Overland 4XE, my 4th GC and I love this car. Jeep nailed it well with this one. It takes me one way to work + few miles back all electric. The ride is superb, the air ride is better then the older Gen. The comfort, tech is wonderful. I do recommend to upgrade to level 2 charger. 2 hours charge and you are done. Great job, Jeep.
I've driven PHEV and BEV for 10 years now. Honestly PHEV makes a ton more sense if you live where I live. Lots of wind, -40 in winter, not the best DC infrastructure, etc. I'm 100% PHEV fan even though it doesn't get the headlines like BEV vehicles.
Wyoming?
@@CrumResearch I’m north of Montana and North Dakota, in Canada.
@@InternetDude - we live n a similar area. I’m in the foothills. Wind!! Had a Jaguar I-Pace,,, well my wife did, and it was an amazingly good vehicle. At the time, the only EV CUV that was allowed to, even encouraged to go off-road. I tried it a couple of times (my wife was not leased either time) and it was surprising!! Not Touareg surprising, but Bronco Sport Badlands surprising!! I wouldn’t use it for hard off-road use, and the bit I did, was hard on the battery as far as range goes. Range was a huge thing!! You head up Forestry trunk road and you know there’s nothing out there for charging except your home!! Winter would shut it down due to the range at -40. -30 even.
She switched to a Jeep Wrangler 4xe instead. We put Michelin CrossClimate 2s on it and it has performed very well. Even living out in the middle of nowhere we are still a few miles from a smaller town, village actually. She has routinely run on EV only about 70% (69 - 73%) of the time. She has no range anxiety and I use the vehicle as well! She has been dealing with a dealership in Calgary and has a Grand Cherokee 4xe on order. I will keep the Wrangler still. I used to do hardcore off-roading, but my bad back is enough so that I had to quit due to the jarring etc. I will still go fishing into some iffy areas and have the lift kit and 35” BFG KO2s waiting to go on. It will have 18 inch wheels instead of the 20s that are stock. A winch and steel bumpers and I will be done. (Maybe skid plates, especially up front, but that would absolutely be all I would do to it. I do have a F150 Tremor as well, so don’t need the Jeep Wrangler, but the EV side of the vehicle is very interesting though, especially with today’s fuel prices. Keeping it vs selling it, means we would never get ahead $$$ wise, but you still feel better doing your part.
Regardless, I think this can be an ideal vehicle for city dwellers also. With the limited slip rear differential, there’s some serious capabilities for the vast majority of drivers off-road. They can run all electric during the week, use the hybrid mode all weekend doing their thing in the country, and go back to EV in the city the next week and so on. Not a bad set up at all.
@@shitloveaduck right on
@@shitloveaduck I see figuring out Wood Gasification a better sustainability answer than electric batteries that are produced in a country by people under a government that hate Americans. We can cut and grow trees. From what I've read any fuel injection engines can be modified to run on gassified wood.
If they could get the E-range up to about 50 miles I would be interested as I commute about 52 miles a day round trip to work and back. I'd go for the Trial Hawk edition to replace my 4Runner.
yes, battery capacity and energy density increases over time could improve the utility of this 4xe powertrain nicely over time. We just got our Rubicon 4xe yesterday here in Utah and it is awesome -- makes me really happy using and managing electric mode.
I have a wrangler rubicon 4xe and a 60 mile Round trip commute and average 26mpg for my commute. So in other words, the value of the battery isn’t limited to trips of 25 miles or less.
@@davidcarrico3385 great point
Rav 4 prime ftw
Starting next year, all Trailhawks will be 4xe.
I've had a RAV4 Prime for over a year, love the powertrain. Way less compromises than battery EVs. Not as sexy as a Tesla LOL but way better quality and zero range concerns. This Jeep PHEV is great for the market!
I wonder if this jeep will be reliable down there road. I am not in the market for a new car right now, but I’m a couple of years I already know I want an plug in hybrid suv. The rav 4 prime seems to be the best at so much, and because its a Toyota I would expect it to run for years (beside the battery having to be replaced eventually). I just worry about Jeep’s long term reliability with a car like this.
