Thanks for the tips! What impressed me the most was this video was put up 6 years ago, and he still comes to comment section to answer questions to this day. That is something you never see, props to you Shannon your a good guy!
Hopefully some faux contractor hacks will be watching. I lived in a house for 20 years that was re-sided and guttered. When I ended up with bacterial growth on the attic rafters because faux soffit was installed over plywood....with NO OPENINGS in the plywood for ventilation! The roof exhaust vents were adequate, but NO INTAKE! I found all kinds of crap that I had to correct by myself before I could sell. And you know, not every home inspector knows his stuff....2 different inspectors, 2 potential buyers, and NOT ONE noticed the flaw! 🙄 I fixed everything myself after researching everything. I don't let any so-called contractors touch anything of mine....even asphalt contractors are shady!
Great video as always. Quick question... If I am using Vinyl soffit, can I still bend it 90 degrees as you did with the aluminium? I want to achieve the same look as you did where the two sides meet.
+Jason Richards No it will not. where I made the bend you will need to install piece of 2x6 cut to fill in the end and then install the soffit only on the bottom of the soffit and then cover the 2x6 with fascia .
Thanks Jason looking forward to seeing your video.....oh ya, you don't have one thats why you are watching mine. Everyone does things slightly different, this is how I was shown as an apprentice and thats how I do it.

Dont like that corner. The rainwater is going to travel down that gable facia and go behind the gutter facia aluminum wrap water behind there cant lead to anything good
@@soulmist2163 Perhaps do the outer (lower) one first, and then the one that goes up the roof... that way the lower one folds under the one that comes down from the roof, so rainwater can't flow inside anything. Probably will be fine for a long time either way though.
Hey Shannon, great videos man! Helped me get through my garage build! thanks for the helpful tips, because sometimes the hardest part of a project is getting started and your videos are a great push in the right direction!
Thank you for the tip on screwing the J channel in from the bottom. I was going to cut 200ft of wood strips to nail them to. I didn't want to buy F channel since I already have hundreds of J channel pieces I got for free. you can tell that you really do this for a living, and are not just a company rep making a product video.

I've viewed many of your videos for guidance and always feel confident I do things and do them well after I watch them. Keep up the great work and again, thank you very much.
Before installing security camera, I want to know the structure of the under-roof and exterior wall to run the cables. This video gives me very good answer. Thank you Shannon.
I wish I had hidden my cameras under my soffit. Since they are 4K cameras and standard size, people think my house is a security compound. But at least they are easy to access if I need to and I can also redirect them. I don't think I could get any with optical zoom, or with much maneuverability, that are in a dome or smaller format.
If you do measure ahead and find one length will work, stack a few sheets of soffit together, clamp the edges with vice grips so they stay lined up, and cut through them all at once with a thin cutoff wheel on your grinder. Saves oodles of time on a big job. The Skill saw with blade backwards trick works too but it sends metal shards everywhere and will often bend corners as Shannon mentioned. AWESOME video as always!
Awesome video! I've done a lot of renos but have yet to do soffit. Went from being very unsure to very confident in 15 mins. Thanks for the detailed vids!
Thanks Mr. Shannon, your awesome videos helped so much and saved me piles of cash and time. Checking the fascia for square is a HUGELY important tip, otherwise it'll get crooked and then you've got problems. I love how you do the corners too! A tip on house wrap I didn't realize until after - line up the marks on it with studs! It will make siding installation much easier. Also in my experience, get help installing the fascia - it flexes vertically incredibly easily and the upper edge can get caught on anything sticking out on your fascia board. Then if you don't see it and put screws in, it bends and looks crummy.
Ok so lets get this straight... People who are giving negative feedback and saying this isnt good, WHY ARE YOU WATCHING THIS IF YOU ALREDY KNOW HOW TO DO THIS SHIT
you are a true Profesional not only the ways to accomplish the task at hand but also verbally explaining how to. i appreciate the straight forward information .thank you

