I have a Murphy bed in our flex room and love it! Our guests generally only stay for a weekend, so it makes the most use of the space during the week and doesn’t feel too cramped - we also have my craft desk and my husband’s work desk in there - and it’s a pretty small room.
I love Murphy beds for their ability to give a room Swiss army knife flexibility. It can be a home office/guest/crafting/exercise room with the right kind of storage and Murphy bed.
I don't know how you did it, but you have basically now hit every topic I needed regarding the house I bought in January. The guest room flex space is the last one and here you are delivery this great content as well.
Have a great sized loft space that can be seen from downstairs when you look up, it needs to be my guest, craft, exercise and meditation space! I’m constantly rearranging and just can’t find the right vibe! I will definitely try.. your video’s are inspiring thank you!!
Lol, I’ve given up on finding the right permanent vibe, and since I like to decorate, I’ve had to come to terms that my spaces will change seasonally, sometimes roughly monthly.
Try to plan the space so that looking up- you see the “pretty” bits. That might mean using the back of a sofa to help demarcate space and hide the clutter Wen! I would relegate the craft area/storage to the furthest corner, unseen from the ground level if you can 👍🏻
@@JulieKhuu I LOVE YOU!!! Thank you! Will totally move the couch to this area. I used book shelves to block the view but it also blocks the light… no windows in the condos loft! You are FABULOUS JULIE!!!
I have a small spare room that I am setting up as a guest room/lounge room/ file & office supply room. I am retired and don’t need a desk. There will be only occasional guests. It gets nice morning light and a view, so it is a room I can use for morning coffee and reading. I purchased an apartment sized sofa with a chaise section. It converts into a queen sleeper with storage for the linens in the detached section under the foot of the chaise cushion. I will put a short file cabinet in the closet and end tables on each side of the sofa. I got a slim console to hold office supplies, doubling as a surface for guests things. Pretty pleased that I got the scale right and now have a triple duty room.
This is the video I needed, thank you so much, I never knew of daybeds, they look so great! Now I have so much new inspiration for that extra room I have!
Thanks for this video!! You have opened my mind to thinking outside the box and using my spare bedroom in a creative way. Can't wait to start this project!!
I like it. even though I think we're still missing some variations of third room, like guests room - gym, guest room - yoga, GR- indoor/outdoor dining. I would love to see one of these combinations on the next episode.
I am buying my first house and I have a guest bedroom + one extra small room (too small for a bedroom) and I am definitely considering making in a work / crafting room. It's a square room and idk how to work the position of the desk how you suggest. But it's definitely something I think about. If I have to choose I'll definitely make it a creativity room instead of a work area (although I do like the idea of having all of my work-related stuff in one designated place) - for music and crafting !
Hi Julie, Mary Anna here! Always enjoy your videos. I doubt if I will actually use much of this, but I always feel like I can glean something from your videos that I may use later. I also love daybeds- they are perfect for a visiting grandchild!
Julie to the rescue. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 LOVE the ideas. And it’s like you are a mind reader cause I have a bedroom I was thinking on how to turn into a bedroom/office 🥰
I love a Murphy bed. My husband needs a home office and we also need a guest room about once a month for a couple days for grandparents and other family.
My guest bedroom has a queen size bed centered - a small antique desk with one drawer for desk essentials sits next to the bed with a reading lamp and is used as my desk. crafts and sewing are all organized in a 4 door cabinet armoire. This room is used utilized more often than not.
i'm so spoiled as my three children grew up and moved away. I have a massive craft room and two other spare rooms. I am renovating so good ideas coming along to update. i just started working back at my office after 14 months but I think i will need a home office space going forward.
The whole desk in the middle of the room or not against a wall thing is cute but not always practical. For example, if you have a multiscreen and equipment setup as I do in my home office space.
Sure, do what works for you Daffodil. Some people only work with laptops. Some need a wall to anchor the short side of their desk so they can run cables alongside 👍🏻☺️
Very true! For me, I sacrificed my double-wide widescreen and now use a simple screen and my laptop. That way I can close the laptop at the end of the day, and the other screen isn’t too overwhelming. I’d rather have more restful space than the screens subtly telling me I have work to do.
Check out the video before this one for studios. Also check out my Dream Space series- the episode on scale and proportion will help you plan and layout your space with the right sized furniture 👍🏻☺️
Both good design and too much trouble. I had a built in one when I had a studio apartment in college. It depends on your needs. I’d say for this purpose it’s a great idea. Especially if you have a smaller space.
Idea for a guest room and you don't ever want anyone staying over - turn it into a banquet room with a solid banquet size table so big the wall has to be removed to get it in but replace the wall so the table can't be removed. Then it can still be used for crafts etc., - and banquets.
I think murphy beds are probably ideal for kids play rooms that double as a guest bedroom. you have a lot more free space for the kids to play while at the same time the ability to turn it into a guest room when necessary
@Julie Khuu I'm currently redecorating a small guest bedroom and was considering twins beds versus one queen bed to accommodate more than one guest who typically would not sleep in the same bed together. What would you advise?
My two cents - Who is going to visit? In some close families, if you’re comfortable enough sharing a room, you’re usually going to be ok with sharing a queen. But that’s not the case for everyone. For me, I value space during the non-visit time, so I would do the twin beds. It also makes it easier to move them around if you get bored of the layout. Another thing you can try is a twin bed, and a child’s bed, or day bed, if children are part of that visitor group. It saves even more space.
Love this idea for that very reason Rochelle. If the guests need privacy, then the twin beds in one guest room will allow that. You can also add a sofa bed in a loft/ family room for more sleeping space 👍🏻
I’ve seen versions of all 3 in one room Tracey! Of course it depends on the size of your exercise equipment. If you have a closet, remove the doors and put the desk/ daybed in there to free up floor space for workouts.
I didn't see room for a bed in most of those craft rooms that were shown. I am planning to have a dedicated guest room in my next house, and a Murphy bed in the craft room for when we are hosting multiple family members
Thanks for this Julie. i do daily online yoga classes in my loungeroom because that's where the big TV is, so I've had to assign a fair bit of empty floor space there (as I dont want to be moving furniture back and forth each time.) My adult son, who lives elsewhere, has done the same with his living room, moving the coffee table back against the wall permanently (only, he does Nintendo Switch dance exercises to the TV). My other adult son does his stretches in his bedroom, because the living room has a wooden floor which has no rug, owing to the aforesaid dance exercises - so he has also had to create a large open space, in his bedroom. I wonder what is the best approach to incorporating an adult "play area" into a space, when you don't have a separate gym/exercise room?
Side tables would be your best friend in this case. Remove the coffee table and opt for something slim so it can work for the perimeter, as well as pulled back into the living area when you host guests 👍🏻
Thanks for your Tips Julie. Could you also make video about photo wallpapers. They somehow look a bit awkward especially if it has a beach design and it is just plainly pasted on the whole wall. It looks like something is wrong or something is not in symmetry. I cannot find a video about this. I hope you can make one.
I feel like any one of the craft images can be dissected and copied Maria. I love the use of vertical storage from floor to ceiling. Elfa system at the Container Store has great, functional and modular solutions 👍🏻

I have a daybed and a cabinet for my large format printer and a roll top desk. What is your opinion on roll top desks? I’m finding that it’s not working for me anymore, what would you recommend?