@@justinufheil3524 Personally knowing what I know about the Toyota system and the Jeep system I would say not compared to the Toyota. For one, the Toyota uses an integrated motor in the "transmission" to start the ICE, not an external belt-driven starter. There are zero belts on the RAV4 hybrid engine. The Toyota hybrid systems have been perfected over 20+ years. The Jeep system? Notsomuch.
@@justinufheil3524 plus *any* vehicle with a turbo will 100% be higher maintenance and repair in the long run. That's just physics. RAV4 Prime = no turbo, Jeep = smaller engine with a turbo. It's not that turbos fail every day but they are expensive when they do go out.
I ordered mine a month ago. Getting 2022 prime next month from Japan 😁
... best part over 40miles electric range. My work 17 miles.
Agree that hybrid setups are the way to go until the charging network/infrastructure truly improves. Even here in EV crazy California; too many gaps & inconveniences.
The real question is when are they going to release 4xe/PHEV versions of the Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee L? It's the bigger vehicles that actually need the efficiency boost!
One buy a Wagoneer or L today if could get the hybrid. Milage is power isn't great in those models right now.
They'll electrify the Ram platform first (to compete with CyberTruck, Lightning, Whatever GM calls the Silverado and maybe a tiny bit the Rivian) - then a year after that have an electrified GW option. 2025 at the earliest on dealer lots - it's a hyper low volume vehicle for them (new AND expensive) so no rush for them
I think they just announced the Grand Cherokee.
@@JeepAndThings an L model??
Looking forward to the Gladiator get 4xe option as well should be as the 2024 model year
the open chassis discussion was so refreshing. Thanks!
I really like your reviews Andre. You bring a great sincere perspective to your reviews.
Just wish it was capable of around 50 miles EV range.
7:30 "Clever" is one way to put it.
I don't believe most mechanics would agree though. They might call running a drive shaft through an oil pan a "nightmare". Or "planned obsolescence".
If it worked for the AMC Eagle it’ll work for the JGC! 😝
Interestingly enough, the 00s GMT 365 Trailblazer SUVs had one of the half shafts running through the oil pan too.
It's not exactly new. Lots and lots of vehicles do this.
@@trailrunnah8886 yep, we have a Trailblazer with 288k on it and the shaft through the oil pan has never been an issue. It's gonna die because of underbody rust some day.
Finally a first hands on video. Can't wait to see some driving reviews, maybe even a 0-60 time.
Driving impressions are coming later in April!
@@TFLtruck Looking forward to your review.
Thanks for sharing Andre, great review! $74k, wow! That’s a lot of $$$, it blows my mind how much cars are. Seems the trend is more expensive hi-tech, just makes me wonder where does that leave the average income person. Cheers Kirk
My grandpa ‘sold’ me his 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee WK 5.7L V8 for $1000 and I cannot imagine trying to buy a car in this market. So far I have put over 50k on it and it’s been great, but when things do have issues I will end up repairing/replacing them, even big jobs are now cheaper over buying anything. We need a car company to make a seriously affordable vehicle that can still do 4x4 and tow but not totally kill my wallet for years!
Our inflation rate pales in comparison to the hyperinflation experienced in countries like Zimbabwe in the past; I hope it doesn't get much worse here.
…at the bus stop (unfortunately).
Seems like the $48k Pacifica plug-in Hybrid is a more reasonable alternative, granted, no off roading.
@@CrumResearch GM and Honda are coming together to give you just what you are looking for. Cheaper electric vehicles.
So cool. Jeep is killing it! No Volvo or BMW will even com close competing with this off-road! I love my Sahara Wrangler 4XE so far. 2in Mopar lift, front/rear bumper, CB Bar, Switch-Pro, 35x12.50 tire, and a Eaton Locker coming soon. (a couple videos on my youtube page). So Cool!
That's because they're not trying to compete with it off road lol
love the chassis views. shows how far back current engines are being tucked
And thank you for the in depth review. Really helps me make my decision on placing an order. Been loving my 4xe rubicon so this shouldn’t disappoint
I expect this to be my next vehicle. Just curious to find out when it will actually be available.
If they sell like the Wrangler 4xe you'll definitely need to order one
I always loved the GC. This one looks great and refined but man those prices!
Quite cool to see the chopped up unibody to see all the components underneath.
