Rocket League season 3 began just under a year after Rocket League's release. So although many do consider it to be the worst season, it's pretty hard to blame Psyonix for it. They were just a small indie company at the time and were massively overwhelmed by the amount of popularity their game had received during their first year. With little to no experience in balancing the population of a ranked system, there definitely needed to be some experimenting done. And at this point, I think it's safe to say that the mistakes Psyonix had made with Rocket League's rank system back then have now been the benefit of the much more balanced rank system we have today.

Hi Wayton, I was c2 before f2p, I improved a lot but was put down to c1 with the new distribution. Was just frustrating af. I improved more and now with their rank distribution I „jumped from high C1 to c3“, where in fact I just climbed 2 divisions from before season 1. This time it’s not like in og season 3

@@PRIMEVAL543 Same experience. I was high C2 in Season 14 and they placed me in.... D2 in F2P S1. Dropped 300 MMR for no reason. F2P S3 has me back in C2 (though still 100 MMR below where I was in S14). They essentially massively screwed up the F2P S1 reset. Or maybe they only did it to people named Chris.

Yeah this. I feel like if you place into, say, plat. You should get the bronze and silver rewards for free. Diamond would get bronze, silver, and gold. Champ would follow the same pattern and so on. Basically, you have to play through the rank below yours, then yours, then any new ranks you promote into for your final rewards. I have something like 70 hours on the season and only now got my diamond rewards.
@@DigitalJedi I agree with this. Getting placed in GC1 and having to grind from Bronze is unbelievably boring and tedious. Makes no sense at all, I got placed in GC1, I'm clearly not a Diamond, let alone a goddamn Bronze...
But I think that only getting a rank shouldn't be all u need to do to get ur rewards, u shud also have to play a decent amount, I think it's fine for the most part, 80 wins in 3 months to get SSL rewards isn't that hard, granted u are an SSL

@@realjoshuaW I don't only play comp. Most of my time in the game is spent in freeplay, private matches, and doing modded stuff with friends. To answer your question though, my queues are about 5-10 minutes long.
Just want to say all of bronze now has less players than SSL, we don't need to inflate the ranks, we need to lower them globally. Bronze deserves to exist, and it shouldn't be an embarrassment
Yeah, I remember being bronze for like the first 30 hours or so. That is where you belong. The lack of skill you have at the start perfectly reflects the bronze feel. Now it's like you complete the tutorial and bam, you get silver. Practice a tiny amount and you're gold. Then get a little bit better or play smarter and you're at plat forever until your mechanics are good enough for diamond. I think starting the game now would give a lot less satisfaction from ranking up at the lower end.

@@dominickwest7558 I was in plat at that point and way overranked in terms of mechanics but managed to hold on by positioning well. I think around the middle ranks (plat) its around the same as it used to be.

Since I continue to fail to reach my peak from Season 14, when I hit GC through a lot of grind, I am generally happy about being placed higher now.
Last season I struggled to even stay in Champion, whilst my mechanics are continually improving and are better now than they have ever been.

Maybe that is actually the reason why these changes were made. A lot of people lost their ranks and Champs were stuck in Diamond and GCs were stuck in Champ. Weird that almost nobody is discussing it.
@@drakey6617 that is 100% the reason man, because it wasnt just me n this dude, there’s thousands of us that went through it, they had made it easier for lower ranked players to get placed higher when S1 came. It ruined the higher ranks.
It was so frustrating queuing for a game and not knowing whether you were gonna get teammates in C1-C2 that shouldnt be in champ at all or people who should already be in GC. The last 2 seasons were the first time i was struggling in low champ in almost 4-5 seasons, i had been in C3 for the longest time and to go from that to Diamond 2 and struggling killed my motivation to keep playing
@@drakey6617 recently ive been feeling like GC is being swarmed with people that shouldnt be there. (im GC2 myself) but i had a break a while back and i play for fun now, but it feels like if i slip slightly below 1600 the games become exponentially worse

They keep losing players because the game is run by devs that never play their game, and then they wonder why they keep losing so many players each much.

