  • Gates Wildlife responded to a call from a concerned customer regarding a raccoon in a window well near the gate to their backyard. They were concerned about their families safety as they frequently used this gate to enter the backyard. They also did not want any harm to come to the raccoons but simply could not allow them to live in their window well. They hired us because of our humane philosophy and because we could ensure that the family unit will stay together.
    Enjoy!

I lived in the GTA for 10 years, and I can say that Toronto has a problem with 'urban' Raccoons. They're cute to look at from a distance but they become wily, bold pests when they move into your house or yard. The raccoons in my area had a 'buffet' circuit that they routinely followed every night when they'd come out to feed. They are highly social and smart! - sharing information on the best garbage bins in the neighborhood. And don't cross or harass them; or you'll find that they'll bring their entire family to shit all over your front porch. Heaven help you, if your young kids or pets get bitten in your own yard.
As far as I can tell, these 'wildlife control' are professionals, who not only know what they're doing but conduct their 'relocations' in the most humane way. Instead of poisoning or killing them, they find solutions that cause the least amount of trauma for the animals (and their clients).

@DrFlippin You must understand that she was no trouble at all.. BUT regardless if you cross them or not.. they can get aggressive.. and if you have kids then the animals safety is out of the question if they start shitting on your property and are a threat to your kids ..

Nice business lol. You get called, you come out and shoo the mother away who simply relocates to another yard. Tomorrow another call, repeat. I would insist they get transported several miles away and released in the woods. Otherwise they're always going to be someone's problem but I'm sure that's part of the plan. ;)

@@NorthStar420 Uh, if I'm paying for a service I expect the problem to be solved and done right from the start. I'm pretty sure this guy isn't a volunteer. It's like that shady mechanic who replaces your brakes with the cheapest parts that he KNOWS will fail prematurely thus providing him with more future work. Dentists do the same thing as doctors today. They could resolve your issues in one or two visits but instead spread the work out across many to maximize their charges. That's why they frown on implants because it's a one and done and it hurts their bottom line. Primary care physicians today just give you the once over and refer you to a specialist, who needs to perform many expensive tests and may refer you to another. The cycle repeats until there's been $30,000 in insurance charges when all you came in for was migraines, and you still have the migraines! And are YOU comfortable with physically removing wild raccoons who have nested on your property? Most aren't so guys like these are called in. Heck we live in a world today where people pay others to assemble bikes and quiet a squeaky screen door. If Siri can't fix it, someone else HAS to.

You are right. I am pretty sure in fact that this is a raccoon family they previously relocated from a house nearby, I can tell because the raccoon in that video attempted to settle near a window that looked just the same, so I don't think it's a coincidence.

While I totally understand not wanting wild animals in your attic or cellar or whatever, was this raccoon really hurting anyone or doing any damage to the property, I mean she was outside and unless the homeowners sleep in the basement surely the noise is not that annoying? Couldn't they have just waited until the babies were mobile and she moved out and then put a mesh screen over there to stop her (or anyone else) reusing it as a nest site next baby season?

@@Annileeze Indeed, I suspect I would have been leaving scraps out for mum (possibly even pet food ;) but that is me, to be honest I do that for the birds and stuff anyway so I suspect mum would already be helping herself ;)
I do sympathise with people not wanting wild animals inside their houses, especially animals which have interior _latrines_ I'm glad there are humane pest controllers around who can remove the animal(s) with as little disruption as possible but in my book outside is fine as long as they aren't doing any damage to the property, it's a tough world and we have to share it with other species, we already make it hard enough for them without making it worse, she and her babies will be moving out of their own accord soon enough just wait and remove the temptation if it bothers you that much, I suspect I would have a little hut in a corner of the garden for her to use going forward but again that is just me and I realise not everyone is like minded (although these homeowners clearly cared enough to use a humane firm which relocates the animal rather than killing it so presumably they care a bit ;)
In fairness I live in the UK so we don't get raccoons here (yet... I hear they are in Western Europe so who knows ;) we do get foxes, badgers, weasels, stoats and hedgehogs but they don't tend to move into your house (hedgehogs do wonder in sometimes presumably looking for pet food to pilfer) mostly the unwanted -guests- _pests_ that move in are rodents and insects and then there are birds and bats which will move into attics if they can find a way in, although birds mostly do this when they are nesting not all year round and because bats are endangered you have to be very careful if they move in, there are rules about how you can remove and relocate them. Most of the wild animals I've had in the house were dragged in by the cat, I discovered I am very good at catching rodents, bats and reptiles (from what I can tell... better than the damn cat, presumably he does okay when he wants to though since he managed to catch it and bring it indoors, perhaps he is entertained by watching me hunt ;).

Miss Chief LOL You sound an awful lot like me! I have multiple bird feeders, baths, houses and nesting platforms around my property. I even had a squirrel house in a tree for them in the winter. I’d love it if a mama had her babies in there. I go bananas when I see a mama bird has built a nest in the nesting box. It’s so exciting to see wildlife bringing new life into the world!
And like you, I would definitely have fed mama raccoon too. I would have been checking on them daily making sure the babies were thriving. It looked like mama was doing a fantastic job of caring for them. They were so young, though. It made me sad to see them disrupted. At least, she relocated them and hopefully to an equally safe or even safer spot.
I suppose to each their own, but I’d be delighted if a mama raccoon or squirrel had her babies somewhere in my backyard. It’s their home as much as it is mine! ❤️

Raccoons defenseless? They're like wild fierce tiny cat-bears. I get it, they look so cute and harmless but these are wild animals and they can seriously injure you. I've seen raccoons kill dogs 3x their size. People get injured because they think these animals are so cute. I know someone that tried to help a raccoon out of a situation and lost half her hand. Plus, they can carry a type of rabies without getting sick from it like a bat. They are awesome creatures but they are wild animals and NOT defenseless.