Thank you so much for the great videos. What type of screw and size do you use for screwing the soffit to the wood beam? You mentioned #6 x 5/8 and is that for the channel? Thank you.
I use the same screws for the soffit panels where its hidden under the fascia edge and then I use painted matching screws for the bottom edge of the fascia. #8 or #6 is fine at about 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" long.
Shannon, Thank you so much for this! Love your show! Never did a repair in my life until I started watching your videos. It's saving us a ton of money on our old, new home.
Thanks for coming back to the video to ask your question. When you ask here instead of on the channel more people can be helped as well. the drill is a Milwaukee and the screws where a #6 x 5/8 flat head screws.
By flat head, I assume you mean slotted, correct - as in, you could use a flat-head screwdriver to drive in the screw? Or do you mean that the head is actually flat rather than pan head or round? I assume you wouldn't use a flat head screw because those are usually used with wood because they taper to the shank of the screw which would dimple the surface of aluminum - please correct me if I am wrong. Also, what material of screw do you recommend? It seemed that yours were painted.
The gable box is used around here by some people as well, but it is big and bulky in my opinion , so and others do it as I have shown here. I have never seen anyone however, apply screws to the face solely . I would think that would make the aluminum "oil can " even worse in the sun ? You must be installing them on the face near the bottom of the fascia, other wise the fascia would rattle in the wind? Interesting idea though, thanks.
@@HouseImprovements - Hey Shannon, can one put the J-channel onto the 2" rigid foam exterior XPS, by using longer screws? I want to extend the foam all the way up to insulate to the roofline.

Ok on this video the siding corner does need too be cut as you described. As you can see in this one I use the soffit to box in the end of the soffit. In the other video I'm showing you how to use the siding to box the end of the soffit. In that other case you would cut a piece of 2x8 or whatever you need to give some backing behind the siding to attach J..
I recently became a secretary for a construction company mainly dealing with roofing and gutters so I've been looking for videos that would help me better understand exactly the difference between soffit, fascia, leaders etc. being that I had no prior construction experience. Just wanted to say thank you for this video, you are a great teacher and extremely easy to understand, I really enjoy your tutorials. Almost make it look as though even I could do it ;) Thanks again!
Thanks for the excellent video, Shannon. I didn't look through all the comments so I apologize if this question was already asked, but what type of screws need (or do you suggest) to be used? I see a lot of people using nails or staples but I would rather use screws like you show and I haven't found a good answer online. Thank you!
Shannon, great job! but it would have been nice to have seen the J-Channel being installed. I don't mean to offend you, but sometimes you take for granted the audience is more experienced than some of us are. Keep up the good work. We appreciate you! Thanks.
Fantastic video! I've been watching your videos from your first one chronologically. Thank you for taking the time to explain what you are doing and why. Awesome 👍
By putting the horizontal piece of aluminum on second , wouldn't that allow rain to flow into to go into the piece?...you did say caulk could help but if its gonna be covered I would do it first.
Doing lotsa home improvements during covid and now I’m a subscriber. Shannon, Is there a way to run the siding into the same J channel for the soffit? Or do I need two J channels. First timer. Thanks!
Love your videos! You've helped me hang a door, put up siding, and pull up the laminent in my dining room! Just curious if this same process will work with vinyl soffits and fascia as well. Thanks!
In this video you will have the gable end soffit J going right out to the fascia . The outside siding corner will be cut to fit right under the soffit panels and the siding J will butt into the corner.
Good video. Couple of things I did different was install the drip edge first so I could make nice bends on my drip edge instead of piecing it. Secondly, why did you not make a conventional "bird's house" on you gable end corners.
Hi Shannon. I'm building my own carpentry shop/garage and your videos have been very helpful. Thank you. Two quick questions, if you have a moment: 1. Going up the gable side with the soffit... at the peak I presume you just bend the soffit material to fit the J channel and just continue with the down slope. Is that correct? If not what happens at the peak where the two meet? 2. Presuming that I'm correct in my first question (just continue through the peak and down the other side) is there a strategy if, at the other end of the gable, the soffit does not end with a seam? If I don't make sense, let me know and I'll try to clarify. Thanks again for these videos.
You are correct. You can also place two J back to back at the peak if you like, but I just bend and keep going. At the end on other side just cut to fit.
Thanks. As a subcontractor i use tips and tricks from everyone. I damaged some soffit the other day installing aome seamless gutter. This video helped me do a perfecr repair. I might get into thw soffit business now too!
Wow...are you ever good at what you do...you hand coordination is fantastic...and the info was really extensive...you're a real asset to the buildind trade...
In my experience, aluminum cuts just fine in a sliding miter saw with a carbide blade. No need to reverse the blade as you would do with vinyl. Set up a stop and you can cut soffit very quickly.
Interesting I have never tried it with my sliding mitre saws. I now have a jig that I use with my circular saws.ruclips.net/video/D2eGRY0x-8Q/видео.html
Where online can I buy the type of fascia siding used in this video? It's exactly what I'm looking for except I need 4", 6", and 8" high on different parts of my house. Thanks!
The most common brands I know are Gentek and Kaycan. Check your local lumber stores. These fascias come in all of those sizes. or you can buy one size and cut them down to fit.
The only thing that I question is shouldn't the end piece wrap around the outer layer of fascia? That's the only thing I would take into consideration aside from that, this way saves on material. Usually my company using 1x2's till its as even as possible. Would it look more professional if it dipped // into the house or was just even throughout the entire layout of the house?
I'm glad you are thinking about how the water runs. Basically my thinking is that the metal I rolled around the corner and then nail with the hidden nail looks better because it hold things tight without face nailing and the metal wrapped around protects the wood. Water running down is minimal and by the time it gets to the end it is pretty much all down to the point already because of the slope so it drips off. Thanks though for the comment
I like this, thanks for the video. I think I will do my soffit corners on my cabin like this, instead of building a bird box or whatever it's called, this way will look cleaner. Thanks.
Hey Shannon, I have a few questions for you and I would really appreciate if you took the time to answer them. I'm about to replace some fascia that was blown off in the winter. 1) What adjustment would you make when installing fascia where there's no drip edge? 2) Our builder put screws on the face of the fascia, not underneath like you did in the video. Structurally, is there a disadvantage to doing that? 3) What screws would you recommend using? 4) The fascia was blown off during the winter and the wood was exposed to the elements for a couple months. Does the wood have to be replaced? I love your videos and your teaching style, keep up the good work, Thanks, Gabe