Yeah axle shafts through the engine oil pan will cause weenchers a whole bunch of pain in 15 years lol... also looks the body needs to come off to service/replace electrical components?
Those are just skidplate. Not to mention it's the uni-frame...that Jeep has used for going on thirty years now. The body doesn't come off. Also, Jeep isn't the first one to do the axle through the oil pan thing either.
i have a 2020 hight altitude that i just paid off a few months ago. Because of gas, i was thinking about going electric but im not sure if something like this is a better option. its good to have the gas as backup but that means you also have to get oil changes and all the other maintenance things of a gas car. nice to get 50+ miles a gallon...or...whatever because im sure the charging cost of EVs are about to get high as well and in a few years it will cost you $80 to charge up your car
Overland is mid-range? I remember when it was the top trim (if my memory serves me correctly).
Overland which is what I have was just below the highest trim Summit. Now they have Summit and Summit Reserve which is pretty luxuriouos
@@ozgunique Yeah, I guess the Summit and Summit Reserve weren’t a thing years ago. Kind of how Ford’s Lariat used to be the top trim and now there are multiple trims above it.
My ‘05 WK is ‘limited’ which was the highest package… how times have changed 😂
@@AgentXRifle agreed, and how prices have changed!
The Limited is the midrange. The Overland is much closer to the Summit than the Limited.
I’m assuming that the 4xE can’t be flat towed like the gas engine models … is that true ?
I absolutely love this vehicle and yes it’s a bit overpriced but after watching you tube videos on all competitors I keep coming back to this ! If I could swing the $ factor I’d definitely go for the summit reserve model which is I think $82,000 ! 😩
I don’t like the regular Grand Cherokee or Grand Cherokee L, due to the cost, feature ratio but I do like this hybrid version. The price makes a lot more sense for the hybrid.
I love the mpge rating on this vehicle, just not sure if the price is justifiable. If it only has a 4cylinder engine I guess that it is more then capable to pull the 6,000 lbs when the battery is completely discharged? Would they be able to just offer a 4 cylinder turbo in this vehicle that gets 30 mpg and costs 20K less? Quite an interesting vehicle that gets me thinking.
The battery is never fully empty. It keep 15% for hybrid function, for when you need a bit of power. It recharges the battery when you operate at partial throttle.
Yeah battery never fully drains. As you are driving you can see on the cluster that electric and gas engine work together. From a dead stop it will take off in full electric and then the engine comes on to assist and recharge. You can feel the instant acceleration and torque not sluggish at all
Also, maybe they can take a page out of the Chevy Volt/ other PHEV book and have a Hold/Mountain mode where the gas engine can charge a reasonable buffer (20-45%) depending on PHEV car and that buffer along with the gas engine will help you haul anything straight up Mount Everest or something similar. Worked great on gen 1 Volts, was almost a necessity on some terrain with its 84 horse gas generator but 150horse/250lb-ft powertrain output
Same reason fancy trunks aren’t focused on functionality.
What happened to your wrangler 4xe off-road review? The one you only got 4 miles of range. I think we would all want an update that.
If Andre is the one doing the review/walk-around on a vehicle, I will watch that video...
57K Starting price is ridiculous. The ones you see at the dealership all optioned out will be 65K+. So just figure 70K+ out the door of a dealership. I really like these, but is it really worth twice as much as a rav4 hybrid?
Good luck trying to find a RAV4 prime...
I'm looking at the 4XE Overland but without all the screens.
Great great review. Thank you. I live in the UK and i am waiting for this car.
Key fobs will be bigger than my iPhone soon.
oh wow if im not mistaken this must be the first time you've ever shown the key.... I didn't expect that from you
Which tow hooks are stronger? Blue or red? I have black.
Another fantastic video from you guys. Amazing work as always.
Prob should have a lil bigger battery, at least 20kw to give it a 30mile plus range. not much room left though. if the gas tank was not shown im wondering what that huge silver part was in the back? maybe it was muffler. no TC/clutch only is a concern esp offroad. kinda jerky. i would prefer an extended range version with no air susp, no passenger screen, no sunroof, no massage. just offer a bigger battery wo the fluff. ditch the piano black high gloss trim too. i dont think wheels even with diff backspace would help you get around that knuckle for bigger tires. i think you could only go about 1 inch bigger wo a lift on the previous gen at 31.5" at regular height w 65s. maybe you needed spacers anyway. stock tires were 30.5. prob same here w 265/60/18s.
