Big Botswana Baecation, Pt 6: Nxai Pan National Park - Floods and Baines' Baobabs (Overlanding)

- Overlanding Travel in Botswana - a camping road trip.
Well, if you plan on travelling in Botswana during the rainy season, it's only a matter of time before you get some sort of massive downpour. And literally as we drive into Nxai Pans National Park, the rain arrives properly. Once we finally get past an angry elephant bull, we arrive to an extremely flooded South Camp. Almost all the campsites are completely submerged. But we're in luck. Planning and foresight has us in just the right campsite.
It does mean, though, that we're just in time to miss the animals, but considering our extensive and impressive animals sightings throughout Botswana thus far, we can't feel too aggrieved.
And despite all the rains, we still have something quite impressive to look forward to - the famous Baines' Baobabs. But to reach them, we have to cross quite an expanse of wet salt pans. A little bit of deja vu? Some!

Great to see Bains in the wet! Stayed in the height of summer at campsite 2 between the two trees, beautiful and remote but got swarmed by bees and had to run on to the pans to escape. Had to wait for sunset to return to the car / campsite and light a fire for bees to go away, wonderful memory and still cant wait to go back!
Sounds lke quite and adventure 😄 We enjoyed the feeling of remoteness at the campsite. We should have stayed longer. Next time it will be for a couple of nights.

Very enjoyable video. I love Nxai Pan but I've never seen it as wet as that!
Thanks. Going in the rainy season is a gamble, we were lucky! Most campsites were completely flooded. We must do a dry season trip to the pans, both our trips have been in the rain.

The dash cover we have is from Escape Gear, but there are various other brands too. You can find them online. It's very convenient to have.

At what time in the video?
To what extent do you commit to advance campsite bookings or do you prefer to book on the fly and at what percentage?
We try to do all our bookings in advance. The only trip where booked on arrival was in Zimbabwe, and that was mainly because we had difficulty getting the bookings in advance at the national parks. That worked pretty well. For the popular SA, Botswana, and Namibia camp sites, it's essential to book during peak season.
What month did you visit Nxai?
We were there at the very end of December.
