  • Bob Hoffman opens a fascinating debate on the failed predictions of advertising experts over the past decade, with particular focus on the social media marketing of brands. What are your thoughts on this? More on adcontrarian.bl... and / tweetsonbrands

For years I have been searching for just ONE individual to say these things clearly. I cannot thank you enough. I'm a FAN.

He's totally right. I work in advertising as a creative and a lot of that time was in the digital departments of agencies. The bullshit buzzword of the day from planners telling us what the future of advertising is going to be has changed about every two years, from it's about 'conversation' to 'storytelling', then 'Utility' then 'Entertainment'. It's now 'Content'. Exhausting. Yet clients still tell us their TV ads work.

He sums it up at the end of the Q&A. A good product is a good product and you can advertise it through any channel period

Wonderful to hear someone else trying to shake the ad industry out of its complacency around marketing to the ageing consumer. See from 27.50. I wrote the book.

This talk is great - I am an IT developer and need clarity and straightforwardness in order to do my job and I love my job.
However there are plenty of upper level managers and others who use buzzwords such as 'content' or 'best practise' which quite simply mean fuck all!
These make my work hell as I cannot ever get a straight answer out of them.

I work as a designer and man oh man, these people started to creep their way into my profession and apply that stuff to design which creates a mega clusterfuck since it is based on correct semantics and other factors as well. I learned a lot from my IT co-workers (Applying PRD's to design for example) and it helped a great deal to keep these lunatics inside the asylum.

The background makes me feel like I'm being talked to by a tiny man who might get run over at any moment. It's hard to concentrate with that much fear for someone's life.

Mr. Hoffman's language may be too raw for some, but his candor is refreshing and his credentials are impeccable. Well done! (Watch for a reprise at the 2014 NAB/RAB Radio Show, where he will be keynoting in September.)

This is an interesting idea: the web replacing the yellow pages fulfilling demand & not creating demand in the way that advertising does in radio, tv, and newspapers.
"Why wasn't there advertising on the analog telephone?" Great question.

You should be kidding. This is 10% fact, 90% bluster. In practice, there are successful ways of advertising that fly directly in the face of the compelling but false narrative weaved by Bob.

He's very funny, and sassy, and blah-blah-blah, but despite his decrying the lack of scientific method at the outset, he not only fails to reproduce his assertions or cite reproducible results, but fails to actually cite the sources while he confidently throws out his lopsided numbers.
The skepticism he advised at the beginning would be well-applied to his own arguments. The many Kool-Aid drinkers here in the comments would be well-advised to review the beginning of the talk where he discussed the lack of scientific approach that he discovered when he first got into advertising.
Take that skepticism and apply it to what the very mouthpiece of skepticism is saying. I think you will find yourself in a very Escherian argument that has no end and no beginning.

Well, this aged like Milk. I'm not sure TV is doing as well today as it was doing in 2014, when this was recorded. TV ratings are down and internet and on demand watching is high. I think the reality is a generational thing. The writing is on the wall and while this didn't happen as fast, it will eventually happen. TV is dead, long live RUclips! lol!

I kinda agree that the web is really like a library...full of great people and full of allot of knowledgeable stuff. Who buys encyclopedia's...these days...maybe only smart people.
go to your local pub and watch who is watching tv...?

Bob is dead-on. Businesses, like the rest of us, get what they pay for. "Digital" or social is quick, easy, and frequently free. But it doesn't produce, it just pads the bottom line for the 1% of earners in the corner offices, and allows the irrelevant without an original idea to say they're "doing something."