I have a 2020 GCH (and had a 2012) with the 6 cyl. Something I always liked was the large 20 gal. gas tank capacity. The fuel tank was removed in the video, but was wondering if you know the capacity. Also, what is the HP in gas only mode. Thanks
I wish they would do something like this with the ram
Wonder what’s the purpose of the “starter” motor that’s belt driving on the front of the engine? Why not just start the engine with the motor in the transmission?
The drive motor I believe is separate from the starter motor.
Awesome video, do you know if the L is getting 4XE soon??
Excellent review! Thank you.
Kinda disappointed you're not getting to drive it. I would especially like to see the Trailhawk.
I believe there is a media embargo on driving reviews for now. You should see some reviews soon.
Quadradrive has always been able to do that...but that vehicle is actually a QuadraTrac II with a rear ELSD. 2010 was the last year for the real Quadradrive II system.
I hope that the electrical components are actually blue in the chassis like that but I doubt it is. Im sure it was specifically for the reviewers to easily identify the motors and such.
My condolences to the mechanics who ever have to work on that transmission - wow. Step 1, put vehicle on lift, step 2 - remove everything in sight, step three - drop the entire powertrain including the front axle, step 4 - now you can check the transmission fluid level.
Nice review Andre!
Wonder what the trunk space looks like? Is there a spare under the floor?
too expensive for its specs. I've noticed no one seems to say what the mpg is during hybrid mode when the full electric range is depleted.
I would imagine it’s basically exactly same as the non PHEV.
@@GHinWI it is effectively ever so slightly worse due to the added electrification weight (battery, motor, etc.). In wrangler 4xe I get about 23.5mpg on the highway going 65mph after the battery is depleted.
What companies have true competition to a Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland. Overland edition has fantastic off road capabilities and very nice inside.
Volvo xc90 did this in 2016. Not exactly the same but worthwhile noting. Battery should be 25 / 30 kwh. Check out the gle 350de.
Jeep needs to extend the electric range! 25 miles isn't enough for the price, should be closer to 40 like the Rav4.
I've had a RAV4 Prime for over a year and I'm spoiled with that much EV range. It's very hard to go buy something else with much less range.
The Rav 4 is a smaller SUV by weight comparison . Plus it’s fwd based so it might have less drivetrain loss
The Rav4 Prime is AWD. Yes its smaller but so is the Wrangler 4xe that gets the same electric range as the Grand Cherokee
@@nunosilva3176 the wrangler is usually on off road tires and is about as aerodynamic as a rectangle lol
My point exactly, no reason why the Grand Cherokee has the same electric range as the wrangler!
I will say, I love my Grand Cherokee 4xe. but the back seat spacing needs some serious improvement. Putting a baby car seat on the passenger side forces them to really scoot up, in order to add access to my baby.
They need a inverter like the F150 hybrid. 7kw and 120/240VAC
This is getting close to Rivian Rs1/RT1 territory! I think for my money, it’s Rivian!
I went to buy one but no luck. Wanted a TrailHawk, still months out. Traded my Ram1500 Laramie for a new Wrangler 4xe High Altitude. We will see how it goes... the new GCs sure are nice inside.
Thanks for all the great reviews!!
Did I see a solar home charger for Jeep on the website?
Surely there is something wrong with the MPG, right? I have a 2017 Summit V6 and it averages about 20 MPG and I get “510 miles” on a full tank. And this is averaging 23 MPG and just barely over 300 MPG (shown on screen) while they say 470 miles combined.
perfect review! thanks for it, love you guys)
Any word on when they plan to release the GC-L 4XE model?
Good camera work
Maybe fix the wrangler 4xe issues first before copy/paste to a different model
Just drove one. They are heavily discounted if you shop around. It's a real swiss army knife of a vehicle, especially if you take advantage of that 25 of electric range often to drive up the effective mileage. And while you might consider Volvo, BMW, Audi, RR or even Benz SUVs for that MSRP, the Jeep looks like it belongs in some dirt. The others won't get near it. Even the RR Velar/Sport are too dear to risk getting a scratch.
