Cool! I've been seriously grinding my alt-picking chops, as it seems economy picking actually developed quite naturally for me, thanks to some great in-person lessons from a local shred luthier :D Any breakdown of EJ technique/playing is always great and appreciated, some of the solos on Ah Via and Venus Isle are still unmatched for me... I've been slightly fascinated by how he will play different modes of minor/maj pent to get his elusive sound. (rather than just E min pent over an E7 for example) Like if you play an open E drone, but play B minor pent over that, it's very different sounding. I keep seeing talk of "hexatonic scales" in discussion of EJ but really I think that's his little trick to the approach. Jeff Beck did similar things playing modal pentatonics. You always have additional notes from the root maj/min pent or mode a chord is emphasizing, but restricting to just 5 notes is never a bad idea :D