In old season 3 I was Challenger, in season 4 I remember the hard reset, it was impossible to win a single game and after the placements matches I was bronze 1

Honestly I kinda like the season resets because sometimes it feels like youre improving but you are being held back by teammates. So it helps put into perspective what Im at. If I rank in the same thing then maybe I need to practice harder or sometimes I rank higher and it ends up being a more fun and challenging games

To me ranked inflation happened again when rocket league season 1 came about again I was spending weeks and finally hit plat 1 then when that season came about I won 3 placement matches and got plat 3 div 4 in every section even my trash friend who couldn't even hit the ball hit plat it didn't feel rewarding so I haven't played since
yeah they really messed up with the placement matches by putting people way to far up the ranks. Bronze should be a rank, right now its like bottom 0.5% of players
this season has been chaos for me. plat 3 was my highest last season, this season, i've went between plat 2 and diamond 3 multiple times over the same day, multiple days in a row. was hyped about nearly getting champ before i realized that i've been playing with like, 40% unranked players. and seeing +15 to mmr on a win against 2 plat 1s. not even sure why i was matched against them. this has been a very, very strange season. at least i can say i've found the hitbox i'm comfortable with now though.

I can agree with a lot of this, but honestly I’d love to see another hard reset. People are always going to be in ranks they don’t deserve or ranks too low, but I think it’s been way too long for there not to be a hard reset at this point.

The rank recalibration has hit me hard this most recent reset. I spent my first 900 hours grinding from bronze 2 (my actual first rank) to diamond 1. I was thrown into upper D3 after winning 9 of my placement matches in 3v3. I held my own for a while in there and even made 2 videos where I began the grind to champ 1. Champ 1 was my 1000 hour goal. I was handed a free skip to the end of my journey.
Unfortunately the reality of my skill hit hard and I lost 17 games in a row in 3v3, across about 1 week of ranked grind. This sent me from Diamond 3 div 4 to Diamond 2 div 2, where I still sit as I take a step back from the game and reevaluate how I'm playing.
I'm just still wondering how the hell to get back out of plat at 1k hours..
I feel like a game like clash royale does a pretty good job of resets. Its not quite a hard reset, but it can feel like one, whilst still keeping players with wildly different skill levels apart. They take the trophies or mmr and seem to add a percentage of that to a base, but this is only done with the players in the top tier of the game, so that the base "mmr" is high enough for them to push up arenas quickly.
I remember during the season 1 and 2 players in champ lobbies were pissed of because we all get a rank lower than before. I felt like psyonix just made us all lose 1 rank and i had the worst rank i ever had in like 5 months. I'm perfectly the type of player you mentionned in your video i have 1100h of rocket league and i hit gc this season. However i feel like i improved a lot and this mmr rebalancing show us the rank we should have without the mmr we lost because of the 2 previous seasons. When it was the last season before f2p i was easily champ3, after i stucked in champ 2.
So i'm happy with these rank changes because the rank up tp gc was still a challenge that i achieved.

So my personal opinion is that it helped in a positive way but it has its cons as well. In season 14 I was only 1 or 2 games off of GC. Once the reset happened in Season 15(Season 1) i did my placements, won 7 of the 10 of them and got placed Diamond 2, i had been struggling for the past 2 seasons to try and get back up to C3 and it was t until this season that i finally have gotten all my ranks back to where I was in Season 14, and I understand it sucks for people who were already there, but there’s thousands of us that went through the same thing i did and it has helped tremendously.

Its easier for me to rank up to diamond and I hate it. I dont have the level close to champ and I also have to play with guys that are clearly not prepared for Plat-Diamond. Rank resets are the worse.

Season 4 F2P is my first season in Rocket League, so I didn't actually experience any rank reset so far, but now your video actually left me craving for a hard reset, the chaos must be awesome!

My main problem with this season is me, a ~400 mmr and a similar ranked friend, will be against 400 and 700 mmr players. We get ceiling shot on in gold because we are against "unranked" plats/diamonds.
In my first placement game in season 4, I got placed with bronze 1 players and scored 16 goals and got 2790 points.

