This is a great watch and rewatch. Skinner shows his true colors, smoke gets his permanent nick name. Our girl returns, and Mr Friend shows that homie don’t play. David Duchovny’s crying scene is fantastic, as are all the symbolism in this show. This is X-Files at the night of its powers. And Skinners tale about why he respects Mulder’s willingness to look beyond things he fears is also a banger. Glen Morgan and James Wong are the ace team next to Chris Carter when it comes to the writing in this show.

I always rate this episode in the very best of the whole series. Every performance is just 10/10, especially Skinner's monologue about Vietnam, Scully's dad's monlogue from beyond the grave, and the confrontation between Mulder and Cancer Man ("Don't try and threaten me, Mulder. I've watched presidents die.")
Everyone is having to choose between death/darkness and life/light. It's honestly just beautiful. Mulder, whose motto is "I Want To Believe," is struggling here to believe in his own feelings for Scully and that what she needs from him is just to be present with her, not run around like a maniac and get revenge on whoever abducted her. It's also funny how much he clashes with Melissa and her own brand of spooky beliefs.
Plus, Frohike in a bad suit bringing flowers to Scully in the hospital is just the cutest thing ever.

I have to agree, it was such a great episode! Everyone was performing at their highest level I've seen so far. I feel that everything has started falling into place by now and we are seeing such great and memorable moments. Love it 😀

I can't believe I've watched this show all these years and never realized Skinner has a "Thank you for not smoking sign" in his office but also has an ashtray. That IS weird. LOL

I know it's not the best thing in the world but I loved seeing Mulder so enraged in defense of Scully... And the fact that he chose to be with her and show her how he felt (as Melissa suggested) instead of curing his thirst for revenge means a lot. All the symbolism of the boat, the rope and so on was excellent. Even nurse Owens as her guardian angel.

The "nurse" was an angel, and the angel was Gillian Anderson's daughter who was born during the filming of season two.

This is a great episode, as others have said, you had a wonderful reaction to it. It’s very interesting how an outside thing, Gillian Anderson being pregnant and they had to come up with this whole abduction storyline to cover it up, and it ended up being something that affected the entire rest of the series, it originated an entire long standing storyline. Like if this hadn’t happened the series might have been radically different.

A beautiful and spiritual episode that is so affecting - great scenes with Mulder, Melissa, The Lone Gunmen, Cigarette Man, Skinner and X to boot. And Scully herself of course- having lost two fathers in my lifetime the scene with Scully and her father makes me break down every time i see it. I knew this one would touch your heart, Jules How could it not?? As for X I love Steven Williams' intensity as him - makes his scenes with Mulder really crackle and makes him an incredibly intriguing character just like Deep Throat was but on a different level.

    • @julesreacts

I have to say that I like our Mr Throat much more than Mr X but you are right, he's a very intriguing and great character for Mulder to interact with! We are seeing some great scenes from everyone lately. They are really shining 💜

this one got me so bad too! beyond the spooky, the chemistry of mulder and scully is incredible and undeniable and a real highlight of the show. i also love how the nurse never worked at the hospital - adds a mysterious element, but is somehow also comforting. a guardian angel perhaps? or just a ghost of that hospital? we will never know, and for me that is the beauty of this show. it leaves everything open ended for you to imagine your own ending.

Man, this episode is so good. Not a lot actually happens outside a few scenes like with that stolen blood. It's entirely driven by excellent writing and excellent acting, and it's absolutely riveting. Everything from mulder's discussion with mr friend. His discussion with smoking man. Skinner story from his Vietnam tour. Mulders silent crying. That last scene! It's all so good! More than makes up for the previous episode in my opinion!
Also, you are correct. The next episode is really good. In fact, it's one of my favorite 'monster of the week' episodes in the whole series! Can't wait!

With this episode, there are so many emotions. Great acting from all involved. Skinner reveals more and more of himself and more of his vulnerability. He does believe in Mulder. Scully's sister Melissa (I think there was some discussion at one point of putting her and Mulder together) brings a lot to it, getting Mulder to acknowledge that Scully needed to know how he felt and she needed his strength to fight to live. I love Scully's mom, she's such a warm presence. The Lone Gunman are always great. I love the scene between Scully and her father, as well as the flashback to Scully's childhood in the beginning. One of the reasons that I love this episode is that you really see how much Scully means to Mulder and he feels useless without her. Nurse Owens must have been a good spirit! Lovely reaction, Jules. When you tear up, I tear up!
Now that Scully's back, we're definitely back on The X-Files train!

