend's action in the quarter-finals, but before we proceed don't forget to like share and subscribe to our channel for more similar information.
1. Winner : Mamelodi Sundowns
After a slow start to the season, Sundowns have bounced back strong to solidify their position at the top of the PSL standings and also book a spot in the Beer Cup quarter-finals. Downs thumped Chiefs 4-0 at FNB Stadium on Saturday with Rayners scoring a brace while Mudau and Shalulile also found the back of the net.
After their heartbreaking defeat in the final of the MTN8 at the hands of Orlando Pirates, Sundowns will be eager to clinch their first domestic trophy of the season.
2. Loser : Nasreddine Nabi
Like some of his predecessors, Kaizer Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi was forced to apologise to the Chiefs supporters after the heavy 4-0 loss to Sundowns. After a promising start to the season which saw Chiefs beat Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu in the Premier Soccer League and also beat SuperSport United 4-0 to reach the second round of the Carling Knockout Cup, Chiefs fans were optimistic ahead of the Downs match.
But they were given a big reality check by Downs and they will now look to pick up the pieces hoping to rediscover their early season form.
3. WINNER: Magesi
Magesi FC continued their impressive start to life in the top flight, as they piled more misery on TS Galaxy, knocking the Rockets out at the quarter-final stage of the Carling Knockout Cup at the Mbombela Stadium on Sunday.
Magesi, who have shocked Soweto giants Pirates and Chiefs, continue their rise in the PSL, kicking out last year’s beaten finalists.
Clinton Larsen, the coach of Magesi, is working his magic with the Limpopo outfit as they are through to the semi-finals of the cup competition.
4. LOSER: Stellenbosch FC
Reigning Carling Knockout Cup champions Stellenbosch FC were eliminated from the competition after going down 1-0 to Marumo Gallants at the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium in Bloemfontein on Sunday. A Siyabulela Shai strike was the only goal of the game as Siwelele Sa Marumo advanced to the next stage of the competition.
The men from the Cape Winelands could count themselves unlucky to leave the game empty-handed as they had the lion’s share of the ball possession but will be unable to defend their title.
5. WINNER: Richard’s Bay
Richards Bay kept their Carling Knockout Cup dream alive after beating Cape Town City 5-4 on penalties to book their place in the semi-finals of the competition. The match ended goalless in regulation time after both sides failed to be clinical in front of goals.
City and Richards Bay came into the Knockout Cup looking to bounce back from their respective defeats in the league midweek but it was the KZN team that got over the line.