Couldn’t remember hearing it in the video but does it sell charge while driving or to the batteries only charge when it’s plugged in
I heard Grand Cherokee 4xe gonna launch this month. When is the L version 4xe gonna launch though if at all?
Um the exhaust is kinda touching or very nearly touching the high voltage wiring conduit… The engineering demo is pretty cool though… Some nifty engineering and very cool to be able to look at it… Not sure about that exhaust though with the high voltage wiring
Good luck finding one, and if you do, good luck paying MSRP.
I dont see Mcintosh or rear seat entertainment option for 4xe in Jeep site. But Mcintosh is there in regular overland GC Cost cutting?
For $70k+ I would look hard at Rivian. Hopefully there are more full EVs focused on off-road soon!
At $70,000, you're getting a nice spec Grand Cherokee. For $72,500, you're getting a base spec R1S with 260 miles of theoretical range. A loaded R1S is over $100,000.
Well done, Andre.
On this episode of cars you can’t afford: Grand Cherokee 4xe
👍🏻😁 … I still like it, but true $$$
$7500 federal tax credit to take into consideration
Isn’t immediate but will benefit when tax season comes around next year
Plus gas savings
The 4xe (the lowest model, not the trailhawk or the overland….) is only $59k
@@MoombaMakai uh, why would I want the cherokee without the trailhawk off road package, oh thats right, no front passenger display, outlander it is, damn that's even more expensive lolol
Andre: that small info screen on the passenger side is right where the pass airbag usually lives. Where did they move that airbag? Thx
Jeep didn’t have to move the airbag in most cars the air bag deploys from the top of the dash. Not the front part of the dash.
very interesting the grand cherokee 4xe and when will we see the jeep wrangler 4xe for my part I prefer the hybrid system than the hybrid plug system
Is there a 7 seat 4xE and does it differ in any space inside compared to the non-electric
That’s going to be a nightmare to work on anything but the front of the engine.
Lowered engine=good for floods?
Where is the spare wheel? It used to be in the boot
We need a phev demon or helcat to get awd traction into the platform.
Some more he gets into the stuff that runs this vehicle with the electrical side of it I see a lot of things that can cause problems in the future SAH with all the systems that convert alternating current to direct current to high voltage to low-voltage all the electric motor twice the gas motor I feel like this would be a nightmare when it’s not working perfectly
Just learned about an Inline 6 Cylinder twin turbo coming to replace the 5.7 litre Hemi.
Evan Williams stated these facts on AutoTrader News:
Stellantis has just launched an all-new inline-six engine that's capable of producing over 500 hp. More important than that power figure these days, the automaker says, is its ability to burn less fuel than the V8s and turbo sixes of the competition.
The 3.0L twin-turbo I6 engine is called Hurricane, and is set to arrive at dealers this year.
An inline layout is an inherently smooth design, thanks to having the cylinders all acting on the same plane. It's why BMW and Mercedes-Benz continue to produce I6 engines, despite it requiring a longer engine bay than a V6 or V8. The engine will also share some key dimensions with the 2.0L four-cylinder the automaker already uses in its PHEV models, hinting strongly that there is a shared architecture to help lower costs.
Stellantis and LG Investing $5B into Battery Plant Coming to Windsor, Ontario, Canada.
The Hurricane will be offered in two main flavours, though each will be slightly tweaked for the vehicles where they're installed. The standard-output Hurricane is aimed at fuel economy. It will make 400 hp and 450 lb-ft and has features like cooled exhaust gas recirculation and the ability to run on 87 octane.
High-output versions of the engine are said to make more than 500 hp and 450 lb-ft with larger turbochargers and stronger pistons.
As both Hurricane engines are set to become the primary power choice in body-on-frame models like the Ram 1500 and Jeep Wagoneer as well as other large Stellantis group vehicles, the automaker emphasizes that the engine should still deliver improved fuel economy when towing. Fuel economy in demanding applications has long been an Achilles heel of small turbo engines in large vehicles.
Stellantis said that vehicles with this engine will be on sale by the end of the year, but did not specify which vehicles would be first. Expect an announcement to come later in the year, closer to the launch of those models
They was taken from the article.
