Many in my family are perfect examples of this fear, and not wanting to know what’s going on, and not capable of talking about it. It is so crazy making to me. On some level we are at least dimly aware that the US has done evil everywhere since the beginning, and we know the chickens are coming home to roost.

Learning the history of Central America, of coups, death squads and invasions, when I was connected with 1980s antiwar movements sealed the deal. Our hypocrisy is all pervasive. When I hear Israelis justifying killing children because they will turn into terrorists, I recalled what U.S. Army John Chivington said ordering the massacre of a native camp at Sand Hill, Colorado in 1864. When some of his soldiers protested the order to massacre women and children, Chivington replied: “Damn any man who sympathizes with Indians!...Kill and scalp all, big and little; nits make lice.” We dress it up more prettily nowadays with the “rules-based order,” but it’s pretty much the same racist colonialism, as you said.
Russia and China actually do say they are the best and they do have a history of imperialism and destruction and genocides.