EXACTLY WHAT I NEEDED! MY FASCIA ITS ALL OPEN AND I WAS WONDERING HOW TO DYI IT! THANKS!
Hi Shannon. I'm building my own carpentry shop/garage and your videos have been very helpful. Thank you.
Two quick questions, if you have a moment:
Yes it butts to the J. Watch my vinyl siding video to see.
Thanks. As of yet we have no gutter video, sorry
Please see my wall framing video. I frame a outside corner in that video.
@@HouseImprovements You're awesome, thank ya sir!
Man thanks so much I'm new to sub contracting and this video really helped. ..Be Blessed
This video is 10 years old and I've referred back to it a few times. Thanks for the sharing.
You forget to show us how to get up their to do the job and walk side by side like you :))
If you are high up you might not want to use a ladder. Best you borrow or rent a scaffolding
Have never worked with aluminum or vinyl covering materials before but your video explained things so well I will give it a try thanks.
Ok fine, what ever buddy
In my area any lumber supplier or building centre.
I like this, thanks for the video. I think I will do my soffit corners on my cabin like this, instead of building a bird box or whatever it's called, this way will look cleaner. Thanks.
I agree.
I love your videos and your teaching style,
keep up the good work,
Thanks,
Gabe
Please go to my forum on the website and re-ask your questions there and then I will answer them. thank you
It all works the same, they will go either way.
You're the best, whenever I start a project or am stumped I look for your videos first. Thank you
Glad you like them!
Thank You so much for taking the time to make this video!....I have had a problem with contractors starting a job and then wanting more money than what they; quoted me to finish the job.....We will have to finish the job ourselves, it seems....You make it look so easy.....I just wish I could have hired you to do the job to begin with.....I appreciate this......
u will need to know how to build a soffit box===i have requested it already
Ronda Baggett n
Fantastic, thank you. That trick with bending the soffit up at the corner is a great tip, I'll definitely be doing that on our project as well.
Truly excellent. Every little detail was covered including how to make the fascia cover almost magically hold itself up until nailing it. I may be putting up new soffits for spring Break now!
