4-7-2024 - My Thoughts on Music Theory
The more I learn about music theory, the less I'm sure it really matters.
When I first started making music, I had a pretty warped view of what theory was. I saw it as a hassle to learn, and something that would force your ideas into a tiny box, governed by sets of rules.
Originally, I hated this. I felt it really constrained creativity, and influenced beginner artists to postpone the cultivation of their own unique style, in substitute for the simple patterns and rules offered by beginner music theory.
To be honest, I still feel this way when it comes to some of the simpler things.
However, since the time I started making music and the moment of progress and knowledge I exist at now, I realize my views were pretty shortsighted in retrospect.
A little while ago, maybe around 4 months in the past by now, I decided I would start trying to learn a lot more theory! Mostly, I focused on aspects of harmony, such as extensions, modal interchange, understanding the circle of fifths, tools for chord writing, and many others.
Even now, I don't fully understand many of these concepts, but through learning them and seeing their effect on the music I compose, my views have really changed.
I believe that music theory in essence, is how we try to logically organize and convey the patterns we see in music. It isn't like what makes music sound good, or what makes music music haha
In the same sense that language is how we try to logically organize and convey the patterns we see in our thoughts.
Its more than possible to have thoughts regardless of being able to put them into words, but it is these words that give us not only a way to communicate our thoughts to others, but the ability to see the world through their lens.
By learning more words, we slowly build a framework to understand the world around us and to even better understand more complex words through them.
I often wonder what my thoughts would be like if I had no language or medium to channel them through. I would still have thoughts, that much is certain. But how complex might they be?
I now understand that music theory is no different.
By understanding concepts in music theory, we slowly build a framework to understand both music and more complex topics in music theory themselves.
Saying the rules of simpler music theory limit creative expression is equal to a child arguing that learning the basic rules of language would limit the vast complexity of their inner thoughts. They're not wrong, however they may not see that learning these rules is just the beginning. What's more important is how these rules affect the way you think, and allow you to organize your thoughts in ways that refine them and make them all the more powerful.
Once this begins to occur, it even starts to shape the way you form thoughts to begin with. Nowadays, there are many choices that come second nature to me in my music, that I would never have thought to make beforehand. Choices like abrupt time signature changes, key changes, and a lot of the time using chords that barely exist in the key I'm playing in.
Its funny to me that these things are kind of a lack of constraints. They are in essence freedom from some rules and patterns in music. Yet, it would have never seemed natural for me to make these choices, unless I began learning theory as I had.
Counterintuitively, it seems the more rules you immerse yourself in, the less you are limited by them.

    thank you so much AZALI for accepting my commission...!! this composition makes me feel like crying every time i listen to it. ;;
to be honest, in the initial commission email when you said how you wanted to make sure that the composition truly aligns w/ the client and is perfectly tailored to them, i thought, how is that possible when you don't even know me. but somehow when i listen to the final product, it sounds like a direct reflection of myself.
listening to "blossom tea" reminds me of my past and how fragile i was and still am. your compositions are so evocative and it keeps me up at night thinking about how your music is able to touch my heart like that. thank you for this composition, i will treasure it for a very long time.

I see music theory as more of a tutorial than a solid block that you have to stay in. It's what introduces us to simple and basic ways to compose, and of course as we learn, we advance and combine all what we learned into something else that music theory didn't exactly show.
    Also, I love the music

Fun fact: A solar eclipse helped end a six-year war in 585 BCE. When the sky suddenly darkened during a battle between the Lydians and the Medes in modern Turkey, soldiers took it as a sign to cease fighting. And if any of you plan on watching the solar eclipse today, remember to wear proper eye protection

100%! I feel like music theory is good at helping you to learn how to achieve the sound that you want and to be able to analyse others' work to decode how they achieved things that you think sound cool, but at the end of the day I just go with what feels/sounds right instead of getting all mathematical about it. All of your compositions are great but whatever music theory you learn really shines through and it's awesome to watch your progress :)

    I feel that so hard.
in my whole life i was immersed on my thoughts and i never cared attention on world around me, so careless about others or about how that affects me. However i was always inside of things i love to work with, feeling lost and going deeper and deeper. Understanding and ascending, it's a weird feeling, but in the same time cozy.
    In fact.

That really resonated with me. I started learning guitar fairly recently and writing music on that instead of piano. The way I mentally group chord shapes on it is totally different than on piano or using a piano roll, so the music I’ve written on it has ended up pretty different.

Honestly, that's the way I just like to perceive things, and that's why I really wanna learn theory. To me theory (and math cause that's my field) was never viewed as "rules", but rather tools and structures. They require you to learn how to use them, but once you do, they can help you organize what you're doing and you can put together complex things in a way that clicks and makes sense in your head.
By the way, I think this one had a lot fewer tense moments. I think this is one of your happiest songs yet :)

That's such a poetic manner to describe music theory, relating it to words and language.
People can convey ideas with body language alone, but without the finesse of words, they come off as simple and rough.
Maybe music theory is the grammar that form the structure of random sounds into pleasant music.

Theory isn't rules. It's a way of describing what's already there. The reason why it can be used to make music sound nice is because we notice the patterns.

You don't have to feel limited in any way by theory. It's there for a reason but It's not so much rules as a way of conceptualizing what we like in music. Experimenting and pushing the boundary of theory is something quite a few artist do, and it's not wrong. There are no rules for creativity since creativity is not objective

This is so beautiful. I've really been struggling to make pieces that I find good as of late, I've been sort of falling into a state where I don't even want to compose anymore, and this really helped me to put things into perspective. Thank you for your wisdom, and keep it up :D

This music reminds me of an idea I had for a little visual novel i want to make one day. As in I have a playlist, some notes, decent art skills and a friend who can code saying she might help me for jokes over summer. It's silly. It's tough to explain. I barely know how to begin or how to commit. I still hope that we can make it.
You're not talking too much btw. Your discussion is wonderful, having found your own meaning and space inside a larger concept.

    after all nothing changed
The apocalypse begins over the horizon
but after all... We still remember what it means to live
    everything after everything, won't change
and we just have to live... and to find... happiness

    You know what? Thank you.
The things you said, really put me in another perspective. I was having a block in what to do, how to progress; I think that writting like you do about what is in your mind is something I want to implement.
Also, your music is too perfect to immerse oneself in thoughts.
You're definitely improving, keep doing good work, i'm here to listen to you. :)

Your experience with learning about music theory after almost just by instinct and taste you already made music... reveals a more vivid vision, instead of the typical theory that seeks to pigeonhole everything, becoming boring and frustrating and that making it limiting as well. ...
You are right to see it as language in general, it is a whole structure that knowing it does not really limit us, knowing it helps us establish and decide at will what we want and not use now with greater security. in your own description you describe everything, always precise and natural, I love that you are always moving forward, making beautiful music and sharing your thoughts.❤️

Heck yeah I loved your so called "yapfest".
I've asked myself the same question a lot: music theory, what should I think about it.
And I really really wanted a simple answer to make me stop thinking about it so much. And I think... I think I found it!
It's a way to find new ideas, and a different way to enjoy music, or rather be surprised by it!

I also feel like this when it comes to learning music theory. I actually studied traditionally only for one and a half year, and that was amazing, but ever since I learn it by myself on my own pace. And it is sooo true that the learning and practicing of it even start to shape the way we form our thoughts... It is so soothing to immerse ourselves in the process of making music and realizing it is even more and more a part of what we are and how we see the world. Music is language after all
    best regards from brazil!