This episode makes me so emotional. That scene with young Dana and the garter snake haunted me for years after I first saw it The same goes for the boat symbolism and Scully's dad telling her it's not her time yet. Melissa and Scully's mum are wonderful and Mulder's scenes with X and with Cancer Man are so intense. Oh goodness I'm a mess now. Thanks for a great reaction to an amazing episode.

It's interesting to see how different Scully and her sister are. The scientist and the spiritualist. I don't believe in the spiritual myself, but it does seem to bring comfort to people during difficult times.

I love how different they are! Total opposites but I know that Dana would still respect her sister and her beliefs as she does for Mulder.

Great reaction! I knew you’d love this one… it’s so emotional, has so many great moments, and there’s real character growth as a result. You get to meet Dana’s sister too. I love the fact that she gets through to Mulder and he chooses to be with Scully, in what could be her last moments of life, rather than indulge his desire for revenge. As for Mr. X, you have to remember he knows what happened to his predecessor and is not willing to take too many chances. Also you see the first big confrontation between Mulder and the Smoking man! He’s a terrific and fascinating villain.

    • @julesreacts

That's true about Mr X. He doesn't want to end up like Mr Throat... understandable but I find him a bit grumpy 😂

15:16 its odd that even though Mulder was at logger heads with Melissa. Melissa was more open to believing the paranormal. Strangely enough the writers thought of bringing the character back to have a relationship with Mulder to make some tension with Dana but they decided to veto the idea.

  • @quimeymalen
    @quimeymalen 2 года назад

Although Scully at the moment says she doesn't remember anything of what happened, I think it is evident that this experience of being between life and death was something significant so it did have a certain impact on her memory but from the spiritual aspect, beyond that she can't explain it... This is shown when she tells Mulder "I had the strength of your beliefs", which means she heard it while she was in a coma because it was EXACTLY what he told her.
Another nice touch was when Margaret says "Hello Fox" and Scully corrects her by saying "not Fox, Mulder", which was the same thing Melissa said Dana told her but through their spiritual connection. It was kinda funny how Mulder reacted to that because he believed that Scully had actually spoken, my poor baby had put all his beliefs aside, along with his hopes. Good thing he got them back in the end, when Scully woke up, which is another excellent metaphor.

I've sobbed by the end of this episode on all my watch throughs(because Scully is my favorite character), the direction and storyline and the acting is SOOO good. Despite the the annoying crystal peddling sister, everything else is perfect. I HATE "Mr.X" as well, one of the worst characters. Deepthroat was kind of annoying but a more likable character. X is just an ass.
This is also the episode where Skinner can be seen clearly coming to Mulder/Scully's side of the fight.

Ah, agony....in the midst of family foibles, with the heat turned too high, I miss-clicked, and, once again, my original words are into the black.🥲..so again...an imperfect construct...
    Great episode, Jules😊
Let me first say, I love Dana's family. They all serve to illustrate how Scully became the skeptical, supportive, scientist we know today.
Every time I see this episode, it is almost as moving as the very first time, and almost as moving as your first is now. 😊
This episode is one of the best in the series. It bursts with expanded characterizations of the main players, as well as a blossoming of themes to a higher level, sending shoots out in many directions.
A classic episode, well written, designed, and filmed, plus, your reaction, which only adds to the perfect package.. 💜

I love the difference between Scully and her sister! They couldn't be more opposite yet they love each other very deeply. They have such a wonderful family. It's so sad they lost their dad 😔 thank goodness they didn't lose Scully too!
I've been loving the storyline of the abduction and then the return. I've watched the next 2 episodes and I'm still waiting for more info from Scully 🤭 I'm always so nosy and wanting more back story 😂

This is such a good episode. Lots of emotions and all the important players in one episode. It's difficult to not shed a tear or two. This show is often very stressful, because one feels for the main characters and one never knows who to trust. Mister X is really not very likable, is he? Let's hope that he is of some use to Mulder and Scully.
