Love your videos! Especially when you get a ride of a surfer in the mix. Our 'longline tuna' boats in Hawaii are about the same size, but our channels are deep, so they do not face the challenge these 'skippers' face coming home. But, our outside waters, like between all the Hawaiian islands, can be very rough.

Thanks, It’d be awesome to see a fishing boat catching some waves in Hawaii. Now that would make a good video, especially if we got a tube.

this was filmed at the Greymouth (NZ) river bar..... so you have an fast river flow going out, and relatively shallow entrance. Timing and tides are very significant.....

My Dad was a stoker on the USS Company vessel, Kaponga, which ran aground on the Grey bar many years ago. The crew were all winched ashore by breeches buoy. The ship was lost. Dad was from Rununga originally. We were all raised at our home North Beach Westport, 7 kids. I'm in my 80s now, could be wrong about the name of the ship? Records will confirm. Bob Lower Hutt.

Thanks for sharing that incredible story, Bob! I’ll do some digging to find more about the Kaponga and its history. If I can track down photos or records, I’ll make a short video and upload it. I believe I’ve seen some old photos in a library book-stay tuned!

Here's the big question, is it the throttle or the accelerator?

Are they sponsons on the sides of the boat to stop it slipping sideways

I'm not a fisherman, but from what I understand, boats can be fitted with hydraulic or manual stabilizers-thin fins attached to the hull. These help reduce rolling and improve handling, especially in rough weather.

Big waves can sink your boat

"A few of the smaller boats have gone down on this bar. They can get caught out quite easily, but the bigger boats can handle a bit of a beating."