That explains why I jumped from diamond 3 to champ 1 so easy... Kinda makes me feel bad tbh. Got my champ rewards but now I don't feel so great about them anymore...
My own opinion is that the ranks are cool as they are, the seasons just need to be longer than 3 or 4 months. Closer to 5 or 6 months consistantly.
Idk about anyone else but I feel like with everyone being boosted I keep getting super inconsistent teammates. I'm by no means a perfect teammate but I feel like some players are getting boosted from gold or low plat to D2 and have no game sense or mechanics and then other games I have a really solid teammate

I learned this season that resets don't really even do much... finished last season at silver 3 in dropshot because I never play it. Won 8/10 placements and still got placed as silver 3. In 2s, however, I finished last season as gold 3, won like 5 or 6 of my placements and ended up barely plat 1, which would've been gold 3 last season. So I don't really even know what the point is.
I mean, just try to hit ssl :P GC isn't the highest rank in game anymore.
This season recalibration feels right to me. We're pretty much back to s14 ranks, the last seasons were a pain for me

I'm still flaming Season 3 Grand Champs. And a lot of them I encounter in my high diamond lobbies are there for a reason. I mean I've never gotten the title. Remembering back on S3, it's exactly when I had a big surgery and was bedridden for about half a year. So I only got back to playing RL seriously in like late january of 2017 and then it was already too late for me to really get into the grind again. I've been Bronze in S1, Prospect in S2 and subsequently, because I wasn't able to train for so long, also Prospect in S3. If I had the time I definitely could've gotten to GC back then, too. 9 months definitely would've been enough. But I was just happy that I didn't miss the season completely and I even got any season rewards back then. Could've easily missed out on the whole season if it would've been a normal length one like the two before. I mean I've been playing RL since 2 weeks after release, so I've experienced the game before real competitive Rocket League was even a thing. But yeah, I'm still shitting on most S3 GCs I encounter because for the most part they didn't really improve, seeing as for a lot of them this is their only GC title. And not really a "real" one at that.

Season 1 and Season 2 were unreasonably hard to reach a high rank. I think we are quick to forget that they reset everyone closer to the mid-line. I think Season 3 got us close to back to 'normal'. Even though it is marginally easier to reach a high rank.

Dude I was a challenger elite, almost into the star rankings which at the time were the cream of the crop second to the champs. And we still had super champs, remember those?
When the reset hit, I got pushed to bronze 1 div one. FOR WEEKS. The rank reset hit hard dude. It was the worst season ever. I finished it in gold but my god.
And to brag a little, after 3 long years, in season 14 I hit the goal I was aiming for since starting. I hit Grand Champion for the first time ever. I literally screamed my whole neighborhood awake.
I have a love hate relationship with the game due to all the bs I get hit with but there is no getting away from this game. I keep coming back to it. It's a masterpiece no matter how you look at it.
I'm relatively happy with it. I never took the game seriously, even with about an entire year without RL, but at season 9 I began trying to improve as I started playing more and was quite impressed by all these pro players and high ranked players and wanted to learn how to play like them. I was in gold/low plat at season 8, always playing ranked with friends but not caring, then season 9 I hit diamond, changed my bindings and began re-learning with new inputs. Season 10 I hit D3 in all modes, got way more consistent and improved my mechanics insanely fast. Then season 11 came and I hit champ, I even reached Champ 2, and from every season since then I've been champ and got my rewards (except for season 1 f2p, because i lost interest again). I kept improving and improving, but...I would always play ranked with my friend, who now is also improving massively, but he was always a gold/plat player, and I absolutely would not smurf. I dont like smurfs so i wont be one. I was happy playing ranked at champ/diamond level with my friend who at most time, wasnt quite there yet, and even now, I still play ranked with him. But hes now diamond 2 almost diamond 3, which is in part thanks to the MMR changes, but, for me too, it means im not constantly fluctuating because I like to play ranked with my friend who is a much lower rank. We still do it to have fun, and if anything, its helped him improve massively, now hitting things he wouldnt even think hed be able to do, and hopefully this might see me hit GC and my friend hit champ.

When I started on switch, I had to wait a week before I could purchase a Nintendo online account since I didn't have the money at the time. In that week I practiced against bots. After that week when I did finish all 10 ranked games, I got placed in Bronze 1 div 1. Rip. That was over a year ago btw

I was one game away from finally getting diamond 1 last season and when the new season started I was diamond 2. I was so disgusted with the change that I stopped playing for like 2/3 weeks. They robbed me of my achievement!

