  • The Buck 119 is a very capable knife. I was unsure how it would handle this task, it performed very well. Perhaps on a slow day in the Deer Stand I'll do this again. After hours of carving the S35VN blade is still hair shaving sharp. The Buck 119 Special Pro is an Amazingly Good Knife.

    👍 Another carving work of art. I was truly amazed you accomplished this with a Buck 119 - not your typical carving knife. Proves once again that it is the artist, not the tool.

      Thank you. Curiosity and a notion that it might be amusing to try with a 119 is what got me started. It went better than expected.

      Thanks. I'm not sure I could compete with the local firewood sellers. They get $5 a bundle here at the state park. At my rate of production it'll be months before I get my first bundle made. 😉

      😁 The absurdity is what inspired this project. Now your guess/suggestion to use a sharpfinger will have me looking for a suitable branch to give it a go with. I bet it does even better.

    I keep a 119 in my bugout bag. I like it. Bought mine from an old gent at a yard sale. $25. I also carry another full tang fixed blade on my belt. Redundacy. It never hurts. Your carving is amazing. Ive wondered what a man thats good with a larger knife can do.

    • @kirbycreekmo

      Good choice, for its size the 119 is pretty light and would make a great backup in a BOB. I was pleased with how well it worked on that exercise. Good all-arounder.

    The Buck 119 Pro carries a lot of sticker shock......$200 dollars is a damn expensive knife. But, you are getting a Custom Shop quality knife with the Micarta grip and a much harder S35VN steel blade that holds the sharp edge a lot longer than the standard 119 Special with the 420HC blade. There is a night and day difference with the S35VN blade, as this video clearly shows.

    Very cool! It was very calming to watch you work set to that music. Impressive carving skills, especially with that knife. Have you ever used carving knives? I've been whittling since I was a kid with folders and fixed blades, last year I got a beginners flexcut palm and knife set and it blew my mind.

    • @ZachariahJB
      @ZachariahJB Год назад

      @TheKirbyCreekOutfit the brand is called Flexcut, I got the beginners set, it comes with a U chisel V chisel both with palm grip, and two blades with large "carving" style handles.

    Do you think the 420hc steel would keep an edge shaving sharp like the s35vn?

    • @kirbycreekmo
      @kirbycreekmo  8 месяцев назад

      I like Buck's 420HC. It will take a shaving sharp edge. The difference is that the S35VN will hold the edge longer. The 420HC is very easy to sharpen with every sharpening system I've tried. S35VN (and S30V, MagnaCut etc) sharpen easiest on "diamond" stones. I've also found that compound is needed for stropping the upgraded steels.
      I would not shy away from 420, it has some advantages - price, will handle abuse better and is very easy to sharpen. It will handle real world knife tasks and while you are using it the only way to tell the difference while using a 420 or the same blade in an upgraded steel is to stop and look at the blade stamp.
      I like and have both. They are both up to whatever I job I put them too. Hope that helps.

      Keep at it. It was almost a year ago I carved my first wood spirit. I was pretty proud of it then, now it makes me wince. This carving too may be the subject of an update video. There are lessons in every carving. It's an enjoyable endeavor that I've found to be relaxing and meditative. My weekends are a bit less productive though.