Of note is the battery Factory with LG set to be built in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. $5 BILLION joint venture. Guess they ARE serious about changing the vehicles to keep up with the competition.
This motor should be in this Jeep, not a 4 cylinder....
At 7:20 in the video I see a strut just inches over the drivers side front tire. Is this design safe? I’m wondering if the strut would hit the tire if I was driving and hit something that caused the Jeep to recoil. I imagine the design is the same on both sides of the Jeep.
Fiat is really known for reliable electronics
470 mile range? My Grand Cherokee Hemi gets over 400 miles hwy and has oversized tires 24 gallon tank. If I changed up my driving style I could probably get 470 miles out of a tank. I must be missing something? Doesn't sound very impressive. Does it have like a 10 gallon fuel tank? edmunds says 19 gallons.
Is the 2.0t the same engine in the Alfa Giulia? The Multi-Air? Turbo looks to be in the same place...
They are similar but not the same. The Alpha Romeo has a single overhead cam while the Jeep has Dual overhead cam.
I ordered mine about a month ago. Has anybody heard any word on when they're expecting delivery?
Very informative. Thanks.. Price puts it out of the range of your audience.
Plus. It has many expensive complex systems. Can this vehicle remain reliable enough that the operational costs are reasonable beyond the warranty period?
I really need to see a review that shows how this engine performs in the mountains on a 400 mile camping trip, towing a camper.
This is my use case. It seems PHEVs are best for a bimodal driving cycle. 90% of my driving is a 25 mile commute each way (can charge at home and work) but the rest is road trips to camp in the mountains or desert.
What’s is price difference between regular 4x4 and 4xe? How much we have to pay more?
You can find a regular overland for around the $60k range however the Laredo starts at just above $40k. The 4xe does qualify for the tax credit.
@12:41 would -12 wheel offset clear front control arm if I wanted larger tires on Grand Cherokee?
The much smaller Tesla Y is 70k, so not bad for a vehicle that will take you through the Rubicon. I have the old WK2 Grand Cherokee and the new WL Grand Cherokee as well, and the quality control is up to par with Tesla’s: meaning poor.
😅😅😅😆😆
OMG The blue virtue badges are terrible on that red
Gotta admit I’m blown away. Definitely will be going with a 4xe.. but wish there was an L model. I’m sure they’ll come out for 2023.
I feel like having that whole engine design being so tucked away and lowered by the axle it might appear to be clever engineering but it’s gonna be more of a pain in the ass to work on
68K is a lot for a Cherokee ( sticker price I saw at dealer 12/01/22)
Love this vehicle and think it makes a lot of sense. I might get one
They’ve done a phenomenal job with this redesign but nearly 75k for a Jeep is a HUGE pill to swallow. At that price, I can’t see why you’d choose this over a BMW or other class competitors.
Meanwhile, the Wagoneers *start* there…
BMW is garbage
Because this can tow 6k lbs? Is there a BMW hybrid that can? I’m not sure. Haven’t found it…
@@andylomerson2797 it’s worth 75k simply because it can tow 7500 pounds?

How many miles per gallon?
Spasibo very much indeed
As usual Tfl has limited info! Most important on hybrid is combined mileage which is 30+ mpg!
That transmission nob is soooo huge!!!
Why not a nice gear switch like the 2021!?
I mean, now they are wasting so much space!!!
Let's see how it goes off road and on the drag strip against the competition
Driving reviews are coming in April.
I'd definitely get the extended warranty if I bought this one.
Way less likely to need service. I’ve owned a PHEV Pacifica and a PHEV BMW 530e. Less oil changes, less break pads, les wear on spark plugs. An electric motor is basically copper wires wrapped around magnets and they spin with bal bearings. Not much that can go wrong. That’s why industry uses electric motors in factories an most other applications…they don’t use engines to power much of anything they can get electricity to it. The battery already comes with 100,000 mile warranty (government regulation).

If it's like the wrangler, the hybrid components are warranteed to 8yrs, 100k.
The concept of a PHEV is always tempting, but then I see all of that complexity and think “do I really trust (company name) to make this reliable for 20 years?” And the answer is no. 🥺