Season 14 I finally reached Champ 1. Then FTP came along and knocked me back down to Diamond 2 where I was playing against GC titles every match. In my opinion, season 3 has restored the mmr back to what it was before ftp.

I finished last season in D1 almost D2. Now I'm D3 with 1 win away from C1. Now I understand everything, I though I improved at the game... That sucks.
At the beginning of season 3 I got pushed into champ 1 cause of the mmr change, and now in season 4 as I first hit GC then got the rewards it still felt really rewarding, as I still had to grind from c1 to gc. So it did not affect me too much, I just think how much it must suck for the people who grinded and just got placed into GC this season, feels bad man. The grind to champ on the other hand, it felt pointless.

Wayton was bronze 1 at one point? That's actually kinda cool to come so far. Way more respectable than someone who starts in diamond after only a month of picking the game up
That rank reset was the best thing that happened to me in rocket league. I was a gold andy or whatever it was called before that but I got really lucky with my teammates in the new promos and won all 10 games. I instantly got diamond (without ever reaching plat) and I quickly tried to learn how to adapt. That experience made me sooooo much better at the game. just being able to see how better people play and actually playing with them all the time.

Ya, this season's ranks have been a bit weird and a little unrewarding. I played rocket league back in 2016 but never gave it an actual chance, until the summer of 2019. I was in silver 1 during the end of season 14. F2P season 1 I was in plat 2 most of the time. F2P season 2 I was in plat 3 most of the time and barely got into diamond 1 near the end. And now in F2P season 3, I have been in diamond 3 almost the whole time. I have gotten to champ 1 a couple of times. I'm happy about that but not completely.
OG Season 3 I didn't get GC, and now this season I still haven't made GC despite having been C3D4 less than a year ago and that same MMR is now like GC2. RIP me.
So I started playing Rocket League right after new Season 1 hit, played on PC, and the highest I got was Gold 3. I start playing again just this last month on Xbox (which I'm worse at on than PC) with the introduction of Season 5 and immediately shot up to Diamond 1. At first I thought "Oh, sometimes time off helps you not burn out." Now I know mostly why.
ngl i would love a hard rank reset but that's mostly because i think it'd be funny and i feel like it'd make me enjoy rocket league more for a bit

I have played a lot of games competitively. One thing that does bug me about the rank system in RL is that bronze is a wasted rank. No one exists down there. If you look at serious competitive games, diamond is something that people strive for; while in rocket league plat and diamond are the most common ranks. I think they should do a medium reset. I don't think hard resets are ever really useful tbh. But I would like to see bronze actually utilized. I think GC can be just one rank again. Keep SSL for the top 1000 players(or less), like it is now. Allow champ to be a decent rank again. I'd rather be a champ 1 or 2 in the system I just described than be on the cusp of GC in the current system. There are too many ranks that are too similar in skill, that it feels diluted and almost meaningless. You could do this easily, with new rank art (I mean it's been like 4 or 5 years with the same art, with the exception of the new ranks ofc.), a medium rank reset meaning say everyone =< Gold's elo would be put in Bronze, Plat in Silver, Diamond in Gold or low Plat, Champ in high Plat or Low Diamond, GCs in High Diamond or low Champ, and SSL in champ elos. And also allow for community-voted Ranked Rewards. Because honestly, I haven't been hype for Ranked rewards in about 2 years. IDK maybe I'm wrong about it all. But I do think the ranks Bronze thru mid Gold needs a revamp. The skill in those ranks is barely different. If you play at all you're gonna be Gold or Plat. Bc of the 3.5 million ranked players, only 100k are lower than gold1. I see a problem with that.
I hate the new season. I barely managed to get Champion 1 last season and was glad i did when i finally got there.
I am C3 div 3 now basically by going 7 in 10 in placements. granted its 100 MMR higher but still. Its an absolute mess, especially C1 and C2 where you had everything between D2 and GC1 potentially in one lobby it was absolutely aids.

