  • April 4, 2009: A ferocious battle between a Kestrel and a Jackdaw! The Jackdaws previously destroyed the Stock Dove nest in the nest box. But claiming this space won't be so easy. The Kestrels, who have previously nested here, want to return to their home.

The fighting is truly vicious, and yet neither seems to be able to claim a vidtory. But I have the feeling it's NOT over yet. The Kestrels want that nest...
Fascinating the way they went in talons first...

Kind of interesting. The Kestrel is probably one of the smallest raptors-- we have almost the identical bird here in N. America -- they are tiny falcons and much of their prey is large insects and mice. I have put up some Kestrel nest boxes on my property and I seen them successfully drive European Starlings out of nest boxes from time to time. I don't know much about the Jackdraw we don't have them here but they remind me of the Jays (also corvids) -- they are impressively aggressive!! Is that the Western Jackdaw (Corvus monedula)? I'm surprised that it was able to put up such a strong fight against the Kestrel.

    • @Mandolin1944
      @Mandolin1944 10 лет назад

However, I can't imagine where an interaction between American kestrels (Falco sparverius) and Common mynah (Acridotheres tristis) would ever happen? Common mynah are birds of southern Asia and not currently a problem in North America because they are not breeding in the wild here. Hopefully there is no one stupid enough to release any Common mynah to the wild in North America. They are a major avian problem now in Australia because some complete fools must have released them there. They would be a disaster to N. American native cavity nesting species --even worse then European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris). These birds never should have been brought to this continent. Likewise House sparrows.

There arch rivals, and have always been that way, but Jackdaw's are quite tough. Where they lack talons, they make up for in sheer beak power alone, as was visible a few times, during this video footage. This is not to say, if the Kestrel had wanted to, it couldn't have killed the Jackdaw, as it was more than capable of doing so.

Amazing that it was actually the jackdaw gripping onto the kestrels feet. I'd have expected it to be the other way around, and no doubt the kestrel has much stronger legs and feet but the jackdaw always managed to grip it in the perfect spot, above the claws and just on the "ankle". There was nothing the Kestrel, with its stronger feet, could do about it. It's like a martial arts special hold, haha.
EDIT once in the hold the Jackdaw also pecked and pecked the kestrels controlled foot and leg. This is a bird of prey's most valuable asset, he knew where to hurt it

The problem isn't that I need meds, but rather that sooner or later, I'm going to get into a condition where I *will* need meds, should I have to read more of such incomplete, ambiguous and completely unclear sentences.
Here it's still rather easy to understand what actually was meant, but people who are so awfully lazy with formulating their sentences tend to be even more lazy when it comes to explaining really complicated processes or circumstances. Then it becomes a real pain to try to read and understand, so it bugs me off, when I come across too much of that kind of stuff on a single day.

If you look carefully near the beginning, unless I'm seeing things, the Jackdaw actually severs one of the Kestrels toe's.I cannot believe the Kestrel,(a female,)came back after that, and more than once. The mistake the Jackdaw make's is leaving the box shortly afterwards,l wonder who actually claimed the box for their own thereafter.

Yes. from what I've read... Crows/jackdaws/ravens are intelligent birds and quite honestly... pound for pound... awesome fighters. This Jackdaw took on a bird which is equipped to kill. Amazing. Yes, these birds are misunderstood especially since Hollywood connected them "so well" with death.
Think about it.. These birds can Talk, Learn, Fight, and use and "make" tools.

At one point in the battle when the Kestrel was on top of the Jackdaw I could tell by his screams that the Kestrels claws dug home and deep into the Jackdaws body. Kestrels have a very strong grip in their feet. So it wasn't all Jackdaw winning. If the Kestrels mate had joined her together they could have prevailed. It looked like he just wanted to mate with her when he flew in briefly.
Making a couple of more bird boxes would provide extra homes for all the birds that want to use them. Make the diameter of the entrance hole no more than 3" across then larger birds such as the barn owl will not be able to enter.
I have made several bird boxes for Kestrels and they seemed to love the homes I provided, using them year after year.

@nickys34 They make nests inside the box. And, it's an instnict that parents have. They won't lose that.
The nest box is to help protect from predators and it's a nice way to see more of your native birds.

They are about the same size, the Jackdaw is made for defense and tearing, the Kestrel for catching, tearing and eating: no Jackdaw will ever kill a Kestrel, unless the Kestrel injures itself during the commotion, but Kestrels Do in fact kill and eat Jackdaws, though not easily.

I have studied Jackdaws just from my garden as there are lots of them. They are without doubt the most intelligent of all birds.I have seen them fight off Sparrow Hawks who don`t give in easily but are outwitted by the Jackdaws. They form a posse when they are threatened and hit the skies like Spitfires to ward off intruders. They nest in my chimney every year and are more than welcome. When the young finally pop out of the chimney they are almost fully grown. When I put food out the gulls swarm around fighting with each other while the Jackdaws just pick up three or more pieces and float off and leave the Gulls to it.Jim.