I’m 50/50 on the new season. I mess around around with my friends a lot I’m ranked so I drop a bit so I solo queue. I’m just irritated because you can tell who doesn’t deserve their ranks really easily. I’m high C2 but I gave up trying to cooperate with teammates so I’m switching to 1’s
The thing with new season is that they still moved everyone 100mmr down with ranks so it isn't as much of an issue. It'll change something only at end of a season, but it didn't change almost anything on start of it.
In apex which is my main game they hard reset at the begging of every season. To avoid the chaos I just let the first week and a half pass before even logging on. Kinda annoying but I understand why they do it
in csgo the rank does reset if you're inactive, if youre inactive then you gotta play a game to get youre rank back but it wont be the same, it matters the quality of the game and the score and so on

Im a new player in season 3 and have 48 hours on this game and managed to reach D1, one of the best games I have ever played hope to reach even higher ranks in the future definitely the most competitive game and when you manage to hit an amazing shot it gives such a rush

There are people in Champ 1 that can’t hit a ball in air. 2 years ago being a champ was the f dream for me and now it’s 💩
just hit 100 hours, but because of the changes i’m almost in champ when last season i was plat 1.... yea i improved but still that’s a lot.....
My biggest problem with the way ranking works, is that my friend and I are stuck at two different tiers, because he's played longer than me, and so he ranks slower than I do. So we start a new season, and we play all ten matches together. I rank Diamond, and he ranks platinum. And it's a constant up hill battle to get him into diamond from that point on. Because i'll end up ranking too high, and we wont be able to win anymore, so we rank back down. Except, he'll lose two divisions, and I'll lose one. And so he'll slowly get further and further away from me.
What i'd like, is that if you play all ten matches with one other player, that you have the option to start at the lower rank. OR, put us both at the same rank, somewhere in between.
For us, a hard reset where everything is reset completely, would be far better for us as a team.
I finished c3 div 3 last season went 9 and 1 in placements and got gc1 div 4 this is actually really stupid love the content
I remember the days before epic came around where to be a silver, you had to know how to aerial, and even start air rolling. It’s what made the game competitive. It showed you how hard it was, and I enjoyed it. The past few seasons just threw it out the window.
wait what? Even before Epic, people started to aerial barely in diamond and started using airroll in champ ranks.
In silver, as it always has been, you literally just need to shoot the ball towards the net and rotate back after shooting. You never had to rely on aerials to get out of that rank.
@@granathd then I guess I was in some broken silver lobbies like I’m not even lying silver 1s could start aerialing and I very much remember my gold 1 friend who was air rolling. Sure I guess rotating and shooting could’ve gotten you out of there but no one knew better they just wanted to do all the cool stuff.

I came back after a year and the game was so easy. I barely play and I hit GC without trying. I remember when GC was a dream that I never thought I would achieve and then I suddenly hit it without grinding at all. It’s kinda stupid
I haven’t played in months and came back. I was surprised to see how bad the players were in d3
S14 to s1 I got dropped 700+ mmr when they did the stupid connection of accounts. Without saying they would use the other accounts ranks
i mean until they fix the way they calculate teams... ie, the difference between two differently ranked teammates ie your mmr is based on your rank not the higher of the ranks then a hard reset is the way to go i'm afraid... i play with two different friends...one whom we are evenly matched and one whom is just learning.... now my rank lessens every time i cue up with the friend and the divide between the teammate im evenly matched with.. and we just push him higher and the gap has been there for the last 4 seasons.... and it only really effects us when went between rewards... ie when he was gold 1 and i was silver 3...and then when he was plat 1 and i was gold 3... and then when he was diamond 1 and i was plat 3 .... and now because we get cued up to my rank, my friend whom is just starting is making all those basic mistakes we all did but we spend most of the time losing when we play... but it is needed to know the mistakes and how to correct them... but right now the divide between the one im evenly matched with is he is d2d4 and im p3d1 so i feel like we are going to get him into champ 1... and there is no way of 'catching up to him' and then when there is a 'soft reset' the gap still remains. so either they have to do hard resets... or fix how the mmr works between teammates.
in the end it doesn't really matter because i play RL cause i like to play RL, also great vid as always
